Confused of what career to follow...Business Management vs. Nursing.

Philippines
June 30, 2011 1:26am CST
I just turned 40. I had 2 college education, Business Management and Nursing, became RN November of 2009. I never really had a promising career since i was a single Mom, I raised my son alone (though with some help from family) and my previous work (construction company) involves travelling from one site to the other, and did'nt really quite gave me a lot of opportunity to establish. But i had a good experience in business/office management. In 2006, i decided to take up Nursing and here i am working as a Nurse in our local hospital and feeling not fairly compensated. I am worried about my age, most of the employers in the middle east, new zealand, and other part of the world are hiring young Nurses. Now, i am in the state of confusion to what to do? Do i need to specialize in one area? But it will take another year. What if i will forget Nursing and embrace my old degree, am i competitive with the young crowd? I am confused...what's your views???

First, which career would you prefer? I am of the impression that nurses are always needed all over the world. I thought that you could go anywhere as a nurse and get work. There are so many opportunities in nursing. You can work in a hospital, doctor's office, clinic, assisted living housing, for a private family and many other places. Nursing is hard work but I would also guess very rewarding in other ways. Some nursing jobs pay well although you are not going to get rich being a nurse. It depends on your education and experience. As for Business Management, that too will depend on your education, experience and references. In a good economy, you might have a selection of jobs but in a bad economy, you might find yourself out of work. And as you get older, you might find competition from younger persons. Remember, we are an aging society. Persons are living longer and maybe better but these aging persons need a lot of medical care. We are going to need more and more nurses. My suggestion is to stick with nursing. Can you do both? Find a job using both your nursing and business management educations and experience.

Thank you for your very kind words. I just got my star and like yours, it is an eight. I am very happy and excited with my eight. I live in Central Texas. Nurses are not getting rich but it seems to me that they are well compensated. This is true of The whole United States. Nurses get good money as well as benefits but it is hard and demanding work. It is also very rewarding work. What type of nurse are you? Can you give me an idea of what compensation is? Do you also get benefits? Sometimes benefits add up. Don't you also get raises and promotions?

Yes, i saw you have a yellow start today with an 8 inside! Congratulations! I know Nurses over there in the US are paid so high, and higher and higher as their experience gets longer. Honestly, one of the reasons why a lot of Asian take up nursing course is that they want to work abroad but want to spend their earnings in their country. And it makes sense because our currency value is so low like $1.00 -43 Philippine peso. Imagine the salary over their multiplied 43x when they come home to spend. I am working for 2 years in surgical-orthopedic ward. I think what Nurses earns over day in 1 day is equal to our 1 month salary here:) We get our own health insurance by ourselves. Raises and promotions? I don't think so, not until you belong to a big clan and your clan will commit to give all your votes to your Mayor in the next election.:) My employment is contract and renewable every 3 months, i think they make us contractual so they can not give us bonuses during Christmas and year end. What can I do, that is what our system of employment here works. But when it comes to patient care, I am still give out my best to my patient. I am working based on standards. Thank you bostonphil for the respond. Good PM from the Philippines!

Hi Bostonphil! I think i have to rate yours as the best response because i find it so detailed, although i also like the other responses. Thank you so much for your valuable response, i will remember what you say. Actually, i am giving myself a year to finalize everything. I working presently in a local hospital here in my place, although i like the set up because it will take only 10mins to get there, i have my home here with could make expenses less, my family and friends are nearby. It's just that compensation is too low. I hope i will be enlightened by you mylotters as i am really in the state of dilemma. Thanks for the responses, enjoy your day!

You have to sit down and decide which field will make you the most happy and follow that path. There will always be younger people trying to make it that field but when you are passionate about your chosen field , it is an extra plus. A hiring agent Should want to hire the older worker that not only Knows what she is doing but also brings that fire to succeed. So figure out whay field you love most and go for it! Good Luck.

Yes, you are true. I can't do 2 completely different fields are the same time. I both love them but i know i have to forget one of them to do great to the other one. At this point of time, i really don't know, but presently I am working as a Nurse and I am trying to get an experience in a special area. I hope i can clear all these confusions in the days to come. Thank you for the response!

The demand for nurses has been on a constant decline. And add that to the ever increasing numbers for nursing graduates. It would in your best interest to pursue a business career.

Do what you must. But a word of advice, I know a lot of nurses. A lot of them have gone through the experience and certification route. Really up to know the are still in the Philippines working for the local hospitals due to its very very hard to get a a nursing job oversees as a nurse unlike a couple of years ago. Taking the business management route, I would advise not to take the pawn role. Really taking up business management means that you are preparing to manage your own company and not someone else'. If you have the dough, start a little business. Hover and supervise it. And hopefully you end up another Mang Inasal in the works.

I know that every year Nurses are increasing in a huge number in the Philippines. I have a little advantage compared to the nee Nurses because i already have experience and i have some training and seminars, too. But i will have listen to what my heart says. Thanks for the respond!

Thank you for the respond, you sound like you are so mature and so much experience in the world but i was surprised you are only 30? You know at this point of time, i am really in a state of dilemma . I want to proceed to a career that will give me and my son a better life. But whatever comes to my decision, that will be coming from my heart. Thank you for your support. :)

I don't doubt your competency against younger nurses but what you mention is real.Due to surplus of nurses, most countries prefer to hire younger nurses.Well, some countries are still hiring up to 45 as long as you have good experience. I think your decision should depend on your goal.If you can have enough income doing business/office job,I think it's better for you to continue your career. There's no need for you to continue your nursing career if your only aim is to go abroad and gain more income.Your kids needs you the most especially that you're a single mom.I think it's better to apply your nursing skills on them.

