What's The Saddest Thing You've Ever Seen?

My sad moments tend to revolve around animals as (thankfully) my Mum and Dad are still alive and well. Besides the usual...having cats put down (always a traumatic experience and something not to be taken lightly) I guess one of the saddest things I ever saw involved three monkeys at Monkey World (link to their site below) as they were new residents of theirs, way back in August 2003. http://www.monkeyworld.org/ What was sad about them? Well, all three had been experimented on in British Labs and were "surplus to requirements." In other words, they were too old to be experimented on. Monkey World were contacted and they agreed to take them into their care. They're the monkeys with the pink faces (forgive me as I can't remember what they were..Macaques I think) and on the glass front of their pen, where people were staring at them, was a description of the monkeys and how old they were, etc. As I was reading the description I noticed that all 3 of the monkeys were TERRIFIED of humans and cowered in corners. I shall never forget the expression of one of them in particular as its eyes were so full of sadness..like mine were, as tears were streaming down my face at that point. I told Mum I could no longer cope and moved away from the enclosure. Everyone else wasn't bothered about how sad the monkeys looked at all. I must stress that - as far as I know all 3 eventually settled in and managed to explore the bigger part of their enclosure but I can't help thinking..what on earth did humans do to these poor monkeys..and others like them that weren't so "lucky" in being offered a caring place to live out their lives? Please bear in mind this isn't a discussion about animal experiments. It is a discussion about seeing something (could be anything) that made you sad. How did you react? Did it form a lasting impression on you?

One thing that has always stuck with me was an indecent that happened when I was really young, probably around 5 or 6, maybe even younger. I just remember being in the car with my mom and her friends, it was late and we were driving home. All of the sudden I heard something hit the car. My mom and her friends started yelling at the guy driving and eventually he stopped and went back to see what it was. It ended up being a Golden Retriever. I guess the guy was drunk or something...he hit the dog so hard that almost all the fur on its left side was scraped off. My mom didn't want me to see as they tried to help the dog so I just stayed in the car. That's all I remember but I'll never forget the way that poor dog looked. I don't even know if it survived or not. So sad :(

Golden Retrievers are one of my favourite breed of dog. I've never owned dogs myself but I find that breed in particular so loving and gentle. I don't know what I'd do I witnessed ANY dog getting run over, to be honest. Must be a traumatic experience for all those concerned, especially the dog.

Me again, Although I have seen People cry a lot I could not help but be deeply moved by a Lady that was being comforted almost outside the Hospital Door the Main Doors that is. She was unconsolable and was being supported by another Woman. Now I have never ever seen this kind of thing before and she was in such a state of grief but she was not crying out loud she was just holding on to the other Woman for dear life itself. I have seen People cry but it has never moved me as much as this Woman did. I cannot begin to imagine what had happened it must have been something terrible though. It was a heart wrenching scene. Another one that did move me to tears was when the Woman next Door to us jumped through the Window and killed herself. I met them downstairs and they were all crying so badly I could not help but me moved by their tears. We were there when it happened and it was a very sad thing to happen. People like that should have Bars on their Windows for their own safety.

Hiya Janey, Stricken by grief is how I would describe her as well you know. I have never forgotten her there on the ground hardly able to sit up and being comforted by the other Lady that was there. She did not cry loud or anything just cried silent tears I found it very moving and I was almost crying myself at the time. Its true we never know how we will react to something really bad its hidden in our human makeup I suppose.xxx

Stricken by grief that woman was. I cannot imagine what moved her to cry like that but I suppose we don't know how we would react if we were confronted by something terrible.

Two things spring to mind. The public hanging of a 16 year old girl in Iran. Her crime was to have had an affair with an older man - although any man would have done in their eyes. The other one happens every time that I see the coffin of a British service man or woman brought off an aircraft from Afghanistan. The pointless waste of a young life in a pointless war.

Couldn't agree more. Wars in general sicken me to the core and when this Libya thing started I thought, "Here we go again!" Why doesn't it just STOP? I'm fed up of it.

I can understand how you felt. I would have felt the same. My saddest thing was mom when she had just come out of surgery and seeing her in the hospital bed with all the tubes.....It still makes me cry.

