This is the first I have heard of this, but it seems the Gay Girl in Damascus blog has been a very popular blog recently...garnering a decent following on Facebook & Twitter. Gay Girl's real name was revealed as Amina Abdallah Aral al Omari. A woman in Canada has been carrying on an online affair with Amina & thought they were becoming close & actually developing a relationship. Recently Amina's cousin reported on the blog that Amina had been kidnapped which stirred up many people on the internet. Now it has been revealed that Amina is actually a 40-year old heterosexual married male Edinburgh University student pretending to be a lesbian in Syria. Whether you got caught up in this scam or not, what are your thoughts???

Writing as someone who many think is a fish and has been thought of as female many times; perhaps I ought not to comment. I don't see much harm save to the poor woman that thought that her GF was a woman. We all like some anonymity online - even here we use pdeudonyms.

You mean you aren't a female fish???
I feel extremely sorry for the lady who thought she had met her perfect mate!!!
He claims to be a Middle East activist. I feel he could have used the power of the internet to do MORE positive things!!! Instead, he's done more harm than good!!!

Jerk!
I don't bother with blogs... they're mostly fiction, anyway.

We don't really know our own circle of real-life friends, let alone the people we see online in blogs and the various social networking sites. I think everyone would be wise to limit the amount of private information they share via the web. It is too easy to track anyone anymore and you never know just who may be just down the street in your neighborhood waiting for you to post your vacatiion plans or your itinerary. Let the poster beware.

I don't think ANY of us can be reminded too often to BEWARE!!! In this case, this guy claims he wasn't trying to harm anybody. He's a Middle East activist who believed his lies were helping the people in the Middle East. My heart truly goes out to the woman who was caught up in his lie!!! He couldn't tell her the truth or his cover would have been blown. He became so caught up in his make-believe world that he didn't have enough sense to stop. Fortuntely, the only true victim here is the woman with the broken heart. Maybe this will be a wake up call to remind her to be MORE careful!!! I have met numerous phoneys here on myLot. I know I can be fooled, but I do try to watch & listen closely in order to see the discrepancies!!! I feel sure if she went back & reread what he had said to her, she could pick up on the clues that all was not right in his world!!! Then again, hindsight is 20/20!!!!
