Soda drinking by high school students on the rise

A new study shows one in four high school students drink soda every day. A quarter of teens surveyed have at least one soda a day. Students purchase soft drinks from vending machines at Jones College Prep High School . The national survey found that teens drink water, milk and fruit juices most often. But a quarter say they have at least one soda each day. For all sweetened beverages, the figure is closer to two-thirds when other sugary drinks like Gatorade are counted along with soda. That seems to be less than in the past when more than three-quarters reported drinking a sugary drink each day. The survey of more than 11,000 teens was conducted last year. The results were reported Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. http://yourlife.usatoday.com/fitness-food/diet-nutrition/story/0//cdc-1-in-4-high-schoolers-drink-soda-every-day/48496744/1

Hi Ravisivan, I gathered from the article that though they are still consuming sodas and sugary drinks that it appears they are not drinking less then did before. Personally they should not offer then in the school cafeterias, at least the high schools and grammar schools here do not. Though it cannot be controlled at home, but at least during school hours it is the one less they will have. There really is no way to get the students from completely never drinking them, but I suppose good eating habits, must start when they are quite young, though it still will not guarantee that they will never drink and or consume them. But if they are to have started at a young age at home then perhaps many would not consume as many as they do. I personally have stopped all colas and sugar drinks myself now almost four years and can say that though I did not have very many of them while a child I use to consume quite a bit as a young adult.

It is good that HWG has stopped drinking colas. I for one am not drinking because of the sugar content in it. When you were young this much of soft drinks would not have been there in the market also. a suggestion given by stowy.. that vending machines should not be there in schools and public places is a good suggestion.

Yeah they do not have them in the schools here, not any candy vending machines either. Though the kids are not so happy with the daily menu, it is the only way they monitor healthy eating habits in schools.

Vending machines are almost everywhere in any public places. They claim to serve people, but they are more interested in making money like anyone. Soda vending machines have become SO American or possibly North American. (I don't know if this trend also develops in Canada.) In addition to possibly reaping some financial benefits, it seems like drinking soda is so inseparable for many. (That's what I mean by SO American - I may be vague still.) I would agree with some comments here that high schools should not endorse or accept any soda vending machines, but this is like asking many people to stop smoking. Even if there is no vending machines, somehow some students would probably bring or sneak in one. Not just kids and parents, many are getting to be reliant on sugary drinks. Some parents are drinking soda everyday and that habit somehow influence their children to do so.

Your observation that the habits of parents influence their children is well received. Parents should set an example to children by not drinking soda frequently--occasional usage ok. addiction should not be there.

I don't find that bad the drinking of soda, but rather it's bad drinking it every time. For instance, water is much better for that if you need to drink something, and particularly in schools it is not only the drinking what makes it bad, but also that someone is doing a nice business by promoting addictions on teens who take everything they see. For that reason, I would not allow drinking machines and all sort of "fast food" on schools, but instead only small kiosks managed by the school itself. That I think would be better for having both good habits on teens and helping the school finances as well.

As u rightly say drinking soda repeatedly within a day is not good for health. Hence schools should not have machines. At that age students may not be able to restrict themselves from drinking it quite often.

At my high school, they stopped carrying regular sodas in the drink machines. They still sold diet soda (as well as juice, flavored and plain water and milk). What worries me more than the fattening effects that the sugar in regular pop has is the carcinogen (potential cancer-causing agent) aspartame that is used to sweeten diet sodas. Not to mention, the acid in the soda is hard on teeth and bones as well. All this being said, I drink diet soda out of habit and find it hard to switch to other drinks even when I've tried, though I am not overweight.

If you drink once or twice in a week ok. When I posted this I had in mind people drinking colas in tins. Now that u are aware u will reduce slowly. The fact that u are not overweight is good. Drinking sodas or colas frequently affects teeth also. have a good day.

From the child hood some mother feed their children with soda or other drinks. Habit die hard and so the Children when they crow, they get addicted. So, it is the responsibility of parents , not to encourage their children to such drinks since childhood.

Habits normally begin at home. My children dont like soda drinks coz since small i teach them that soda drink is good for certain occasion only, if they are curious about the taste i let them try it. Sometimes telling them the truth is much better than giving unlogical answer that would make them try it later on behind our back some more.....

We never had soda machines when I was in school but there were still lots of overweight kids in school. I was among them. I agree there are healthier drinks...water being the best. Fruit juices might as well be soda pop because they are sweet also and filled with calories. A 12 ounce orange juice would be at least 150 calories or more. I am not sure I like the government telling us what our kids can and can't have. Me, as a parent should be the one to make decisions for my child.
