In the garden there are little green tomatoes, they are late this year because we have had a very cool Spring and Summer, in fact I've had blossoms for some time but just three days ago thos beautiful green orbs showed up. You can believe that I will look oer them with tender, loving care.

I thought tomatoes had to be started at a certain time to sprout. Enlighten me. I love tomatoes and would much rather grow them than have to keep buying them at the market. They have gotten so expensive. I see tomato plants that others have attempted to start and they all seem to die rather quickly. What is your secret?

Tomatoes are not hard to grow, they take regular water and love heat. If you are not someone who has grown things for a while I would start with summer squash first, it's easy and produces well. Tomatoes need to be fed regulary and watch for desease and pests, they also need to be staked, if left on the ground the fruit will rot quickly.

Fresh home grown tomatoes sure are good. Vine ripe is the best. We also enjoy the green ones fried. It's hard to get good ones in the supermarket.

I don't care for tomatoes except in sauces but my dad is really looking forward to his. He has little green orbs, too, and they are growing quickly! He has Early Girl and my stepmom has grape tomatoes that she likes in salads. They are both really looking forward to tomatoes! They told me they loved stewed tomatoes like their moms used to make it--cut up and cook tomatoes with torn up bread, some sugar and some salt. Sounds awful to me but they both were practically salivating. Since it's best fresh I can't make it and take it to them but I have a feeling my stepmom will be making some this summer!

Thats really wonderful! I just started a veggie garden at home this year and it was the most rewarding feeling EVER being able to pick wonderful ripe, red tomatoes from the plant and let me tell you - they were the most delicious tomatoes I have ever tasted! Hopefully you will have the same result :)
