Character Creation

Hello to all the writers out there. When writing a story how do you go about creating your characters? Do you base them on people you know? Yourself? How you would like to be? Someone you wish existed? I write for fun and I find that i'm really trying to create a character that is just like myself, partly out of vanity of course. I think it is a great self-discovery exercise.

normally most of us write only what we have come across or what we have experienced. it has to be some person u have come across. Also fifty per cent out of imagination --it depends on one's age - teenagers will write on love, old people will write on philosophy - dharma etc.

When I write my story I envision it as a movie a lot of the time. I have been known to sit down and have a dialogue out loud, by myself. So when I create characters I usually base them on people I know or picture them as a celebrity. However, when I think of my current novel I am working on, I couldn't tell you who any of the characters "remind" me of. They are completely made up. I hope they're believable.

If I write a story then I am sure that the characters will match the personality of your own and with the people you know. The main character of your story will match to your personality up to great extent. The reason is this that you are one who is going to create the character so I think the character will have the same kind of mind like yours. What do you think about it?

well when I'm creating a character I first look around myself for some persons that may be the one I can fit in as the role my character would. Then I select the best out of them and start carving out the details about my character... And I have already used myself as a character in some of my stories so I don't feel using myself as character again and again so I try to make new characters with unique characteristics but still more realistic.
