How do you feel about texting or talking on cell phones while driving?

Personally, I think that it is very foolish of people to do. If it is something very important, why can't they simply pull over somewhere? However, unfortunately, most of the time when people are texting or talking while driving... it isn't about anything of importance. It's just socializing. I think socializing should be done elsewhere, like at home. Just not on the road. Driving is very dangerous, and you need to be concentrating on the road, not anything else. Not only do you need to watch what you are doing, you need to watch out for the other drivers as well. What do you think? Is texting or calling while driving alright in your eyes? Or, do you feel the same as me? Let's discuss!

Very dangerous indeed - and an arrestable offense in most of Europe, I believe. There was a scientific study a while ago that figured out 1 in every 200 people could actually drive and phone without being dangerous, but it's a very rare ability. The law here states that you have to stop, unless you have a hands-free installation (which doesn't cover texting, obviously).

As Angelee stated, we have similar laws here in the US. It is illegal to talk on the cell phone without a hands-free device, and I also believe that it is illegal in many (if not all) states to text and drive. What does surprise me, however, is the responses on here. I know that texting is dangerous, and dialing the phone while driving is dangerous as well. Still, I see plenty of people here that are obviously using the cell phone without a hands-free device, so they obviously do not see anything wrong with it, even though it is illegal. Based on this, I would think that more people on here would not think is was that dangerous. What I would like to know is if it is similar in the UK. Do people say that it is dangerous as well as illegal and yet still do it anyway? Do you see many people doing this on the roadways?

Hello all. It is a dangerous practice to use cell phone for talking even hands-free. As someone brought in the saying even the co-passengers are not allowed to disturb the concentration of the driver while driving, it is difficult to concentrate on driving 100% while talking hands-free or otherwise. We can see here in our city (Hyderabad, India) even pedestrians walking on the road talking on the mobiles recklessly creating unnecessary hazards. (walking in the middle of the road is quite a common sight here as the footpaths have disappeared to give way for encroachment, vehicle parking or even street hawkers). All of this goes to show how people can ignore the basic safety norms, despite the prevalent rules, and risk lives of others as well theirs. Good point brought for discussion, Angel.

Hi Spike, Thanks for responding! Yes, I believe the law is the same here in the US. It is okay to talk to someone via a hands-free device... but otherwise, you must be stopped.

Well, I am going to have to go against the masses on this one. I do feel that texting is extremely dangerous while driving ... not just the texting part but reading the received messages as well ... and it should wait until a later time or at least pull over to the side of the road if it really is that important. I think that if you have a 'hands-free' device for your phone, though, then it is alright to talk on the phone while driving. I do not see it as any different than talking to a passenger, and many people do this all the time without a problem. In fact, I get very bored when driving if I do not have someone to talk with or music to listen to and sing along with. I think that I would probably be more dangerous if I couldn't talk or listen to music, especially if I decided to accidentally take a nap from being bored.

I believe that most places in the United States it is illegal to talk on a cell phone unless you have a hands-free device. I also think many places have made it against the law (or are at least in the process of making it against the law) to text and drive. I think that there is a difference between talking on the phone while driving and texting or trying to dial a phone number. It is much the same as listening to the music (and possibly singing along with the music) while driving is different than trying to change a CD when driving.

I am going to have to agree to disagree with you on this one, Mike. I will agree that talking on the cell phone might not be exactly the same as talking with a passenger, but I actually think that in some cases it might be safer, although I am sure that it is not true in all cases. Think about this, when you are talking with a passenger many times there is some sort of eye contact made while driving, which means that you are taking your eyes off the road for a period of time ... generally only a couple of seconds but it could be longer. However, when you are on the phone there is no eye contact, so it is not necessary to take your eyes off the road for even a second. I would think that the latter would be safer, although with the former you do have a second pair of eyes to help alert you of any danger.

Hi purple, Thanks for responding! I agree with you. I don't see anything wrong with using a hands-free device to talk. It is indeed pretty much the same as talking to a passenger in the vehicle. That is why it's not against the law (here) to use a hands-free device to talk. I only think it is dangerous when your eyes are off the road when texting, or when you do not have two hand on the wheel when talking on a cell phone.

