Is Amalgam dental filling still safe to use nowadays?

Hi, I'm a mother of two children. I've been researching about Amalgam dental filling, since recently I've known of somebody who had his tooth filled and the dentist used the Amalgam filling. I am concern if the said filling is still safe to use. I need opinion regarding this. I kept asking the dentist if it is necessary to use that kind of filling and he said this it is more durable and strong than the other kind of filling.