I'm glad to hear that,at least you're not really pressured to support your son's studies. If you really want to continue your nursing career, you should have at least 2 years solid nursing experience preferably in special areas. It's better if you'll apply in the U.S or European countries because they don't have much age discrimination unlike Asian and middle-eastern countries.

Yes of course, i know that they prefer experienced Nurses rather than young and new but with less experience. I know countries in the US and Europe are always short of healthcare workers, I want to go there too, maybe in the future. Who knows i will be the next Florence Nightingale of the modern times. Hehehe. Have a nice day!

Hi Kareenmadivina! To give you a clearer picture to my personal background, I am single Mom but my only son is 19 and he is no longer living with me but he has to live near his school. In the past 3 years, my son only comes home every vacation and he told me just recently that after graduation (hopefully April next yr) he will then be looking for a job. It means that i will be living alone and will take care of myself alone, too. By that time, i will be free to choose where to go and what to do with my life. Thank you for your respond!

Hi there! I am currently working as a nurse. I just passed the dec.2010 licensure. Like you, I am also working without receiving proper compensation or should i say, no compensation at all. I agree that you specialize on an area because that would be a plus factor. And also, take time to study masters thru online. With that you can work as a clinical instructor for the meantime and when you finished your masters, you get to be promoted! And since you are a business mgt graduate, you can start a simple business while working as a nurse. There are a lot of options, however, it really needs a lot of time and investment. Do not be too much conscious with your age because your skills and knowledge will determine your success! Soar high and aim for excellence and everything else will follow! God bless you colleague!

Hi colleague! Thank you so much for your comprehensive explanation, i was looking up to your words and they are inspiring, honestly, specially when i found out that you are still in 20s. You have a mature mind. Yeah, i am just lucky that here in my place, we do not have too many Nurses that will result to volunteering and get abused by not compensating at all. We also volunteered but for a short period of time and we weren't paying the hospital to accommodate us. We know that to get the RN license isn't easy, so maybe i have to consider sticking to my recent career. I already started this, perhaps, i should finish what i was aiming for. But i give myself time to think about. Good luck to both of us! Take care.

It is all about finding your passion honestly. My mother went back to school at around your age and completed her PhD at 50 years old. She had no idea what she was going to do for a career at that age, but she knew she wanted to go back to school. By the time she had finished she was offered a job at the University she graduated from and will be able to retire in her mid 60s. I know that sounds old, but my mother is young at heart and no one believes she is as young as she is. Take a chance and follow your heart without knowing where the future will take you. It may surprise you! By the way, she just got remarried too!

Your Mom's story is so inspiring. Yes, i will do a lot of weighing and thinking and listening of my heartbeat to what path i should follow. And the exciting part of your Mom's story is that she got remarried, what is her age then? Nice. Bye the way, i see the number beside your name! Welcome to mylot and i hope you will enjoy your time here. Welcome onboard!

You're mom's story is really inspiring. She sounds a lot like me (and I'm 30!) What I can take away from your mom is that you can never be too old to take chances and that it's certainly never too late to do something new. Your mom sounds like a smart lady and I won't be surprised if she looks younger than her age :)

Involving yourself in business is promising, specially if one has a real background in business. It is also challenging working in a business firm. Thanks for the respond!

I'm with the people who said to follow the path where is more gratification. I on the other hand say go with Business Management. Nursing has its own rewards but managing a business or starting your own places you at the helm of your own fate. If you can merge the two areas, why not? Competitiveness is something that you should overcome (I'm right there with you...I have to strengthen my resolve! haha). There's nothing that can make you competitive than by actually going there. I hope you make a decision, and a well informed one that! :) Good luck to us both!

Hi redmaryjane! Well, i am giving myself 1 year to weigh in things. And while i am still in a dilemma, i continue working as a nurse here in our local hospital. Who knows there might be a clearer picture in the days ahead. Thanks for the support, and good luck to both of us. Thanks for the respond!

Choose which one will truly make you happy. Have you asked others if at that age , you can still be employed abroad? Once, that is answered, then you can also determine if you still need to specialize in other aspects. It is important that a job, should be rewarding, specially if you have to work a living in order to sustain your life and most importantly your son. However, if you are not happy doing it, why insist yourself in it.

Yes, that is why i am weighing things seriously. I have asked some work agencies abroad and there are still hospitals who hired older nurses but with longer experience and with experience in special field, too. I would like to follow my heart, thanks..:)
30 Jun 11
you should follow your heart and do what feels right. Plus could you not combine the two? what country are you in? i have worked in hospitals in uk and they have a CPD system. You can go on courses for your own personal development. Would there not be a work based course you might get something out of? speak to your manager about further opportunities.

Hi namccull1! I am from the Philippines my dear, and the system in the health institutions here are different from yours over there. You won't believe me but i worked 9 months volunteering before i get my first pay. Tough eh? Everything is politically motivated here, so bad. I hope there will be solution in my recent dilemma. Thank you for your response.
