Apartment vs House.

Ok, so i've just moved house. I have moved from a 2 bedroom terrace house, with open plan living room and kitchen, dinky little kitchen, large bathroom, with walk in shower [no bath] and 1 massive double bedroom, and 1 barely double bedroom, to an apartment. My apartment has 2 bedrooms, HUGE, double bed in one with room to spare, and kingsize in the other, with room to spare. Huge open plan living room and dining room, bigger kitchen than i had before, smaller bathroom, but has a bath, AND a shower. It's also in a more well to do, quieter area. And has it's on front door, with one set of stairs up to the apartment. So, most would say I've gone up in the world? But the the thing is, have I? I had my own house. Like a house, and now I have an apartment. It couldn't be a family home, it's too much of an enclosed space. Sending your kids to their "room" wouldn't do much good, it's only across the hall from the living room. And isn't an apartment seen to be something cheaper, and not as sought after as a house? I don't really know. My rent is exactly the same.. but i'm closer, and within walking distance to my work, so i'm saving money on travel. So thats always a bonus. Plus, it takes little or no time to heat up, therefore saving money on gas.. But why when i say I live in an apartment, do people automatically assume council flat? It's a lovely apartment, and not a flat, in any means.. But people seem to turn their noses up at it?? So is a house bigger and better??

Hi chicksdigscars.. :) Do not bother what others said about which one is better, you are the one who living in it, right? :) The one which make you feel more comfortable and convenience then should be the better choice for you. I think so.. If you want to have an investment, a lot of people will told you that having a house is much better to choose, but the fact is not always like that. In investing, the point is gain money in high return and/or a faster way, right? Then, if you live in a house you think as your investment, that is so wrong. You live in the house, you pay the cost and gain no money as if you rent the house to others. Same as apartment. If you can earn money from the apartment you own, then that is called investment. So, in my opinion, having a house or an apartment is both good! than having none of them.. :D If living in an apartment can make you save more money and time than living in a house, then i think your choice to live in apartment is the best choice for you. People may say anything whether you like it or not, but this is your life, right? The one who told you that you are wrong leaving your house for an apartment maybe envy you, he/she just does not have as much money as you have.. :D or he/she is really smarter than you in choosing place for living..? :D just kidding, please do not take it to heart.. :) Anyway, have a great day! :)

For me, there's nothing wrong with the apartment compared to a house. You can live comfortably also in an apartment but most people living in an apartment has limited privacy. They are surrounded with neighbors on top, below and on every side where as in a house, you are the only one living in that building. You can have privacy that you always wanted.

i am worry about the schedule of cleaners... is it the obligation of the owner of the house or apartment? or the obligation of the occupants? to clean only their room occupied....

oh no it isn't like that at all. its MY apartment, i'm incharge of maintaining it. but i also need to state, my apartment, is NOT in an apartment block. my apartment is a large 4 bedroom house, turned into an upstairs and downstairs apartment. thats it. the only neighbour i have is the person below and they have their own door.. no communial hall way.

An apartment is similar in size to a 2 bedroom terraced house. An apartment might have a balcony and a house usually has a garden. In my home country a council flat or council flat are looked down on. Your apartment sounds excellent and it is lucky it is around the same rent per month. My first property that I bought I owned for 14 years. It was a grade 2 listed cottage. It had a lounge, a tiny kitchen, a bathroom, a large bedroom and a tiny bedroom. Then I moved into a 2 bedroom terraced house overlooking fields. I owned it for 5 years. Last year I moved into a 3 bedroom semi detached bungalow because my son is unable to walk. My second home cost more than my cottage and my bungalow lots more than my house. I need to update it more over the next few years.

hi! thank you! it really is excellent. i dont think i explained it clearly either. where i live is a quiet little cul-de-sac with 6 semi-detached 3 double bedroom houses. except mine is turned into an upstairs and downstairs apartment. however, when they turned it into an apartment, they put a wall, and extra door in, so the guy below me has his own door straight into his apartment, and i have my own door, straight into mine [well straight to a small flight of stairs that takes me up into my apartment] .. the apartment is huge, because the 2 bedrooms are obv the 2 double bedrooms, that would have been upstairs. the bathroom that would have been upstairs. and then my living room is what would have been a kingsize master bedroom, and my kitchen off it, is what would have been a large ensuite. so as you can imagine it's very big. and we share the garden, me and the guy below :) your cottage sounds gorgeous! i'd have loved to live in a cottage, but its always been my dream to live in a bungalow. i'm sorry about your son, but atleast you have found something accesible for him without having to make living ajustments ie-bedroom downstairs x

I prefer a house that i can call my own, with a small garden,or some space to sit and enjoy with friends. Or even a bigger space for some event and occasion to be held when family comes and have some fun where kids can run and play games. The privacy and enjoyment that i can share with my family matters most.

i have a garden. and i share it with 1 person. where the apartment is is a really quiet cul-de-sac. there are 3 semi-detached houses, so 6 houses altogether. and thats it. only my house has been turned into a 2 bed apartment :) we are upstairs. but they built a wall and a seperate door, so the guy below me never has to come anywhere near my apartment. no communial hallway or anything like that :)

In my opinion, a house is much better simply because of the limited amount of neighbors. In a flat or apartment, having neighbors all round, plus above and below, increases the chance of noise and tensions arising. What you haven't mentioned about your old terrace house is the loft space. That extra storage area is invaluable! Flats rarely have enough storage. Then a garden, no matter how small, is highly desirable.

hi :) i actually don't have any neighbours really. the apartment that i own is in a really quet cul-de-sac. there 6 semi-detached, 2 storey, 4 bedroom houses. 1 of these houses has been turned into an upstairs and a downstairs apartment. this is where i live, in the upstairs apartment. there has been a wall built, and an extra door put in, so i have my own door, that takes me directly to a small flight of stairs that would be in any house, and up into my apartment. i share no door, or hall way etc with the person living below me. from the outside, my "house" looks the exact same as the other 5 houses, except it is split into 2 apartments, and the rooms in the apartment are extremely large, as they were 2 double bedrooms, the large bathroom, and the giant ensuite master bedroom, which is now a living room with offset kitchen when it was made in an apartment. and i share the garden with my downstairs neighbour. but as i said the apartments are completely seperate. it would be like coming down your stairs and going straight out the front door. nothing is ajoining as they have their own door. :) :)

To be honest, I really don't care if I live in an apartment or in a house. They are just a single place or location. As long as you are "at home" in either of them, there's no telling of any difference either way. I'd prefer a home anytime than an apartment or a house. :)

For me it does not matter because both places have good and bad sides, I've lived in both. But I would like to have at minimum. I have one bedroom, a kitchen, bathroom, living room, large hallway, and a closet for winter supplies. And do not forget also the nursery.

is a house you can have a small garder -- same thing doesn´t happen with a flat. animals: in a house you can have everything --- in a flat you can have a cat, but you probably can't have a dog. space: more in a house. almost everything is better in a house.

i have a garden that i share with the other apartment. my apartment isn't in an apartment block, or like, has loads of apartments etc. it is one large house, that has been made into two large duplex apartments, one in what would have been the upstairs of the house, and one in what would have been the down. and we each have our own door to our apartment. no communial hallway etc. and the rooms are actually bigger than they were in my old house :)
