Sometimes I Cannot Believe My Own Stupidity

Today was "Blind-Fitting Day" and a very nice man called Mike fitted the stripey blinds that even HE thinks are miles better than the bog-standard white ones he usually fits. It only took him about 20 minutes to do them in total. He gave me a quick demo to show me how to work them and he left me with the back blind up and the front blind down. I noticed that the cord was trailing on the floor (this is the blind that was up) and thought it was odd. To cut a long story short I CUT THE CORD SO IT WAS THE SAME LENGTH AS THE OTHER ONE, BEARING IN MIND THE OTHER BLIND WAS DOWN! You know what's coming right? If I try to pull the blind back down the cord isn't bloody well long enough. Why am I so STUPID? Who on earth is going to employ a Dingbat like ME? The lady at Carlisle Blinds tried getting back to me (as I'd left a message telling Moira that I was going to "cut the cord" myself) but she couldn't as she was so busy. In a way, it's a good job it was the blind at the back rather than the one at the front that I've vandalised. They look so awesome too. I will probably have to wait quite a while now to get the blind re-corded as the guy is going on holiday next week. It's doubtful he'll be able to come round here before he goes...and why should he? It's me who's made the c*ck-up, not him. Have you done anything like this, thinking you were doing the right thing, when in fact, you've only made matters worse?

Yeeeooowwwch!! I'd be embarrassed, too! :-p I remember when I first used computers, I asked a computer technician if a virus would make a computer blow up physically. Now THAT was a stupid question, but just to show how ignorant I was :-p Don't worry, sis, we all go through these times, gives a barrel full of good laughs for the future!

Nope! I am lol..but you're close AnupamArt! As for you Masihi..erm, a bit stupid but not as stupid as me! I know what you mean about all this providing a laugh for the future. The blind itself is fine so that's something I suppose. I don't make life easy for myself do I?

The first time I heard from a guy that the OS his computer crashed I could visualize it to the nth detail! It took me some months to know what it was! (Am I the winner???)

I only hope Carlisle Blinds don't charge John for re-cording the blind...when they get round to it. At the moment I feel like a hole should swallow me up. God knows what John thinks of me (I emailed him) as he must wonder if I'm "all there" lol. I wonder that myself.

Oh my goodness. I hate it got messed up like that. I'm sure I've probably done something crazy like that before. We learn from our mistakes right??? lol Hopefully he will be able to come soon and record it for you.

I don't learn from my mistakes because this very computer desk took longer than it should to be..er, erected by Yours Truly. Why? Because I put the internal shelf on the wrong way round, therefore I had to take the desk apart and start again!! This was a while ago but it's soldered onto my brain 'cos I thought I was doing sooo well at the time and felt like bursting into tears when I found out I wasn't!

It is amazing what people do when they are distracted, the best I can do is I was lifting the hem on a pair of trousers I had already cut one leg and went to answer the phone before I did the other, when I got back I cut the other leg, or so I thought. I ended up making them into shorts but that is one of my best hand/face moments. Hope it sorts itself out soon. PS If the cut is reasonably low down, doesn't go into the mechanism, can't you celotape each strip back, at least until it gets restrung.

Oh well, at least you can sew lol. Hubby is taller than me so he has adjusted the blind further so it's 3 quarters of the way down rather than half way. Anyway, it will get fixed..eventually.

This is the funniest story I've heard all day. Thanks SO much for sharing :-) I hope you get your blinds sorted soon though, it's a shame not to be able to use them properly when they look so good.

Well, I can see the funny side now lol (didn't at the time as you can imagine) and John has managed to adjust the cord so the blind covers more of the window as he's much taller than me. It's so frustrating as the other blind looks absolutely AWESOME!!

Janey I came back to your discussion twice today, so hoping I could take the prize from you, sadly I can't. Humm outside of though reading instructions I have screwed things in on the wrong side and causing them to be so tight I have hurt myself in the process trying to undo and redo. But outside of that I can't come up with anything I have damaged as cutting too short. Sorry Janey but you do get the prize, kidding aside, I do hope they can re rope it and your lovely new blinds will just how you wanted them. On the flips side of the sad moment, think about the repair guy coming over and holding a straight face when you explain. Don't be hard on yourself though as the blinds will be good as new soon.

