Why is it always about money?

Seems like all I hear anymore is whether or not to tax the rich, we don't need to spend money on this or that, spending cuts, the deficit, national debt, all about money. Then comes some line about being responsible and taking care of yourself. Let me probably not be the first to say, that all this mess is because people didn't want to take care of themselves or their communities. We have all these economic problems because people couldn't take care of day to day life themselves and instead wanted the government to do it for them. We wanted the government to do this or we wanted to them to do that, we weren't willing to make even the smallest sacrifice to get it done ourselves. Can't raise your kids, why bother. We'll just make an FCC to control the television, turn public education into mandatory daycare. The education system isn't failing, parents are failing to teach their kids anything. Can't keep your kids off drugs or worried about junkies in your neighborhood, we'll have a war on drugs and jails for all the users. Can't be civil about anything to anyone, we'll hire more police for that. Don't want to donate time or money for something you care about, why not make it government funded? Can't save for your own retirement, there's a bureaucracy for that too. Don't like how another country is run, we'll send the military over to democratize them. Regulations everywhere for every inch of every industry, permits, licenses, on and on because we couldn't take any effort to do anything for ourselves. All these little things we could do ourselves; but can't be bothered because the government can make an agency to do them for us. All these things we wanted because we couldn't change the channel are costing a fortune, and yet we still want more for free because we don't want to be taxed on it. So before you ask for more regulation, more help, more laws that someone has to enforce, more of anything other than accountability. Ask if you could do more for yourself first. Maybe before we ask the government to be accountable, we should ask each other to accountable. We expect the government to take care of everything then hold them accountable when they don't. Well look in the mirror, were you accountable when you had a good job and spent every penny you earned, when you didn't read to your kids, when you didn't save for retirement, when you took everything at face value when there was obviously more, when you were more worried about what someone did in their bedroom than in public office? Were you accountable when you asked the government to do something you could have done yourself? Maybe when we take responsibility for our own lives and communities we can expect the government to be responsible for its duties instead of the ones we chose to put off on it.

Fact is that money speaks and some people believe if they can limit your access to money, then they can control your life. I, too, wish we each would manage our personal affairs and be free to live our lives. If only government would get out of our hair or let go of our toes!

When the early settlers came to this country they all worked hard and some were successful and others were not. If you cleared land to build a house and barn your neighbors would come and help with a "Barn Raising" and your barn was built and you were expected to help out your neighbors. When you needed something you traded something you had for something they had. the value was determined by the two parties and their wants and needs. native Americans did not have metal knives or axes but had lots of furs. The settlers could get knives and axes at a cheep price trade for the furs, which were worth more in Europe than the knives or axes. Did the White man cheat the Native because he traded a $5 knife for a fur that was worth $25 in Europe? No because both sides got something of value for something that had little value to them. We need to be more like the settlers and do for ourselves and depend less on the government.

well, in this century, people need to appreciated, with money of course. but not all can be valued with money, but with something else like honor or pride. i think people now forget with that.

I think you're right, people used to take pride in their work. We used to take pride in American goods because we tried to make superior quality items. It went from "they don't make em like they used to" to they don't even make them any more. Of course part of that comes from people wanting to pay less even if it's for an inferior good.