There is a saying that says "do not talk to the driver while the vehicle is in motion". This holds true because the concentration of the driver will be divided and he might meet an accident on the road. Texting and talking on the phone is very dangerous and there are so many reported accidents here in our country even though it is very prohibited here.

Hi junrapmian, Thanks for responding! I agree. There are also many reports of accidents caused by texting or talking while driving, and it's illegal here as well. Unfortunately, just because something is made illegal, it doesn't mean people will stop doing it.

I got some views regarding this. Yeah, I think texting should be prohibited while driving. The driver is sure to lose concentration if they text while they drive. However, I think calls can be accepted durign driving if and only if their phone is subscribed on a hands-free equipment. I do believe that taking a call on a hands-free or just plain talking at that matter is doable and not hazardous while driving. Sometimes, trying to converse with the driver has it's own advantages. It keeps the driver awake and alert knowing someone is still up and talking during the wee hours of the night. It prevents the driver from snoozing off a bit as talking to someone will not give him a chance to do so. Just my two cents!

Now there's a good way to get your account banned, Xiao.

I agree! My husband does this sometimes and it drives me crazy!!! I'll tell him that if he needs to text so bad, hand the phone to me in the passenger seat and *I* will text for him. It scares me to have him not watching the road like that, I wish they would pass a law against it here too! Of course I have been guilty of this myself but only when I was STOPPED in a traffic jam LOL, I am too scared to look away from the road!

I have done this many times with my oldest daughter, especially when my sister was alive. I would be driving and my daughter would have the phone. My sister would be texting us (she was at work and it was safer for her to text than talk on the phone), and my daughter would read what she texted and then type back our response. It was a fun and safe way to keep in touch, especially since we had a long drive most days.

Hi hdc4free, It would drive me crazy too! It's really scary to have someone driving while texting or talking on the phone! You just know there is a risk. Here where I live, there is a law against it... but sadly, it doesn't stop people from doing it. People will break the law no matter how strict the consequences are. ... and I agree. If there is a passenger in your vehicle, it is much safer to let them text instead of the driver.

I don't think it's a very smart thing to do. Drivers get easily distracted doing anything while they drive. Texting is the worst though in my opinion. The driver becomes completely distracted and barely pay attention to the road. Talking on the phone is still bad, but at least the driver can pay some attention to the road. So many accidents are caused by texting and driving and even while people talk on the phone. It's a dangerous habit and I think that there should be stricter laws to enforce cell phone use while driving.

I even heard on the radio today that texting while driving is worse than drinking and driving, which is pretty scary. I've heard that there are laws in parts of the U.S., but my state hasn't done anything about it yet

I don't know about that. You would think drinking while driving would be worse. To be honest, I don't think it would make too much of a difference if they did make it illegal where you live, because just because it's illegal, doesn't mean people will stop doing it.

Hi courtknee525, I agree. It's definitely not a smart thing to do! Yes, I think texting is a bit more dangerous than talking, because you must avert your eyes from the road while texting. However, both are indeed dangerous. Here in the US, there are laws against texting or talking while driving, unless you are using a hands-free device. However, most people still do it anyway... which is very unfortunate.

I hate it when people do this! Some people can safe drive and talk on the phone. But some people can't talk on the phone and drive safe. The texting I don't think anyone should attempt to do this while driving. It's just an accident waiting to happen. Many people have lost their life due to this. I hate to see people trying to text and driving at the same time, stupid move!

Hi Angelee, Many places have made it illegal to text and drive and I think they should. I don't know how people do it anyway. I'll be driving along and my daughter will text me and I really can't even read the text while driving, let alone text her back. Talking isn't quite so bad because at least your eyes are on the road. What is dangerous is when the phone rings and they are fishing around trying to find it while driving. It'd be nice if people would just use common sense and we wouldn't need all these laws for every little thing but it is well known that many accidents have been caused by texting and driving and yet you still see it all the time.

