Isn't it a little early for Halloween????

I went shopping at one of the national multi-purpose discount retail stores in our area last weekend, and the salespeople were already putting out Halloween costumes, masks, and decorations. It is only the middle of July, and Halloween is October 31. I know stores have begun to put out back-to-school clothing and supplies, and the sales have already started for back-to-school stuff. But don't you think it's a little early to be displaying Halloween stuff? At this rate, the Christmas trees will be up by August! Don't get me wrong, I love Halloween, but I really think it is too early to be pushing Halloween merchandise, with the exception of crafts and homemade project kits and such. What are your thoughts?

We are suffering too here on the East Coast--broke all heat records on Friday! And I have seen winter clothes popping up here too. I feel sorry for the people who have to unload that stuff and put it on the racks/shelves/. No air conditioning is strong enough to cool you down if your surrounded by winter coats this week.!

I worked for a dollar general a few years ago and we had overstock in the back from Christmas and halloween. We never put any of it out that I can remember though, not until close enough to the season anyway. It does seem like they are pushing it a bit, I mean I can understand halloween stuff in September, but it's only July. Maybe they just had overstock and were instructed to get it out on the floors.

That makes a lot of sense, but doesn't that have a domino effect--hurting sales in September and October? I've never worked that kind of retail, so I'm not really sure.

Well, I don't know that reason why they're displaying those, but perhaps they've gotten a lot of questions as to when they'll start selling Halloween costumes that they'd rather just sell it any time of the year than to have to explain things to each customer.
I don't really mind though.
Have a great MyLot experience ahead!

I think, as some people below suggested, they are either trying to get rid of overstock or are trying to bolster sales. But, to me, it makes Halloween less special--especially for kids--if they feel like it is a 3-month shopping experience, rather than a fun holiday in late October!

Well, to be honest, for those of us who like to plan parties and do things during these pagan occasions, it's good that the opportunity for that has been afforded by putting things in the store early. I like to buy at the end of a season though and save for the coming year. Things are much cheaper and hey, nobody remembers that skull head dec from last year if you put a little creation on it, LOL. To me it doesn't matter. It can be a good thing for the patrons. I use to think the same way, but it's going to go on one way or another. May as well be ready!

Oh, I love Halloween parties, and have one at my house every year. And my kids and I have all sorts of "Halloween" decorations out all year round. But I'm not sure I need to start planning for a Halloween party in June or July. . . lol. My main complaint about rushing to put out store merchandise so early--for ANY holiday--is it takes some of the magic out of each holiday--each has a season and a time of year associated with it, and if they all just blend together, then none seem as special. At least that's my take on it!

Actually, that kind of thing has happened already--my son broke his swimming goggles last week and I can't find any left in stock to replace them with. And it's still July--6 weeks of swimming left!

hi suzieqmom yes I think July is too early for Halloween stuff and masks and costumes. let enjoy summer first before starting on fall holidays. next they will start selling thanksgiving foods and decorations along with the Halloween stuff. Its the stores wanting to make some extra money before the holidays are anywhere near coming
lol lol lol.

Around here, we don't even really get to see many Thanksgiving decorations anymore--the stores go straight from Halloween to Christmas. At this rate, you are right--turkeys will be on sale in September, and none will be available in November!

well that depends doesn't it.
Halloween does coincide with the Pagan festival of Samhain (Sowen, not Sam-Hain) which marks the end of the agricultural year. the last harvest. there is the harvest of grains, the harvest of fruits, and then the harvest of meat, when animals would be chosen to be kept through a hard winter, and others slaughtered and their meat preserved to keep people going through the winter. those parts of meat that can't easily be preserved meant that this was a feast day. although this is rarely the case now that food is easily availiable year round for many people, and there is animal feed enough to keep a whole herd over winter. at this time, Pagans also honour their ancestors who have passed. it's my favourite of the festivals of the year, actually.
and for many Christians, it's the eve of all saints day. so sacred to them in their own way too.

Well said, Galena.
To ebuscat--then the store practice of putting out Halloween decorations so early must be especially annoying.

That is too soon. I know that a friend of mine has bought some items for Christmas, but that is because she makes multiple blankets and stuffed bears for children who are in the hopsital with terminal illnesses. I can understand why she has bought things already because these blankets do take a while to make and so do the bears.
These stores are really pushing hard to get things sold because they know that the recession is bad and that people are budgeting for Christmas earlier this year to beat the rush. I know I will create my Christmas budget next month. I also make a list of what I want to buy for other people so I can look for the best deals

I think crafting stores are right to have Halloween, autumn, and Christmas crafts out already, because they do take some time to make. But even the crafting stores haven't put out as much holiday stuff as some of these retail clothing stores!

Maybe those stores are putting them up already on still cheap prices, so the people would be enticed to shop early. That's the usual style of items for sale. They are cheaper when the occasion is still months to be celebrated.
Christmas selling is the same too. By September they will be putting up Christmas items already, for a cheap price. But then, people have no budget for that yet, because bonus is still far from Septmber.

All true. Sometimes I think stores don't really factor in practical realities such as bonus season and such. Maybe that's why retail is hurting so much.

Oh my gosh, I agree with you! It's only July for heaven's sake. I think they shouldn't need to promote Halloween until fall. It doesn't hurt anything, but it's annoying. I hope they're still selling things people can use "now" during the summer.
I wonder if people really do buy Halloween things now.

I guess people who want to make sure their kid gets the "in" costume this year would buy now. But I am pretty sure this is still last year's stock, so that probably wouldn't work anyway! Everything is so rush-rush-rush--and it is annoying.

maybe the shop is into a yearly inventory and are trying to sell out old stuff. u shouldve checked out the price of the merchandise though.i know its still early but there's a big chance they will be selling at a low price. it could be a good chance to check and buy if u need something for the holloween. i do the same thing. every now
and then i check on shops for out of season merchandise. i save a lot by doing so. especially on winter stuff, most of the time shops sell out winter stuff earlier to open up for new stocks... i feel good when i save on my shopping, it wont matter if its early or not the season yet. i give importance on the value i get in exchange of he money i give.

You are right, the prices probably are a lot cheaper now, but I already have a TON of Halloween decorations, and I don't expect my kids to know what they want to be for Halloween now! Plus, my kids usually change their minds 3-4 times every year anyway, so any costume I bought now would probably be passe by October!

Congratulations!
And you should have no trouble finding a "baby's first Halloween" outfit and bib--I'm sure they are putting them on shelves--and in online stores--already!

Hi, Suzieqmom. Yes, I think that it is too early to put out Halloween items. It is only July, and Halloween isn't until October. I think that putting the Halloween items out in October, is so much more better. I have heard that Christmas trees are already out now in some cities. I have heard about this in August. I guess the stores feel like having Halloween costumes out this early, will give customers time to shop and buy early, thus making them extreme profits too.

I love Halloween and I start planning how I'm going to decorate the house around July so that I then have enough time to seek out any new decorations etc that I need.
Another reason why the store maybe stocking the products now is because it also falls into the catergory of fancy dress and parties, not just Halloween.
