On Reality Talent Shows

They're all over, aren't they?
It's not always about the talent though, sometimes, it's the story behind the talent or the performer that had us crying, or laughing, or amazed, astonished, frustrated, shocked, surprised, awed out, and all other mixed emotions.
Are you an avid viewer?
Do you think there is glory in the way grandwinners are chosen?

I find most talent based reality shows to be much like buying a lottery ticket...it's the dream of winning that's the fun!!! Actually, only a small percentage of winners ever make it really big!!! I'm getting sick of most of the talent shows & I've long been tired of the celebrity "follow me" shows!!! The networks love them simply because they are CHEAP to produce & increase their profits!!! I will be THRILLED when most of the viewers STOP watching them so I can get some GOOD shows back!!! I've stopped watching American Idol & So You Think You Can Dance. And I do believe that this will be my LAST season of America's Got Talent!!! I find the modeling shows boring & I could give a rat's azz what the Kardashians or Paris Hilton are doing every day. I saw a show about reality shows the other day & I forget which celebrity it was that said "We go upstairs & put on our makeup & then I look at my kids & say it's time to put on your happy face & just get through this!!!" I'm NOT so stupid that I can't pick up on the scripted parts of the so-called reality show!!! The ONLY way to get rid of them is to NOT watch them...NO profit...NO show. It's that simple!!!! So, I'm STOPPING!!!!
I did enjoy The Voice this year & look forward to watching it next season; but I'm prepared to lose interest in it quickly too!!! If any talent show has hope for making a difference, I think it might be The Voice!!! Still, I could live until I die without seeing another taping of The Voice!!!!
I think it's time reality shows just GO AWAY!!!!

I have more or less enjoyed watching these shows up until the last year or two. I'm not sure exactly what they are doing, but most are beginning to become more scripted than reality & that bugs me tremendously!!! Since they are just beginning to bloom in your country, you may have many more years of them if you follow what we've had here. I didn't see your comments as being anti reality shows...however, you did give me an open forum to release my frustrations!!! In one of my discussions ranting about reality shows, I was told that if I didn't like them I had the option to turn it off. Well, I'm voicing not only my frustrations, but my willingness to actually TURN THEM OFF!!! Assuming that the networks are surfing for opinions...this is my letter of COMPLAINT!!!

Oh, I know how you feel. At times I wish I could email some shows and beg them to stop whatever it is they are doing!
There are shows that I have stopped watching simply because the succeeding seasons have lost their appeal. They've gone redundant, predictable, and the participants become rather boring.
However, there are new ones coming, creating new sensations. So far, reality shows are not a dying trend.

I say that media has a way on putting up reality talent shows into business. Story lines are good ways to market the show and it's events. But sometimes, I get too irritated on some exaggeration or aspects of the plot that the media is trying to put up. In my opinion, those reality talent shows are leaning towwards the likeness of popularity contests than the talents itself. That's why they should make plots which will get the viewership caught into it. Just my two cents in here!

That is very true. In fact, it's happened many times here.
I recall one singing-oriented reality show where a very good singer got voted out just because she was Fil-Am (Filipino American) who grew up in the States and apparently didn't have many supporters from her birth province.
I say, text voting should not be the deciding factor as to who gets to stay or not. It can be one of, but not the only, criterium. What's the use of having judges and mentors if in the end, it's all about popularity?

That's the sad reality.
Anybody who got the potential to fill up seats and get the sentiments of the crowds will come up on top. That's how the business in media goes. Anybody where the industry can have good profits is welcome to be a winner!

I truly agree on that. It's just sad however that some good performers don't make it simply because they don't have the support of their locality. What is annoying as well, is a half-baked talent who happens to have the right connections.

We Filipinos have soft hearts and we always go for the person who needs the money the most - basing it on his/her story.
Great examples would be Jovit Baldivino and Marcelito Pomoy. Their struggles in life have so far touched the hearts of the many that's why they voted for them to win in the finals.

Thank God they are also talented, otherwise, we all breed stars who only have sad stories to tell.
There was one grandwinner who also had such a dramatic story on TV, and even won the grand prize. Reality was, he was not as destitute as he claimed to be. Many people knew this guy and also knew that he has a booming business back home.
Too late though because he has won the sympathies of the people and won the grand prize

I use to be an avid viewer but not so much now. Not because I am not interested but am doing other things currently for which in the past I use to own a DVR and use to be able to tape many of them. Though some are silly and or st@pid, I can honestly say for me they were stress relievers. In that I mean there are many times I could sit and laugh away of the silliness and then times I teared about hearing of their personal lives.
I do know several personally here in IL who have been on reality shows and was shocked to see what their REAL lives were like. Not that it was bad but more that I got an indepth view of their life struggles. I can say some of the ones I know have made it big in TV land. Though many today do not enjoy the reality shows, personally I do/did enjoy it for entertainment.

I would have to admit that reality shows do have an amount of magic. Especially that most of them showcase common people.
Like you I used to follow some of them religiously, but now, I just tend to watch the grand finals and see who wins!

I have to say that I don't watch many reality talent shows. I watched a couple seasons of American Idol and I think the season (think it was the sixth season) that had a singer named Sanjaya says everything what you mean. I remember that Simon always criticizes him and he always stay on the show. Simon stopped of criticizing him because he saw that not matter what he say, Sanjaya was loved by all.
I saw the Susan Boyle's season of Britain's Got Talent too and, of course, I was rooting for her. Her history was sooo amazing! I saw her video a million times!

Susan Boyle was truly a sensation! We need that kind of story once in a while to remind us about real talent and true beauty.

Hello theresa
,
I believe it was the best thing for us to imitate the show, it seems that we have seen more talented Filipinos than any other filipino talent shows out there. THough, am not addicted or avid viewer of this show, i have seen ordinary people rise to shine with out any kind of connections what so ever.

There are imitations, variations from the original version, but most of the reality shows that I have seen especially on ABS are franchises. ANd I enjoy them just as much.
What is wonderful about these talent shows is that they give chances to common people who are unheard of because they lack connections, or the looks, or simply, the funds.
