Happy Birthday to South Sudan

Sudan has a long history of conflict, tension, and poverty among other things. Today, we welcome the birth of the newest nation on earth: South Sudan. Happy Birthday. May your citizens finally know peace and live well with its neighbors. South Sudan will be having a rough go from what I read. They had a rough go when they were part of Sudan and they will continue to have one as an independent nation. I hope the people of South Sudan will now be free to practice their religion and live peacefully. I hope their leaders will do right by them. And I hope that Sudan will now be able to focus more on other things besides tension and warfare giving their citizens a better and more peaceful life.

Yes! I wish the new African nation of South Sudan the best! I watched the swearing of South Sudan's first president Salva Kirr; the man appeared poised. By the way, do you understand the significance of Kirr's cowboy hat?

Where did you watch the wearing of Salvi Kirr? I have been out all day. I am going to try to research and see if I can get something on line. He wore a cowboy hat. Very interesting. Would that have anything to do with former President George W. Bush? I thought that i read something on line about former President Bush being very support of South Sudan breaking away and becoming independent of Sudan. But I could be wrong.

Bostonphil, Salva Kiir (not Kirr) is South Sudan first president. The man seems to always be wearing a cowboy hat, and I was just wondering what the significance of his constant hat wearing is.

Thanks for the post, I hadn't heard about this until now. Although it won't be easy, I hope this country will prosper and be an example to what all the countries in Africa can become: peaceful, democratic, and economically strong. Only time will tell if they can do so, but I believe they stand a good chance.

I do not think that it is going to be easy for either Sudan or South Sudan. The people in these countries have had such a rough time. And they deserve so much better. The whole continent of Africa has had such a rough history. I have never been but just from my reading, watching and meeting people from Africa, it is a continent full of beauty and riches. And the people of these lands deserve so much better than what they have received from both outsiders as well as their own. Yes, it was just yesterday or the day before that I heard about the birth of the newest nation in the world -- South Sudan. I searched South Sudan using the mylot search engine and was surprised that no one had begun a discussions. So, I did. Thank you for responding.
