My dog hates the Vet

I have had dogs that love the Vet no matter what happens to them. But Sadie hound hates the Vet, we have to drag her in and she shakes the whole time she is there. Even when nothing bad, like needles, happens to her. Our Vet is a very busy office they have 8 Vets and handle over 250 files per day, so I hate to take this poor shivering dog in. If she didn't look so healthy people might think we beat her or something. 10 mins. after we left the office it was just like nothing had happened. I guess Dogs really can live in the NOW

Did your dog get some disease and went to the Vets to be put on a drip or something else in his childhood? My dog Dudu hates the Vet, either. When he saw a vet, he became so irritable that the vet even can't touch him. Maybe he recalled the bad experience in the vet office when he is a puppy. I am having no idea about it untill now. I think I can't solve this problem, and I'm worrying how can my dudu do when he is old, at that time if he is ill, he must to go to the Vet.

Sadie was a rescue dog so we don't know what happened to her before we got her.

My dog was the same. We could not bring her not even for a walk besdie the vet's office (that was beside our house). She would run away - a big dog, much power. When vet time was comming, we were always all the family around , reassuring her that's ok, and still having to drag her as she would not go. But once in his office, she would stay calm until her turn would come. Then again, started to behave badly and even bite him. So, I was told to give har something to calm her down, but for the next time we had to give her away because she was too much for us to handle, so I don't know how she made it with the new owner to see the vet.

Gus, who cowers at loud noises and thunder, loves the vet! Yet Cookie, who is always happy and nothing bothers her, is so frightened at the vet that she slobbers all over the place and shakes. I'm wondering if Sadie and Cookie feel the misery of dogs that have been there injured or sick. Because the vet loves animals and they must feel that, but other residual feelings of past patients perhaps overwhelm them..or is it the tension in the place from owners who are so afraid for their beloved pets?

Your Sadie hound feels him in sound health. The hound thinks the vet unnecessarily disturbing her.

Shame, your poor dog! My dogs also absolutely hate the vet - I think its something to do with the smell in there! They hate that super clean disinfectant smell. Also, I guess it must bring back bad memories for the dogs of times when they were sick, or had to get injections or something. I think its a good thing they can live in the now - means that they can really get over anything traumatic that happens to them!

My husky is like that too. But mine had trauma from the first time we took him to the vet. The first time we took her to the vetm the vet made the injection cause pain on him and he cant forget that anymore. Everytime we go to that vet, he trembles like your dog and we cant do anything about it either. But you know what, when we changed our vet, he was totally different and wasnt shakingat all. We have a new vet now and our dog love him better I think.

I've had a couple of dogs that were the same way. My old big dog Ka'vik used to sit calmly in the waiting area and then when we got up to walk to the exam room his claws would be scrabbling on the floor trying to find purchase to drag me out the front door. He knew which was the good door and which was the bad door. I don't know why he was so afraid he didn't have anything traumatic happen there. My other girl Tesla never really liked the vet's office either.. but then we had to muzzle her when there.. She was really bad when it came time to cut her nails! And she was fine as soon as we got out the door too. You couldn't even tell that she had worked herself into such a frenzy only minutes before.

It’s funny how some animals deal with the same thing differently. My dog Cassie loves the vet; I mean she really loves going there! She gets so excited whenever we go with tail wagging and happy eyes. I swear she looks as though she is smiling lol! The vet and the nurses love her, they say that she is one of the happiest they have ever seen! She is 14 and still behaves like a puppy! Poor Sadie, I hope she doesn’t have to have too many check ups!

Awww poor Sadie. My dog Miky knows exactly how she feels. He's the same. If we mention that we have an appointment with the Doctor....he will look at us and he knows what it means. We get to the vet and he's shaking and will sit on my feet. Then when the vet comes out of his office, he usually gets up, his tail wagging and happy to see him. But he doesnt want to go in at first. He wont take the treats the vet gives him either.....he'll take them and spit it out haha!! The vet says he cant be bought. If hubby goes alone with Miky to the vet, when they come home, Miky will come close to me and he'll want me to say he was a good dog and then I'll give him a treat, so he seems to remember things but can forget until the next time I guess Sadie and Miky will always be afraid, we can only try to be there and reassure them as best we can.

Mine does too. He always has, ever since he met the vet the first time. I think it is because he has one of these huge, slippery tables, and it smells weird. But I am not really sure. I haven't managed to do anything about it yet though, so I can't really give any advice, I am afraid.

hi Pat, I think pets are no different from people, that is they have different personality types, it just happens that Sadie hates vets the same way some people do not like to have a check up, have a nice day friend
