I'm a fanatic...I have to have that first-aid kit all the time!

There's 2 incidences involving my daughter that made me carry a well-stocked first-aid kit all the time, biking, home, travel, anywhere. First incidence is when my daughter came out of a lake at a family reunion covered in leeches and I was lucky that I remembered to carry my first aid kit for the trip, and had enough bandages to take care of the bleeding spots, plus ointment. The 2nd incident is when my daughter fell out of a window severely cutting her arm here at home and I immediately put gauze on her arm and Hubby rushed her to Emergency. Especially after that incident, I went out and purchased extra gauze and other first aid materials and literally stuffed my kit full, along with instructional booklets on how to care for certain situations. My kids and I are all visually and hearing impaired and anything drastic can happen to us. I keep bugging Hubby to carry a smaller version of a first aid kit that I made up for him but he always leaves it home. Men!!!
I have lots of gauze, too many bandages of different sizes, heat pack, cold pack, extra painkillers, ointment, tweezers/scissors, tea tree oil, rash creams, alcohol swabs, latex gloves (several pairs) hand sanitiser, hand wipes, extra sanitary napkins, extra pads for different purposes, cash, neatly folded up bags, everyday meds like benedryl and cough drops, and hearing aid batteries/tester. Yep, too much, but I guess I'm paranoid. I go through my kit every six months to keep all the meds up to date.
Sounds kinda strange, but well...better safe than sorry.

Nope not strange at all, shows you are a very caring and protective mommy. I too use to carry them all the time with both of my kids as scrapes and scratches were a routine thing just about anywhere we went and with my son into sports since little league it was inevitable to always have boo boos. lol
Now my boyfriend and I both play on a softball team for 8 years and well, let's say he is the boo boo creator all the time. Plus we also have our little one coming from England to us every end of July for a month and we take her over to Arkansas and all the outdoor activities we do, I usually carry them in the car too as want to make sure she is tended if any scratches, as would not want her England visits to stop. lol I am all for safe then sorry too.

So I guess you're pretty well-trained in the first aid dept, then
I'm also considering converting my first aid kit into a survival kit as well, as we're going camping this summer a few times, and it's good to have an all-in-one kit :-) Hubby does have a survival kit in his van with matches, emergency blanket, and a regular blanket.

Note to self double check on the survival kit as the long 15 hour drive can be brutal and not being prepared, yikes. Thanks Masihi, it is now on my to do list as that area I am falling a bit short, i have a few things but not all I should in the truck.
Always glad I respond to discussions here as something to learn and or remember.

I do have a first aid kit at home but have so far not carried it with me as you have done. Considering that it is a possibility that accidents do happen it is wise to carry a small kit along. You are doing the right thing and I do not find anything fanatic about it.

My husband is the same way, he doesn't feel the need to carry one in his backpack going to work, which he should since his work requires a first aid course every 2 years. I made him a small kit that'll fit very easily in his backpack, and is nowhere near as heavy as mine is.

Personally, there is nothing wrong with having to have a Full stocked First Aid kit with you all the time. It actually can end up saving a lot of people a lot of $$ for emergency room and doctor visits due to not being able to take care of the cut, etc. right away. One thing I am learning with all the problems I have had with this Chronic wounds is that from now on I will keep stocked up in advance when I can just for occassions where I might need something to try and be safe for sure.

Hehe, I"m sure glad I'm not the only crazy lunatic that runs around with a heavy, overstuffed first aid kit in my backpack!

There is nothing wrong with this. I think that as a mom we have to be prepared for anything that comes at us with our kids. I know that I always have first aid items with me when we leave home. I have one that I can keep in the car.

I'm hesitant to keep items like that in our van because of heat and cold conditions, especially with medicines and other stuff that can freeze/melt.

that is normal masihi! plus it is nice that you care for them and as a parent it is a responsibility. I am like that too, though i do not carry it along with me, i have stuffed it at home..my kids nebules for their asthma, medicines, bandages and ointments and stuff. it is better that you have it on hand rather than worry at the time when you need them.

I have a backpack that I carry with me all the time instead of a purse, so there's my first aid kit and my purse items plus snack food, my husband is so spontaneous, you never know when he's gonna have a hankering for a great big long walk after a church service or something like that LOL

That's real funny and not necessary. But you impressed us here, only few people do like that. Well, keep it up. And I guess, it will do you more good than harm. Great!

What scared me is the number of leeches that latched on to my daughter when she was swimming at a cottage owner's lake (family reunion) and then a few months later she fell through a window, cutting her arm (picture of the scar is below).

I wouldn't call that paranoid at all. I would call it prepared!! I love to have a fully stocked first-aid kit. Actually 3, one for the house, one for the car,and one for the cats. I do like to put my own together, I have compiled it out of about 3 or 4 small ones. Sometimes I see new ones on sale at the store, and buy one in case there may be something in it I don't have, or if it has some things I need for re-stocking, and it may be cheaper than buying individual items. I just love organizing my first-aid kits!

Ya, it can be cheaper that way, because I think nowadays places seem to freakin' overcharge on a very basic kit, yet people are willing to fork out the money "to save their lives" type thing.
