Dad is living on his own in a 2 story house since mom died 5 yrs ago. He's very active for his 85 yrs old. He's still working at the Golf Course as a Starter and he's always out with his brothers and sisters. Yes he's still driving also.
Last week, was laughing as he told me that he left the house to go to work and his good friend called him on his cell to let him know that he was calling him from his home phone as he left his door unlocked!!
Dad thought that was funny and thats probably why he told me because he knows Im always telling him to be careful about this and that. I didnt act crazy when he said that. I simply said that he was lucky his good friend was there and noticed the door was unlocked.
So now when I call him at night before he goes to bed, the last thing I say is "make sure your doors are locked dad ok? He keeps telling me that yeah yeah, they are, stop worrying.
Ive been trying to find a kind of lock that would stay locked all the time but Im not sure if its a good idea. What if he steps out to sit on his patio and forgets his keys inside? Is there a way I could make sure that he remembers to lock his doors ALL the time, not only when he's leaving? He keeps his doors unlocked when he's at home......I dont think its safe.
Would you know of a way to make him remember to lock his doors?

Oooh that is a GREAT idea!!!! Yes, Ive heard of those and it doesnt matter how much it costs, his life is more important than money. We're 4 kids, so we can all get together on this. Good thing that more than one thumb print can be used in case something happens to him and we all live at about 45 mins from him, but his friend lives close by.
What a good idea, thanks for the suggestion!!!

The problem is that if we have to go home, then we'll all need to remember the combination. Same for his friends. I know the thumb print is more expensive, but theres 4 of us to pay for it, so it shouldnt be too bad. Also, one of my brother is doing well, so we'll make his share double

oh that's quite expensive Pat, a good alternative but serves the same purpose is the keypad combination lock type, about a fifth the price of the biometrics type lock, the down side is if he forgets the combination but this can easily remedied by writing it in paper and putting in your wallet.

hello, maybe you could just get that lock that stays locked all the time but leave a duplicate key to a trusted neighbor if you have one.
Another good alternative is to install a door puller so the door keeps shut all the time (eliminates the problem of him leaving the door open)and install a small and cheap contact door alarm that triggers when somebody tries to open the door, would scare off any potential intruder even if he forgets to lock the door. Good luck to you and your dad

I suggest you post a reminder outside and inside the door near the door knob or key hole like a little signage that says "locked me" (hehehe) or simply "keep this door closed always"
(hope it works)

It might be something worth trying. I'll try to make some kind of noisy thing that will sort of get in the way when he tries to close his door so that it reminds him to lock it. We did have "post-it" before but he took them all down. He doesnt want to admit he's 85 yrs old.....thats the problem!!
Thanks, we'll try that!
