Inception is an anime rip-off

I was browsing a list of the most popular animes yesterday when I stumbled upon a movie title called, "Paprika". Has anybody heard of this? I searched for reviews and many dubbed it as the 'best' movie of 2007. Because of that, I watched the movie. The movie hasn't even reached halfway yet when the terms, the context, and some of the characters in this movie strongly reminded me of Inception. And after watching the WHOLE movie, you'll definitely conclude that Inception is only an epic RIP-OFF of Paprika. It's not impossible that Christopher Nolan (or the movie's writer, I suppose) has seen the movie due to the fact that it has stirred quire a lot of buzz. It was sold out both to the anime fanatics and to the japanese movie industry. It's possible that they got the idea from this anime and put it into film for the larger market.

Christopher Nolan is a well-known writer so it might have been a coincidence, even though it really seems like he took the idea. Come to think of it, I think I've seen a similar version of Solomon Kane in anime as well as Faster (starring The Rock). Or, as you've said, he might have seen the anime, liked the idea, and produced something very similar on mainstream, it can happen. If this is the case, I'm sure he's fully aware that anime fans will find out about this because I believe Inception was shown all over the world, let alone there are thousands of anime fans in the U.S. He could have realized that from the beginning, therefore, he might have thought about his reputation as a writer, if he really thinks about it. If it's the other reason, then maybe Christopher Nolan is really just a money-making leech of a writer.

Nah, I don't think it's just another coincidence. I've seen way too many Hollywood films that "coincidentally" has the same storyline and plot in any Anime or usually, in ANY Asian dramas. The only difference between Paprika and Inception is that in Paprika, the dreams are used as a CURE to treat psychiatric patients while in Inception, it's not. It's more of like, the other way around. And in Paprika, there's no totem to determine the reality from dreams, there's only D.C Mini used to enter people's dreams. Christopher Nolan could've at least given the credits to the writer of Paprika. But what am I talking about? If he had done that, the people would just watch Paprika instead of Inception.

I don't think people would let Inception pass even though Nolan gives credit to Paprika, though. Anime is way too different from a movie flick. They might watch the movie first and gain knowledge of the anime series instead.

I haven't watched Paprika as the poster somehow didn't appeal to me. However, after reading your comments, I'll definitely watch it! I personally enjoyed Inception and thought that the whole idea behind the story was pretty ingenious. Let's see if that opinion still stand after I watch Paprika. One thing I have to say is that the Japanese are real genius when it comes to story ideas. One can see that in their manga and anime.

Tell us what you think after watching Paprika. And yes, I agree with you regarding the poster. It's nothing out of the ordinary. From what i've heard, Paprika was such a hit. That's why I was surprised that no one remembered Paprika after Inception came out last year. There were some minor differences between the two movies though..but there are just too many similarities for you to call it as a mere coincidence. This doesn't mean I hated Inception after knowing it's only a ripoff (to be honest, I was addicted to Inception after quite some time), but I do feel bad for Satoshi Kon who really should have the credit for thinking of the idea first.

Interesting... I may go and watch this now... But if that's is, then Japanese film maker must have spoken for their right...

This is very interesting. I have nothing but high respect for Christopher Nolan because of this film. I read or watched an interview saying that Nolan was working on Inception for years before it was made so I am quite surprised with this information. I will watch "Paprika" and see for myself if Inception is indeed a rip off.