I talk on the cell phone while driving, but I don't text. Texting is dangerous enough when driving with out the added issue of me having a touchscreen phone now. And I do agree that driving is dangerous enough. If it is raining out or a lot of traffic I won't even talk on the phone and drive, but sometimes it is just necessary to answer a call while driving. Where I live it is illegal to text and drive, but it is not yet illegal to talk on the phone and drive.

The way I see it, talking on a hands-free device is the safest way if you with to communicate with others in your car. Simply talking on a cell phone in the next safest, however it can still be dangerous in some cases. And texting is the most dangerous form of communication in the car.

I do feel the same.It is an offensive and illegal case here in India. The driver must have high degree of concentration while driving.Texting or calling while driving will greatly erode the concentration of the driver. We all know it is too dangerous. But still most of the people uses the phone while driving. The main reason in my opinion is the fast moving world.TIME is precious,But LIFE is more precious. We must put hands together to provide consciousness in society so that we can save our brothers.

You know there is something called blue tooth or headset? Many phones come with it. But some can be bought just like that from any phone store. I am not sure why people spend a whole lot of money in getting a new phone, but show no interest in getting one of those tools. They are actually very helpful. I use a headset and it always allows me to drive at ease. But from my business communication class, I came to know that many people text while driving and this actually causes accidents. This is outrageous. Text messaging requires concentration and so does driving. No matter how one boasts of multitasking those two cannot go hand in hand. But recently, my boyfriend told me that he even saw people read books while driving. I had a hard time believing that. But I know he was telling the truth. Many people just like to get the thrill out of driving. But that should not be taken as a joke. Doing anything while driving is dangerous. I live in California and here we are given ticket if we are caught by cops talking on the phone while driving. A headset or blue tooth is the option they told us to go for. But people don't listen to their suggestion and carry on using the phone without that tool. Some even drive too slow when on the phone. It slows down the traffic. I cannot explain to you how angry I feel about it.

I think in some countries texting or using the phone while driving is a crime. A lot of accidents have happened because of this. This has caused the untimely deaths of many people just because some drivers did not use their conscience or common sense. This should be banned everywhere. Drivers who are caught doing this should be reported and should be jailed.

Yes, I agree with you. If it's something important, pull over somewhere. If it isn't, put it off for later when you've reached your destination. This has caused a lot of road accidents already.

As long as the person can truly multi task by driving correctly and talking I do not mind the talking on the phone as much as I HATE texting while driving. I have seen too many people almost hit another (including almost hitting me!) vehicle when texting on the phone while driving. It makes me nuts!

I really don't understand how anyone can text or speak on the phone while driving. Nothing can be important enough to jeopardise your own life and the lives of others, just to take a phone call? As you said, it's easy enough to pull over if its really that urgent. It would be interesting to know how many accidents are caused because of people on their cell phones - I'm sure a lot could be prevented if laws were tightened on this or if people actually got the message about how dangerous and foolish it is!!

Of course, i must agreed with you. Because it is unwise to danger one own life on the road just because wanting to text or talk on the phone with their loves ones or someone very important. It is wise to stop the car at the side, in case need to talk or text someone important at the very moment. We must always remember that we only have 1 life and must always take good care of it. So far, no one have 9 lives like cat, right?

Now,days the technology is being more improved that no one walks in the road without cellphones.Basically, the rays passed by the cell is more dangerous to our ears. The most important thing with all the people is that, they have started to have conversations, with cellphones during driving also.It is the most stupid thing that most people does. Why do people do like these?Offcourse they know its not good and advicable thing. So,my point of view is that, people have to concentrate in only driving, let it be at any cost. The family members should also advice them not to use cellphones while driving. Now, a days there we can watch very well watch in tv regarding the harmless of using cellphones, and its our foolishness to do even though we are aware of these things. So,we are the responsible person who should totally avoid these things.

Yes, it is not only dangerous for the one using the mobile device... but for others that may be on the road as well! Safety is much more important than chatting with others. If it's something extremely important, there is no reason they cannot pull over to text or call.