Hi Janey.. Well wow! I have similar mishaps myself with various things. Can you not tie the string you cut off back on again. You could make a fancy bow so that it wouldn't look too bad. The problem that you may have though is that the knot wouldn't allow the blinds to be completely lowered. I have known myself in my DIY exploits to cut pieces of wood too small and then had to go chasing back to the DIY centre to get another! Such is life. _Derek

Hi Derek. I've just read John's email and it's soo sweet, telling me "these things happen." They certainly do..but only to me lol. I even rang Carlisle Blinds to ask if superglue could be used to glue the chopped off cord back on. Errr, no, was the answer. They must think I'm a lunatic!!

janey hi don't be so hard on yourself .we all do silly things at one time or another in our lives.i made a booboo like that and it was on samples of fancy blinds. we were supposed to cut these to fit the cardboard binders they would be placed in.the job was completely new to me and the scissors they gave me were not the best in the world and I tried to cut the blinds to fit th e covers bu t my hand slipped and I cut it too short. My next door neighbor worked there and was the supevisor and bawled the heck out of me. she was so rude I grabbed my purse and my jacket and said , mail me whatever I made as I quit right now and for your information those scissors will not even cut hot butter. adios. I can find a better job where I will be treated better too. I did too I went back to working in the hospital where people did not scream at me because of a blunder as I did not make blunder working with ill people. We again became friends after she was fired so she told me she really hated thejob as we were not given the right tools to work with she told me that she had not meant to yell at me like that but had just been fired herself. loll

Awww Hatley what an awful thing to happen. Nothing worse than duff scissors is there and blinds won't be easy things to cut...thankfully I didn't get that far..just the cord lol. That story reminds me of another really stupid thing I did in my first long-term job. I was only about 16 so definitely wet behind the ears. I was told to envelope up a load of letters and seal them. This I did, not realising that the envelopes were RE-SEALABLE..you know, the ones where you don't have to lick the glue to stick them. Anyhow, I noticed that the two edges of the envelope met but thought that I had to use SELLOTAPE in order to stick them together. Needless to say, I was moved to another department once they realised what I'd done. Sellotape everywhere lol. I was there for 6 and a half years though, which is some kind of record for me.

Yes that story reminds me of the time i assembled a wardrobe dairly unsuccessful actually not fairly, very unsuccessfully.I had put the wardrobe completely together apart from the back.So i lay it face down so i good attach the back the back was folded up and fairly bendy so it would fit into the box and reduce costs i suppose. So i nailed it to the back of the wardrobe but it overlapped in two corners so i trimmed the bits off so it would look better.I then lifted it to upright only to find out it was wonky and couldnt be straightened as now the back wouldnt fit if it was straight and without the back it just flopped from side to side.I have now fixed it i straightened it up and put a piece of board acroos the back it dosent look right but it works.

Oh dear! Furniture is great isn't it, only if you get someone else to deal with it lol. Upstairs I would like one of those sliderobes but there is absolutely no way you could let me loose on one of those. It was bad enough putting my media units together. I'm quite sure if I tried moving one (with all the media in it) it would fall apart. I cannot understand why the backs of such units are made of very thin board and at the front we have toughened glass. Doesn't make any sense does it?

There is no need for reproving yourself. One cann't know everything. You aren't in blinds line, small wonder you couldn't know blinds backwards like Mike who gave you demonstrate only took him 20 minutes.I am bad at it too.Sometimes I want to roll up the blind, I give a pull at the rope but It cann't move.It annoys me very much then I give it a more hard pull ,as a result, the rope is snapped.Cann't I make sure why the rope doesn't move?

They're delicate things aren't they, blinds? Last night the blind that covers the whole window because it's got all of its cord looked amazing when I shut it..has a shimmering effect which is exactly what I wanted. When someone comes to fix the other one that will look the same. Oh, how frustrating it is not having two looking identical but, as John said, it will get "sorted" so I'll just have to be patient.

I have never vandalized anything like that but I have done stupid things. When I was pregnant I could not stand the heat. One summer day it was very warm in my house so I decided to turn the air conditioner on. I waited a few minutes and it did not kick on so I adjusted the thermostat. Still nothing. I was getting so aggravated. I thought well it must be broke. My husband called me on his lunch break and I was telling him about it. I told him I keep turning the thermostat up and the air conditioner will not kick on. It must be broke. He started to laugh "which aggravated me" I ask him why he was laughing. Then he explained to me, to get it to kick on you have to turn it down. Boy did I feel stupid. Have a blessed day!

Surprises did not happen! Yet, I cannot declare you the winner, Janey. For I have done things may be more stupid than this. (Open to public opinion!!!) I remember, I have filled applications, at least 3 or 4, checking the 'daughter of' box while writing my father's name!!! And, it was in my childhood, I introduced myself as 'Miss...(My name)' in a school function!!! (Now, I never had any gender related complexities in my subconscious!) Your 'blinds' were 'fit' for this 'blind' stupidity, I must say though! Let's forget it, no? (I almost forgot my LIST!)
