Would you spend that much for a TV?

My group of friends at work had a nice chat about TV. A sister of my co-worker who was coming home from overseas work bought a 42" LCD TV. This is on top of the 4 television sets they have at home. They say they each have TVs on their 2 rooms, on their dining room and on their living room. Another co-worker spent about $2,300 for a TV. Wow! That is way too much for a TV. I on the other hand wants to get rid of our TV, not because it's old but I think TV is taking most of our quality time to bond with each other. If you have money, would you want to upgrade your TV or buy another one on top of what you have or do you want to get rid of it too?

hello sweet, I did upgrade our TV,but i gave away the old one. My kids are not fond of watching TV they spend more time in computer or sometimes PS3. Our bonding time is when they start holding their musical instruments,we all love music a lot-that's our bonding moments. have a good day always

Hi Jaiho! I haven't upgraded our TV yet. We have moving for the past 2 years. We are about to settle in our new house, but the furnishings will take a back seat for awhile. Although, I too would want a sleek TV in the future. It is not a priority right now. Wow what musical instruments do your kids play and what age did they start? Did you had them tutored or you personally taught them? I see my son have music inclinations, but I don't know what instrument would be best for a 5 year old kid. Sometimes he pretends to play the drums, the guitar and the violin. He likes to sing too. I want to expose him to sports and music.

what you have written is almost just like talking about one of my brothers. they bought one last year for roughly $2500, on top of the 3 they already have at home. the 2 in the bedrooms were slightly smaller and had cost slightly lower too. and they have the old tv in the kitchen/dining area. although in our own home we have 5 tv (one for each bedroom/family room), only one is relatively new and sizable and had cost a little over half of what my brother had spent in theirs. it came with the remodeling of the new bedroom. anything smaller just didn't look good. the other 4 units, we had them for years. and it's convenient to have a few because when my siblings' families come over, they have different interests already and different age groups spend time watching shows together. as for myself, i'd think twice of buying very expensive tv when i know there are other priorities at home. i'm for spending quality time too but often, without the families of my siblings, there's only my parents and i at home and we are not so fond of the television when we are all busy with other stuff. my father watches cartoons, my mother watches tele-novelas, and i watch movies and foreign shows. unless any one of us 3 is interested in what the other is watching, it's pretty much his own tv. we don't have to watch the same thing because there are other tv available.

Good thing with a lot of TVs is that each can watch their own preferences. When I was a little girl, I have to compete with the elders to watch cartoons. Now I have a toddler, I have to compete with him again. At least, he knows how to compromise.

when we were kids, we didn't have tv. we watched from the neighbors' house. so of course we don't have a say on what we want to watch. we were just glad we could watch something. lol but rural kids have to be back home before 6pm or else elders will get mad. by the time we had our tv, there were no cables yet so we make do with 3 or 4 local channels depending on which channel had the best signal on screen. that seemed so long ago. we're just glad now that we could afford more comforts in life. it's quite relaxing to enjoy a show or a movie in cable to relieve the day's stress. it's fun to watch with the kids at times. my nephews and nieces' laughters really have a ring to it. it's even more fun to watch them enjoying the shows. have a great time with your kid!

Hi Myles! I think you are making up for the times you didn't have TV. We tend to buy things that we didn't have before, now that we can afford them. When I was young, I remember we have a huge black and white TV as big as a console table and you have to turn it like a clock to change the channel numbers. Back then it was really a fad, now it is really eccentric. I love to hear and watch how children laugh when they watch TV. They really are music to the ears. I remember my son watched a cartoon and there was a part that made him laugh so hard that he let me rewind it over and over again. I don't mind doing so, I like to hear him laugh so hard. It is heart-warming to see him so happy.

Hi sweet pea I actually paid $3500 for the one here at home, at the time I purchased it I could afford it and paid cash for it at the store. We have a big front room and it is a really nice TV. When I bought it I was earning six in a half figure yearly income and was able to do so. I currently am not working and if I had to buy it again now I would not be able to, but if I thought I wanted it, I would aside from my obligations save up for it. Since I first bought it I was a huge TV fanatic but then the kids were home too. Currently not so big on TV so don't think I would really care so much if I wanted one in the near future. lol

Yeah then I know someone who loves to compete with the Jones' and are knew deep in debt because they have to get everything everyone else has and then can't afford their monthly bills. Yikes. Now that is insane. lol

A jealous neighbor we have here. It happens in my country too. Some people like to compete with their neighbors even if they can't afford it so they ended up in debt and in the end they also lose their possessions. They can't accept that fact that some people are more financially able than they are. Really crazy people.