How pitiful the monkeys were! The reason Why they were terrified of humans and cowered was that they known from experience that human could hurt them. As you have known,my thoughts go out to the wild animals all the time, particularly when they are being harmed .Without saying,It must rule out harmful animals, for example, wild boar .With improvement of the ecological environment, the head of wild boar is increasing here in recent years, they destroy the cropes even attack people.

Can you explain what "Too far gone you see to be helped "means?

The saddest thing I have seen is when I had an afternoon walk and I saw an infant carried by a teen-age father resting on the street, with a dirty clothes and just feed with water.I walked a few meters and saw a blind old woman begging on the streets alone. It's just such a sad sight that makes me depress the whole day.Why our government could not help to end the poverty and suffering of these people and yet they are spending billions on luxurious coffee and trips.

That's so sad. It's not the first time someone from your country has mentioned this kind of thing...especially when poverty can be eradicated if the government saw fit to do so.

Just like you I am very sensitive to the suffering of animals Janey. It always surprises me when I see others that seem so indifferent to it. It's probably because I have grown up surrounded by animals. We always had a dog and a cat at least. Then one of our dogs some pups and one was the runt of the litter, quite ugly and nobody wanted him, so he too became part of the family. We also bred ponies at one time as I rode a lot from a young age and then leared how to school the new ones for children's riding ponies. Nowadays I hear of breeders breeding them for their meat, and that really feels sad to me, because I identify them as being characters and companions. _Derek

Hiya Janey, Have seen lots of sad things yes. A certain Man who keeps Horses for his work went back to their Van while he was with them and found that they had been the victims of an acid attack. I was so moved by the cruelty of this act as the Horses had nothing to do with anything or anyone none of it was their fault. He really tried to save them about three of them survived but they no longer work with him as such because of the terrible scars on them all over. He had about nine Horses with him so you can imagine the spectacle of it all. In real life I once went down the Road to the Vet who supplied Food for my Parrot I had then. She showed me a very young Puppy that had been thrown into one of those deep containers on a very hot Day and its Paw had been very badly burned on the bottom of the pads you know the underneath of the paws. That moved me deeply I cannot think what makes People do this kind of thing. Another time was when we were going through Madrid at Night very late and there were three or maybe four very young Bassett Hound Puppies wandering the Motorway. Now there was just no way they could have got there themselves because of the very high embankments. It upset me for most of the Journey because there was just no way we could stop without causing an accident. We managed not to hit them but you can imagine that most would not see them and just run into them before they even realized what was happening. If they donĀ“t want Dogs what on earth do they do that for? Such beautiful Puppies I wanted to call the Police but you know I did not know which Police to call as you can get fined now for calling them for nothing. It was very obvious that someone had opened their Car Door and just left them there as they were completely lost as to where they were. They could at least have given them a chance and left them somewhere else. Your story about the Monkeys is very sad as well. xxx

That's just awful, it really is. I cannot understand why anyone would do such a thing..it's beyond cruel isn't it? Something similar happened over here with cats. They were left on a country road, still in their basket. They got out of the basket but their owners had driven away, leaving them behind. When they were found they were still stood by their basket, thinking their owners were coming back for them. I hadn't witnessed this incident, it was a report on the television (some animal rescue programme) but I often think if there were children in the back of the car. What would they think of their parents, leaving cats behind like that? How is it explained to them? Even Mum's cats had been left in a shed to fend for themselves whilst the owners moved away. If they can't look after them, bloody well knock on doors and find someone who can..or ring up the RSPCA, that's what they're there for!

For me the saddest thing I have ever seen is also related to animals. I once saw a stray dog being run over by an obnoxious driver and my heart really went out to the dog. It was somewhat a traumatic experience for me and even if the incident was already more than 4 years ago, the memory is still fresh and sometimes makes me cry. I'm an animal lover myself and it really hurts to see animals being mistreated and not being taken cared of.

I take it the driver didn't stop? Whenever someone runs a dog over in this country they are supposed to report it..I don't think many do though. How awful to witness such a thing. My heart goes out to you..and the dog.
