There is a simple test by rubbing the gold in cosmetics, if it turns black, then there is likely to contain mercury, to check in the lab. Should be in hospital laboratories, or medical laboratories could check ups. Because medical check ups can know the content of mercury in the blood, especially for cosmetics, should be much easier.

Mercury, arsenic, lead and many other highly poisonous compounds all USED to be used in cosmetics but are now banned in many countries.
One of the uses of mercury is in mascara. The same compound used to be used in the manufacture of hats and, since mercury poisoning leads to nerve damage and symptoms of 'madness', this is probably the reason that the Hatter in Alice in Wonderland was called the 'Mad Hatter'.
