In a new city

So I moved to a new city recently for work and so far it is going well and I am getting along with my coworkers, but I am still a little lonely. I have met friends but they seem to all live so far away. I wonder how to meet people closer to me, or different ways to get to know my neighbors better. It would be so nice to have some friends close by to cook dinner for or do things in the area. How do you get to know your neighbors better or people in your area??
