Transporting A Car

I have an automobile that I haven't used in years. It isn't running and in order to get it on the road again, it will needs a lot of TLC. There is this great mechanic that I know, who is willing to work on it, but the problem is he is located in another state and both of us realize that the work needed on my car will involve quite a bit of time...so him coming to me, isn't an option. Currently, where I am living there are loads of mechanics, but I know they are going to charge me 'Big Time!' Also, shipping my auto to another state would probably cost as much as the repairs. Does anyone have an frugal and creative alternative that would lower the price tag on transporting my vehicle?

How about planning a "Push-my-car-to-the-next-State-a-thon" whereby you rope unwitting locals into pushing the car all the way to the mechanic's place and collect sponsorships for charity?

Talk about 'thinking outside of the box' ... for sure you got my vote. However, my mechanic is about 5 states away from me ... the 'unwitting locals' might get wise to my plot ...

Or it could turn into a major media event if you do it for charity. Imagine the TV coverage for pushing a car across 5 states! Awesome! You'll be like Forrest Gump. Or not.
