What does it mean to be an AMERICAN?

Hello Lotters, I know this is a Broad and General Subject. a lot will explain in terms of politics, culture, principle, belief. But most importantly they will mention about FREEDOM, INDEPENDENCE and DEMOCRACY...... The reason why I asked this question is that there was a time where I almost made it to US. I know some people knew that I was referred for a House Keeping Job at the Pepper-mill and you know what that is. That Question pop into my head over and over again when ever I think about going there. Luckily, I failed twice. *most Filipinos in the Past refer United States as an American Dream, Greener Pasture, your Future and stuff like that. there's a lot of them there actually..I have even watch some videos about Filipino Americans recording their own.* people still remembers their culture and language..but what about American Culture, Norms and stuff.. America or United States is a Place of different people, before it was all white.then black and white, then white, black, Asian, and Latino. It's more like a migrated country coming different people across the world. Huh? That's no Different from the Philippines, the difference is that the Islands were Empty before the migration of different Ancestors coming from lands of Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, Japan and China. Is it Loving for Freedom and Speech or being Patriotic to your country, or both?? Because just like the Philippines, America has a lot of CULTURES, but the difference is only with one language..ENGLISH (except in some states whee you can But the Question remains added. If America is no longer a Economically, Militarily and Influentially powerful, What is being an American for you? Would you Still Shout Freedom and Democracy?? I just can't Imagine the situation of United States and it's American people loosing influence through out the Globe. I am upset when ever some of my people thinking that Philippines should have been a US State. It's not because I don't want a good future for our country.Where the hell was their patriotism/nationalism at least. Americans did not wish to be a part of British again nor regret Independence when they are now suffering in their worst financial crisis and debt from the WARS they fought... there has to be something about the United States besides greenier pasture, english, power and culture..To What defines an American besides Freedom and Democracy?? Some People thought before generally US and Americans are "WEIRD" but Maybe they are not digging that much. weird because it's what define the culture when i saw it in wikipedia I guess i could say that US and it's people are likely "Doing the Impossible"? So, can they do the impossible of getting out of this debt??????????? *there was this discussion long ago i forgot the title, it's the usual about how to solve problems of US. I just open myself and said, stop expanding, recall all troops, close all us foreign bases.temporarily stop immigration, until all american citizens gets a job, then they can open up again, a lot were mad as hell..but some said i could been a president if that was my solution.meh! * who knows i could be wrong am no american. my relatives (A-citizens) are, but even they don't have a clue besides money, greener pasture and american dream.

dear LK, I admit I am one of those who wants our country to be under their regimen. It doesn't mean that I am losing my patriotic pledge as a FILIPINO citizen of this country. What I am saying is..."what if" we are still under their government, anyway let's not forget that we "owe" our freedom to US. (I would rather be under US governance than the Spaniards...well,what do you think?, or maybe Japanese?) What does it mean being an American, let's leave that to our American friends, they better know how to speak for themselves. One thing I am sure of my dear brother, our countrymen who lives in the US also can speak more what kind of life they have in there compared here in our country. And..do not forget that the call center fad owned by American company (in dominance) gives a big contribution to unemployment here in our country. Not to mention the benefits that our companies/private and government are not providing to their employees. Without the Americans we might still be suffering/under slavery from the past.

the only thing that i noticed to the American Kids that they cannot talk without using foul words... is it the words of common expression? it really hurts to feel especially if you are easily out of tempered... the original attitude of the kids living in Manila Philippines is whatever they say, it contains an element of "Po" and "Opo" a Tagalog Dialect.... me? i am into a Hiligaynon Dialect and sometimes, a Karay-a Dialect....

If he wants an honest opinion it's all about money. no one goes there simply because they want see Americans, it's all dollars and all.

true.... away from your family and husband or wife, but still they have the determination in order to receive true salary that will bring their family to a quality of life.... Caregivers and Domestic Helpers caring for the Foreigner's Child while their own Child in their home in the Philippines they can't even care of..... a lot of Seaman wants to go Overseas instead of Inter-Island..... and majority of them, their family life is great, but sad to say that the way they spent their money as LIABILITIES first rather than ASSETS... job wages here in the Philippines? it's below minimum.... not enough money for the family? not enough money for the child's education? Child Labor is the solution.... due to Child Labor, the foundation of the education of such students are water down... and passed from parents to child someday.... i am lucky enough because my relatives in Canada send me money in order to start for my mini Sari-Sari Store.... but i have no plans to go there abroad, because there in abroad, no such thing as Sari-Sari Store there, or the people will only neglect and laugh at you raising a Filipino style sari-sari store there in America or Canada.....

Hello bhaby, I have actually talked to my dad about it and he said the only that is good in the US was free food, and clothes. he told me that a lot of stuff out there is being given away either because it's a donation or simply because the food or beverage is about to expire. I have relatives too, but thanks to their contribution for the commercial business. but i don't wanna go there too, it's too late.

Why asked about being an American, when you can go to Canada, I thought Canada is more open to Filipinos now? maybe you should make a discussion about being a Canadian maybe some will answer you're questions.

Hello jean, the reason is that this discussion was all about being an american and it's meaning. and not entirely the financial aspect of it. Indeed some has answered my questions.

i think they revised their rules now, it is now hard to go to Canada to be an Immigrant even if you have a child working there in Canada as your Back-up.... and Canada is their stepping stone in order to go to the United States.... a lot of my friends, schoolmates, classmates before, my previous jobmates, relatives are all there now in Canada or in United States.... bad for me because i am still here in the Philippines Provinces, since i have no guts to myself.... and all of them, they are already sending money to their relatives here in the Philippines....

No foreigner can explain it, even americans are hard to explain. some said patriotism is brainwashing, then what is meant for freedom and speech? i could view as they don't have any idea either. for me, America is MOOONEY! and opportunity no matter how they are suffering financially they are still strong.

Hello Greedymoney Well, one thing for sure is that they Love their country and they are pretty determined to protect it. besides, their model of democracy is rarely seen in the other countries, it's just that they do want to spread the freedom as long as they can. yeah, it's a big nation and money is one reason why they go there.

how about Canada? i heard that in Canada, if you don't send you child in school, the government will file a case against you as a parent... but here in the Philippines, especially here in the Provinces, the parents send first their children to do "Child Labor" before going to school, child labor such as laboring in the rice field under the heat of the sun.... whenever the child enters the school, no such lesson get's into their mind because of hungry, stress, and overwork under the heat of the sun.... and passed this activity from father to son, or parent to child someday..... i am not sure if in America if you won't send your child to school, their government too will accuse you as a parent?

Hello Mantis, I do believe every single develop country does prosecute and imprison parents for not sending their children to school. that's what i hate about our country, parents from slums believe that having kids so many can help them grow, which is wrong. if they can't be sent to school then they utmostly sent to work.