hi sweetpea, We have two television one for living room and one at mom's room I don't spend much money on appliance mom is planning to buy a home theater soon but I told her that maybe she can but not now since she just bought a new refrigerator and washing machine . I am trying to discourage her because soon those TV will be depreciated and she can get it for a low cost By the way I still remember our meet up happy mylotting

What pretty little picture you got there bhaby! Yeah I'm not forgetting the meet-up, unfortunately Glorya's been busy juggling 2 jobs. She's trying to kill herself. Wow your mom is not wasting her time upgrading your appliances. But you have a point, new models have very high introductory price, just wait for a couple of months and the price would be considerably lower. Unfortunately, by that time comes another new model would come and the cycle just go on and on.

Honestly, I wouldn't want to spend that much on a tv set. I know for a fact that it would be a waste of my earnings and savings just to buy a tv that expensive. But if I have enough, I would really want to buy a new tv set that's of good quality, but not too expensive, in order to replace the tv we have right now. It's pretty old now. ii think we have had our tv for 10 years now. I would really be ecstatic if I get to replace it soon. But the need to replace it with something so expensive as $2,300 worth of appliance, I don't think so.

Wow! You do know how to take care of your appliances for them to last 10 years. Well most of us have a better use for that $2,300 than to purchase a new TV. But to those who can afford to buy one, lucky them!
• Philippines
23 Jun 11
Yeah. I guess so. Our tv is pretty old and the remote control is pretty busted. Anyway, it still works but definitely, if I could afford to buy a new one, I wouldn't hesitate to purchase. But $2,300 is still too much for a tv. I can definitely buy something else or use it to travel or something. Besides, i don't watch tv that much like I used to.

We have the same perspective about TV. I'm a person contented of what I have. But there are some exception for this kind of situation like having a gaming console connected to your TV. Usually it's not fun when you have small TV. But I'll say it is still in that person. If he is fond of having TVs then so be it.

Hi Namoka! Welcome to Mylot Kabayan! Actually another co-worker bought an LCD TV so he can attach his gaming console to it. I think there will always be little children in us. Some buy them because they haven't experienced having them as a child. So they try to make up for it now that they can afford them.

I am not very keen on TV today. Since I don't have much time to watch it. If I have to upgrade my TV at home, perhaps I will buy a HD LED TV. As right now our TV is the old one and therefore we can't see the details when we play the Xbox games. So I need the HD TV. But our current TV set still works well and it's 38". I don't want to waste it, this is why I don't have a plan to buy a new TV yet. I love China

Hi Youless! True. The LED TV is the "in" thing these days. However, they are currently developing a 3D TV. They always come up with something new even before you get to enjoy what is the current fad.

I really wouldn't spend that much on a television. That's really way too much to spend on a TV, in my opinion. For the time being, my husband and I are happy with the television we have. We don't really need anything else. At some point, we might consider getting another television, but it's going to be a while before we actually do. And when we do, we're going to try and get something at a reasonable price. We're definitely not going to pay over 2000 dollars for a TV.

I think buying that TV would depend on the person's preference, priorities and capacity to pay. I am a frugal person and I know I can use that amount for more fruitful things. I don't want to spend that much for something that depreciates in value.

$2300 would be way too much for me to spend on a TV. If I wanted a TV, I would wait until it went on sale or got one a little more within my budget. I actually saved some money back for a while to get a new one and still waited until I got a special online offer from Sears. I am a bit frugal. I do know what you mean about TV cutting in to family time. I think it does have the possibility to do so. I like my TV and I don't want to get rid of it..but if it was cutting into other stuff, I would reconsider.

I am a frugal person too. I also want to upgrade our TV in the future but it will have to take a back seat for now. The money I use to buy such luxury can be spent to more fruitful causes. Besides, our tv is currently functioning. If ever I'll buy, like you, I'll wait until it's on sale.

Sure, I would certainly buy a huge 2342" TV set, if I had all the money in the world, AND if I didn't HATE tv so much. I hate tv. 10 years ago I cancelled my Cable. I haven't missed it. 6 years ago I unplugged my TV set, and left it in a corner. I haven't missed it. Last year, I sold every TV in the house. No way I'll spend 10ยข for another one. You'd have to give it to me, and then I'd likely sell it. Ironically both of the TVs I sold, people had given to me. If I ever have a family, and wanted to watch movies with my family, I could in theory, be convinced to buy a TV, and a big one. However, I certainly will never watch cable. It is simply not worth the money, and broadcast is horrible. It's amazing how many things I didn't realize I "needed" to be happy in life, once I stopped watching TV.

