what is the reason behind the popularity of facebook

i have seen that facebook popularity is going on and on and currently no other sites are as famous as facebook.what might be the reason for this much huge success can any other site is capable to overcome the popularity of facebook why is facebook famous?

I believe the reason that facebook is so popular is that it is a good way that you can find lost friends and even family members,and then once you find them it is a good way to keep up with what they are doing. There are alot of games on there that people play that might be another reason. My wife just found some of her family thanks to facebook and I can stay in touch with some of my cousins I have not seen in along time. I use it every day.

it is famous because it was able to cater or give what other sites didn't, think of it as a bunch of other social networks in just one site, except for the blogging part.
also connecting with other users is easy because when you have the same interest or lets say went to the same school, you open up your connections to those that also like or go to the same school, thus adding someone you might have known but forgotten possible
