How do you fully prepare?

My husband and I are thinking about moving somewhere there is more work for him so he doesn't have to keep leaving to find work. I'm trying to think of all of the things that we need to be prepared for this move...I know there's going to be a TON of packing and things of that sort, not so much fun. Have you moved recently? How did you prepare for it? What things did you do before you moved? I'm trying to think of every little detail so I don't forget to do anything. Some advice?? =)

I've been traveling and moving with my family most of my life and after a while I got use to packing, but I can't imagine how tough it might be for someone who isn't use to it or just hasn't had much practice with moving like I have, Well I know what we could have done better when it comes to moving but unfortunately we don't get do overs lol Just take it one step at a time, label all your boxes so you'll know whats in them don't worry too much, because that will only make moving more stressful for you, there's no way to fully prepare for a big move there are only strategies you can use to help things go more smoothly, and looking back on all the moving I've done I wish I had applied some of the strategies I know of now, such as make a check list of all the things that need to be done before the big move that can help too I hope my post helps you a little, look on the brite side at least you won't have to travel with two pets your siblings, and parents on a long road trip in hot stuffy car until you reach your destination LOL it was fun and stressful all rolled into 100 trips hahaha.

Thanks for your response! Well I have moved in the past but I want to be more prepared than I was in the past. Usually it happens so fast I just do it and go. This time I have a little more time to prepare so I want to think of everything. A checklist is a very good idea! =) I will be moving with my husband, 3 children and 2 big dogs!! Not much better. LOL No AC in the car either =( Hopefully I will be prepared once the time comes...

WOW! LOL your situation sounds a lot like the way mine use to be, but you've got farm animals instead of kitty cats high five too you, because I know how tough traveling that way can be you have to be a real strong person to handle all that.

Some years ago, I also moved my family. Not only to a different state, but to a different country. There were a lot of anxiety before the move, as it was the first time I've had to do it, specially with a one year old son. So, my motto was to make it really simple. Just bring the things that I absolutely need, that wouldn't be in the new place. I had a garage sale so I could dispose of all the unwanted stuff, and the rest were given to family. It was a bit difficult at first, but it was like a fresh start. Good luck to you!

Yeah that's what I am going to do also is have a big sale of all of the things we don't need or use anymore. Yeah at this point we really need a fresh start that is for sure. =) Thanks for the advice!

The other advice here is all good, so I'll just add a thumbs up for the "get rid of everything you don't need" opinion and one piece of my own advice: pay someone to pack and move for you. I moved to France in an MX-5 (Miata in the US). You know, the roadster with 2 seats and a boot/trunk the size of a matchbox? I only took the absolute essentials. Over 7 years later, I moved back - and needed half a full-sized truck to carry all the crap I'd accumulated. I reckon about a third of it is still in boxes: it's all pointless junk. I also moved something like 8 times in 10 years and the absolute best one was when I paid someone to pack, clean up after and ship everything. Yes, it's expensive but ohhhhh, it's SO worth it! Zero hassle, zero stress and any breakage is insured.

Yeah we will definitely be getting rid of most stuff. We don't use half of what we have honestly. A lot of our stuff is still in my closet doing nothing. Maybe after work today I will go through and start selling stuff.

Before going to somewhere we don't be like "hurry-burry", we have to make a clear plan. When we have to start?, what things we have to carry, make a clear notes, and we have to re- check it while we are moving. And we have to inform to our neighbors or to our friends about our journey.

i moved home recently. what i did first was arrange for my post to be forwarded to my new address, from the day i moved, onward for a month. the i started gathering boxes, upon boxes, upon boxes, and see anything lying around the house, that was just lying around not really getting used? i put it in the boxes. i know your meant to have clothes. pots & pans. glasses, that kinda of thing, but a few random things didn't hurt, and it meant they were away! basically i packed the clutter.. then i started packing books, dvds, things that you have, probably on book cases and you'd think to pack them last, pack them first!! all spare plates! live enough plates in the cupboards to do the whole family, for 2 days without washing.. same with glasses, cups and forks & spoons etc, pack the rest away [but remember to leave the box open, to put the rest away later.. next pack pajammas.. and jeans, and all your good clothes, things you know fine rightly uou won't wear.. but again, leave the boxes open. my advice would be to try and clear a room, or a large space of a room, even if it means moving furniture around, and everything being all squashed up.. and have a square, or rectangular space in a room, or a whole spare room, dedicated to the boxes. but leave all the boxes open. this is so important. because little things that you come across can just be slipped into another box, if you pack a good lot of shoes and clothes that you know you wont really anytime soon, you can put the shoes and clothes that you have hbeen wearing, and have kept out just incase, closer to moving time, because the boxes will be open :) ..this is my advice so far :) .. OH!! one more bit of advice, try and put all your food, and plates etc, into as little cupboards as possible, squish them all in, but then clean the cupboards that you have empty.. it gives you a head start on what you have to do for moving. and also, clean the toilet, sink, shower etc, after you use it.. because by the time moving day comes around, everything will have stayed clean :) :)

Yeah your right. This is a great idea of doing things! I will definitely leave the boxes open for a while until everything is packed and ready to go! You have been a BIG help, thank you!

It is a difficult task to move in to a new place because you need to pack things up and unpack them after you moved in to your new place. Anyway, if you are sure of moving to another place then start packing your things now. Start with the things that you don't usually use and leave those things that you are using everyday. You can also start looking for a truck that will carry your things to your new place, this way you can avoid rushing and you can find cheaper price for trucking services. I hope this help you!

Yeah we are sure that were moving. I am going to start packing little by little. I usually do one room at a time so I don't miss anything or leave things behind that we need. You did help, thanks for the advice!

Sell as much as you can, is my best advice. Get ride of as much as you can possibly ditch. And here is why... I can't even count the number of times I heard about someone moving, only to find they can't stand where they moved too. Nothing is more bothersome, than to pack up tons and tons of stuff, cram it into a new place, start unpacking it all, and then 6 months later, pack it all up again because you can't stand where you are. I learned this the hard way, because I had all this junk. I packed it up, moved out of my parents house into an apartment, and 12 months later packed it all up again, moved to a new spot. Packed it all up again, and moved to another spot. And then I realized that most of the stuff I was dragging around, I never used anyway. Sell it. Let someone else who will use it, have it. The only other advice I would give, is that you should not buy a house until you have lived there at least a year. Usually by 12 months, you kind of have a feel for whether you are going to be staying awhile. And then you get get a place close to where you work. Just remember the old saying 'never count your chickens before they hatch'. Funny how these old farm terms are still deadly accurate in our modern society. What that means is, don't go off buying a house because you got a job. Or run to a new city before you have job. When he lands a good job, then move there. You don't want to end up somewhere, and be out of work for months with a newly expensive rent.

Your right and I am going to be selling a whole lot soon. There are tons of things that none of us probably even know is there! LOL. Yeah most of what we have we don't really need or use anymore. We are planning on renting first for sure. I wouldn't want to buy a house and then we hate it where we live. I agree with that one. Thanks for the advice!
