Laurence Fishburne leaving CSI

I was reading an article about Laurence Fishburne leaving CSI... apparently his character, Dr. Raymond Langston, has just not resonated with viewers the way Grissom did. Did you like Ray as a character in the series? Do you think he fit in with the rest of the team? Since Ray will be gone and Catherine's role is being cut back, who would you like to see on CSI next? Some of the names I've seen tossed around for a new lead are people like Michael Chiklis (from The Shield), Jesse L. Martin (from the original Law & Order and the musical "Rent"), even Jennifer Beals (since her show, The Chicago Code, has been cancelled). Can you think of someone that would be a better "fit"?

I miss Grissom! lol! I don't know but I think Laurence Fishburne don't really fit with the CSI. Even if he plays his role well, I don't know but just different from Grissom. Hopefully they could find more fit actor to play such soon.

I miss Grissom too :) I loved his character. I always enjoyed how he was so much in his "own little world" even though he was leading a team. His mind never stopped working and he'd say the most random things. I also adored his relationship with Lady Heather... fascinating :))

The only reason I like Fishburne on CSI was the story with Nate Haskell, and that's over so it's okay that he leaves, it would be cool to see Grissom come back. Also I really like The Chicago Code, and have been a big Jason Clarke fan ever since Brotherhood, I'd like to see him, but I don't picture him as a CSI so I don't know... only time will tell if whoever they choose will fit or not.

Apparently they chose Laurence Fishburne in the first place because they felt he had the credentials to take a lead role... being a noted film actor and such. I guess he just didn't translate to series television the way they expected. I would love to see Grissom come back too.

I'll be sorry to see Ray go. But I understand why, his character started out great but suffer over the long run, I don't know if it was a change in writers or Ray himself that lost that first edge. I'll wait to see who takes over, I'd hate to lose the show, it's an old friend of mine.

I like Ray too... I found him to be a calm, thoughtful influence on the character mix. Grissom was such a huge personality though and Ray just didn't seem to fill his shoes. I won't stop watching either... I love the show. I watch the other incarnations of CSI but, like you, I have a soft spot for the original :)

Hmm. I did not know this. I think his character is good. No one will reach the audience the way Grissom did. I think Jesse L. Martin would be a good replacement. I am not a big Michael Chiklis fan myself and I am unsure about Jennifer Beals.. I really think they need a male instead of a female character to work beside of Catherine's role.

I love Jesse L. Martin... I wonder if there would be any kind of relationship "tension" between him and Catherine, if he were to get a role? I find him rather attractive and he has a gorgeous smile... easy on the eyes LOL I loved him in Rent... he is just a huge personality with great on-screen presence and I think he'd bring much more to the show than the Langston role did.

I don't think I'll miss him really, I don't miss Grissom either but I'd like to see more of Catherine instead of Dr. Langston. Or the geeky lab persons, not out in the field, but in the lab :-) I always wished they had replaced Horatio Caine instead, I like both Grissom and Mac Taylor but Caine and his sunglasses aren't as good as the other two in my opinion.

I like Catherine's character too... I wish she wasn't scaling back her appearances :( I think there is a lot about Catherine that they could explore and expand on and it would add to her appeal. I watch CSI: Miami too and Horatio drives me nuts... I hate his long "thoughtful" looks into the distance and those glasses... ugh. The more I watch the episodes the more I'm tolerating him but I just don't enjoy his character.

LOL it's funny that you say that Torunn! I've always thought of CSI Miami as "shiny" I think you and I mean the same thing but I couldn't think of a better word to describe it

And the way he always takes a pause in the sentence in the wrong place, not to mention how wonderful he's supposed to be with children. I'd be scared of him if I was a child. I think CSI Miami has a higher babe and botox-factor than the other two shows. Sure, all of them are a bit too pretty to be realistic, but CSI Miami is prettier then the rest.

Guess Grissom was really irreparable on that lab. I think that Fishburne's character was good but underdeveloped. I like his character but I don't blame Grissom fans (myself included) to somewhat resent Ray Langston when he first stepped into the scene. Though I have accepted him in some way, there was a big, gaping void that Grissom left that neither Ctaherine nor Langston filled. I guess that's the reason why some fans were ecstatic or reminiscing good old Grissom days in Two Mrs. Grissoms. I cannot recommend an actor since I am familiar with those 'heir apparents'. However, it is alarming that many good characters are leaving the show. I hope a good and steady character will help save this show.

I was soooo disappointed too when Grissom left. He was probably my favorite character in the show. I was watching it again yesterday and I still feel that Langston lacks personality. I don't know if they were going for "intense" by having him be so quiet and unemotional... but it just comes across as "blah," if you know what I mean

I know that the writers are trying to talk Marg Helenberger into doing more episodes as Catherine. Of the remaining characters, I like her the best. I actually quit watching CSI when Warrick was killed off. If they wanting to get another big name actor to come on the show to replace Langston, I'd suggest Benjamin Bratt, of Law and Order fame of course. I think he would have great chemistry with the cast.

I wish Marg was adding episodes and not cutting back. I like the Catherine character and it's nice to see a strong female lead in a show like CSI where she can still be attractive and feminine, at times, without compromising her authority. Warrick was awesome. I found I was more and more into his character as the show went on. Benjamin Bratt is a cool suggestion. I really enjoyed his time on Law and Order. I also liked Jesse L. Martin's role. Neither one of them is hard on the eyes either!! Just sayin'

I am sorry to see Laurence Fishburne leave as I really love his work but I wondered if they gave that little scene in The Two Mrs. Grissoms to see if Grissom still had appeal. It would have been interesting to have both Grissom and Ray maybe have one take over the day shift the other the swing shift and with Catherine on the night shift it would allow the actors to be part of the show and at the same time cut the amount of episodes they appear. It would be interesting if they were to bring a woman in, hopefully cause some tension with Nick, Greg and even David as they all find her attractive and if she were there boss it would be interesting too. Someone like Tricia Helfer, Gina Torres or even Gillian Anderson have all played strong female roles able to stand their own and they have charm. As a male presence goes someone like Edward James Olmos, Richard Schiff, Bradley Whitford or Michael Wright who has the combination of fun and danger would make great characters.

I enjoy Laurence Fishburne's work too. I don't dislike Langston - I just find his character a little bit TOO mellow. I would have liked them to explore many more aspects of his personality. I love Catherine's "take no garbage" attitude, combined with underlying sensuality, and really wish she would maintain a larger role... but I agree with you that a strong female lead with the younger guys could be a great dynamic. Edward James Olmos ~ what a cool suggestion ~ haven't seen him in ages!

Nooooooooooooooo not Jennifer Beals!!!!! The Chicago Code fans (of which I am one) are not ready to let that die! I have not been particularly fond of Dr. Langston. They have not written him in a way that we can get to know him. He has been too guarded, too private. Which some could say that Grissom was the same way but Ray does it in a way that makes him seem like he's something other than what he says he is. Which they kind of addressed with his medical condition (the one he shared with Nate Haskell) but I still felt like we were never able to really know anything about him. I think the writers/producers/creative team behind CSI have been very skilled at selecting actors to join the team so I think anyone they choose will be a good addition to the show.

I didn't find his character to be very interesting and I didn't really watch the show after Grissom left, but that finale was a doozy.
