What age do you think? Wondering if I should get one for my twelve year old?

I would probably wait one more year. As one other poster said, it does depend on what it's for. For active teenagers (like I said, wait until 13 years old), a cell phone can come in handy if soccer practice (or football, cheerleeding, band, etc) is running late. If they are with their friends at the mall (or wherever) it will come in handy to let you know where they are exactly. It will give you peace of mind if there is ever an emergency. There are phones and plans available where the parent has complete control over what numbers can be called from the phone. Once your child has demonstrated that s/he can be responsible with the phone, you could allow additional minutes or more freedom of usage.

My parents first let me get a cell phone at the age when I needed to get in touch with them at any point. I was constantly running around by myself or with friends and they wanted the comfort of knowing I was able to get help if I needed it. There isn't really an 'age'... it's opinion.

I also think 13 is a good age for a cell phone. However, those prepaid cell phones are nice thing for an under 13 child to have for emergency use and possibly to teach them how to budget their minutes. If they use them all up right away, then they have no more for 30 or 90 days whichever plan you have.

Like the other poster said, it would depend on the reason and also how responsible your child is. Maybe you could get a pay as you go type of phone, that way you wouldn't have to worry about your child running up a huge phone bill.

depends on what you are getting it for her for. Now my sister got a couple extra for her kids so when they had extra things to do after school they could call her when it was time to come home. I think it is crazy seeing all these lil kids running around with cell phones. This is the way I see it....If you get a kid a cell phone and for some reason the bill gets out of hand...you really can't blame the kid you bought the phone. I had a couple of friends that did this and ended up moving to the phones that you buy min. and there kids were given a card with a certain amount of minutes each month and once those were gone then they had to wait until the next time around. They got tired of the 200 to 500 dollar cell phone bills
