Making Hard Decisions now...

I grew up a pack rat. Long story there, but I went through this at least 3 times in my life. Once when I was still with my ex-boyfriend, I gave away a lot of stuff, then around five years ago (I was married to my husband by then, and had 2 small kids) - the middle of our living room floor was full of stuff to be given away, then last year I gave away about 2 pickup trucks full of stuff. This year I'm at it again. I really and truly want to live as much of a minimalistic lifestyle as I possibly can, and so there's more stuff to rid ourselves of. Hmmphf. Here's the hard part. Letting go. And I thought last year was hard. *sigh* Not looking forward to it, but seriously, though, do I absolutely NEED all that I have? Our flat is so freaking dusty it's not funny, so I still got stuff collecting dust, big time. I want to at least be able to stuff our van full of stuff to cart off to the sally ann. At least this time around it won't be that big of a project as it was last year, though.

Well, it's easier to manage stuff without the bulk. I also have a lot of stuff here I don't use, some I don't even know exists til I found them last week. You could have held a garage sale so you would have earned something from your stuff. Although that's unselfish that you just gave away your stuff, I admire that.

Yep, it could get to be like that. I mean, a lot of stuff will be out of your worries, right? You don't have to think about the coffee table you've put out or the drawer you were always planning to put somewhere but couldn't decide where exactly. Shaving off extra stuff can be so relieving.

Well, I could've, but I was just anxious to get the stuff out of our flat as quickly as possible, and when it was gone I was so relieved, it was as if a weight has been lifted off my chest.

It is always a good idea to de-clutter 1 - 2 times a year. At the least this way it won't be a big job. It sounds like you have already done lots of it already so getting rid of more will be a reliever. I don't have much stuff anymore but seems like if I move to Arkansas where my boyfriend's mom is at we will have one big job to clear out. She is a huge hoarder.

It'll take a loooooooooooonnnnnnnnnggggggggg tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimmmmmme to get a hoarder to give up her stuff, trust me, I've tried for years!!! Ouch! I think for me, it was my mindset, and I've lately assured myself that having too much stuff wasn't healthy - either mentally or environmentally.

Yeah it will be quite a challenge but it is the only way I can live there. I visit her each year for a month and can't move anywhere in the house. The house actually belongs to my boyfriend and moving there is only under the condition that we rid some stuff. lol... I know she is not going to be happy but moving there means we will be taking care of her. Wish me luck as I do love her dearly.

As giftsandbags....just said where does all the stuff come from? Loads and loads!!! So the solution lies in controlling your urge to fill your house with stuff which you will soon require to get rid off. Am I right?

Yes, and I have been controlling my shopping urges big time since my credit cards maxed out after the monavie/TEAM scheme. Now that I'm regaining good credit, I've actually gotten OUT of the habit of whipping out the ol' plastic card and just using cash or my online banking. In fact, I'm now making about $20 per month online which is an additional amount that I'm able to transfer to my debt payments. My husband knows exactly what I'm buying and he's very pleased with my progress, too. The stuff that I have now are stuff that I've accumulated a few years ago.

You are very rich then. The great disadvantage of those stuffs would give you headache on thinking where to put and what to do to those. In the same way, when you give up on to it, inside you will feel you just waste your wealth. But anyway, if you don't need it, it's better to give or donate it, it would really help and of course it would be a charge to a good worth for you.

Well, rich compared to other parts of the world, but I'm also under this big fat debt, so getting rid of the stuff and the debt is proving to be a really good worth to me. :-)

Yes, I have stopped the crazy insane shopping and collecting about a year and a half ago, and last year I got rid of 2 pickup truck loads full of stuff, so this year it's simple going over what was left behind from what I couldn't bring my heart into letting go. I really do hope that I can let go of at least a van-load full of stuff this time around.