I haven't got rid of our TV yet, but I got rid of our cable provider. With the wide array of programs available with having cables, I don't think we would have time for what is essential in life which is having quality time with our family. When one is so engrossed with TV viewing, you don't have time for real conversation. It limits your activity with your family. Instead of playing with your kid, or teaching him new things you get stuck on your couch. Watching TV sometimes gets in the way of spending quality time with our family.

I think I spent around $800 on my TV which I bought almost two years ago(I think I am still paying for it). Back then, I thought it was way too much for a TV, but at that time, our small TV conked out, and I am a big fan of watching it, so I grudgingly shelled out the money. But $2300?! I think you could almost buy a good pre-used car for that kind of money!

Really! You can buy a car with that amount? In my country, you need to double or triple that amount for you to get a pre-used car. Yeah, I know the feeling when you terribly want to watch something but you can't because the tv or the dvd conked out. I bought a new dvd player just to watch the last season of CSI Miami.

Hi sweet pea: I would only do this if I can affor to buy it. In fact I think I won't buy the best tv. Of course I want a good device with perfect quality and special features but I won't necessary the most expensive one from the store. I use my computer more often than my tv so I prefer to buy the best computer rather than the best tv because I won't spend so much time using my tv. ALVARO

It pays to be frugal these days. All prices are all soaring high. There is really not much left on our paycheck. As long as the TV served its purpose, it's fine with me. I don't care about the features. They still show the same programs.

Well, I spent a little more on a LED TV last year... so... yes, I would!!! XD But it all depends on what do you want it for. I'm a movies lover and when I bought my TV, I wanted the best TV I could afford. But if you only like to watch TV shows, then you've probably no need of such a TV.

True Ynahh. As long as they can fulfill their function that is okay with me too. Like cellphones, I don't go for the "in" thing. I don't mind the model that I use as long as I can text and call. Other people would tend to upgrade their cellphones whenever a new one comes in the market. Oh well, to each his own.

Hmm... to me, that is just too much. =P I think one tv is enough. Two at the most in case different people want to watch two different programs at the same time. But we don't even have cable at the moment so that happens very rarely, if at all. Also, for me it is not necessary to have a tv in practically every room in the house. =P And I don't really need the very fancy ones either.

I guess your friend has got one of the latest LED tv's and thats why it has cost him that much amount of money. surely $2300 is a big amount but it also depends from person to person. myself too am planning to invest in a flat screen tv in a couple of months from now along with a play station 3. havent really thought of the cost but after having participated in your discussion i will surely have to get down to some calculation and decide whats best for me.

True Keenan. It is not bad to spend as long as you can afford it and not get you into deep debt. Acquiring things should be planned and should not be done because of a spur of the moment thing. It's really easy getting them with the use of your credit card, but it is not easy paying for them if you haven't planned how will you pay it. Don't buy new models at introductory prices. Wait for a few months and you'll notice that their prices will soon go down considerably lower. Unfortunately, a new one will come that may just be too tempting for you to resist buying.

Best advice I can give is don't spend too much. With technology these days you'll find that even the most expensive TV's drop drastically after 8 months. Don't buy yesterday's technology, don't buy tomorrow's technology. But buy TODAY's technology. I always avoid reccomending 3D Tv's to friends and families simply for 2 reasons. 1) the technology is in it's first stage and still not yet perfected. 2) TV Manufacturers are already working on a 3D TV that doesn't need glasses! Now why would they want you to purchase the one that DOES need glasses? Simple, the manufacturers rely on the "pioneers" or early adopters of the technology to show them the demand and also help fund further research to improve the technology. Best advice would be to purchase something within your means, and don't worry too much about all the fancy features. At the end of the day it still shows you the same TV shows and Movies as any other TV.

Hi Amardeep! Welcome to Mylot! Wow you have good points there. Like cellphones, tv models usually change every now and then and they always come up with new features. Usually these features come with a very high price but at the end of the day, features or not, they still show the same shows we watch. So true!

I will say oviously no. Because TV is not good in my opinion. You can watch tv in a small television the same thing and in bigger one same thing so whats the difference you are watching the same channel. No need to wasting money just because of some pleassure we can use that money for good works.

Hi Simpleplan! There are many reasons why people opt to buy them. It's not that bad as long as they can afford them and not go into debt. People have unique preferences and priorities. But like you, upgrading our TV is the least of my priorities now. There are more important things I can use that money for than buying TV.
