We just started a compost pile here. I know what can go in it but I am not sure how much of each item to put in. Please help!

What I used to use when I made my own organic compost was a kit. It was a box where I was able to store all the vegetable peels and fruit skins etc and came with 50 worms which helped eat them and convert it good and healthy soil. I would suggest getting a container to get everything in and finding some worms.

I will consider getting a container. As for the worms, can I just find them in our yard or do I need to purchase a special variety? I was thinking any old worm will do. Thanks for your response!

You can use regular earth worms for sure.

Honestly, I just dump it all in. I find that the mixture of material is not as important as making sure that you keep mixing up the pile (I use on old-fashioned pitch fork---I want to get one of those barrels someday). That and making sure that it is not too dry or too moist. My father used to throw everything in the pile too without worrying about how much of each item went in.

I will make sure to mix it, thank you for your post. We throw all veggie scraps, egg shells and coffee grinds in there and some yard clippings. We too hope to get a container for it.

A cheap and easily put together complst pile is by using "pallats (the ones that things are piles on for transport). Take 4 of these and connect them together leaving one side open or easily opened (for getting things out). Now you have a "square place to put your scraps, manure and ohter things such as leves hay etc, in.You can start the compost going by putting in some already to use compost or even some good garden soil in the mix. The more that you turn it and keep it moist but not dripping wet, the faster it will decompose.also the smaller the items are when put it, the quicker it will break down to usable compost.

I am learning to make a better compost with the aid of internet. Just search for "compost" and check in several places so that you find the nearest to suit your needs. There are some sites that want you to buy expensive containers. I did not want that. I found sites where you even use the newspaper you have around.
