The name Kolkata (formarly calcutta)was given by Job Charnock,an administrator of the English East India Company. It is regarded as a metropolition city in India. If someone visits the city, he /she will easily find the main features of the city. One of such feature is it's UNITY IN DIVERSITY. India have different languages in different states. Not only the language differs, but also you will found different food habits, different cultures, different traditions, different costume etc. But if someone visits in Kolkata he/she will see people from different parts of the country. Most of them choose this city for their profession, friendly atmosphere, low cost of living. So Kolkata is the city of merry go round for the visiters, where you can taste all the flavours of life

yes. I was in Kolkata in 1973-75-78 for reasons of work. It is a nice place. people are very good. you get a lot of sweets. Sweets were very cheap in those days. only 4 annas per rosagolla. singada was 4 annas. Now it will cost Rs.10. Kalighat temple, Belur temple are places to visit. Mekala Theatre in southern avenue was a place I use to visit every sunday morning. I am not sure whether that theatre is still there or not? If u r from kolkata please tell me about that.

Being a Bengali as well as a citizen of Calcutta, I may be biased for it. But the most important thing about the city of Calcutta is that it is full of life, People have a helping attitude for others, they always extend a warm reception to the outsiders. So in spite of all its drawbacks, it is loved by everyone who has ever come in contact with this great city, which is always a 'city of joy'. It may be a city of poverty with bad roads, traffic jam but it is a city of culture, it is the city which is associated with the lives of all the Nobel winners from the country. So it may be treated as a mini-India.
