What did you want to become when you were young? Doctor, lawyer, policeman, fireman, nurse, scientist, musician, artist.....Did you manage to make your dream become true? I would like to become a scientist when I was young. I wanted to focus on research in the medical field after SARS had happened because I realised that scientists are the people supporting the new technology and techniques to the doctors so as to find new ways to cure the disease and help the patients to have better quality of life. I have picked up biomedical science as my degree at Imperial College in the UK. I hope I can become an outstanding scientists focusing on medical area. However, my mum always think that I am thinking too much and is thinking of something quite impossible and would like me to enter the business field or becoming a pharmist instead which I hate a lot. Did you experience the same with me when your parents did not quite support with your dream?

When I was a kid, my primary dream was to become an astronaut while my secondary dream was to become a pilot. Well, both didn't happened. I ended up being an engineer. But I made this decision on my own and I am not influenced by my parents. I do love being an engineer and I think my skill set is suitable with what I have chosen. Well, really my friends and I was also thinking of being an astronaut when we were kids.

I think my dad has mentioned that he would like to travel to the space when he was young but he did not do that as well. Do boys like travelling to the space? Though I am not a boy, I had once been quite interested in stuff related to astronomy. Being an engineer is quite a good career as well as you become a professionist.

Oh ya. Its true.. I was very strong to pursue astro physics as my career. But it needs a strong maths and physics background. I dont fit that actually. But I still passionate it with my little knowledge!

It is quite difficult to become astronaut as the person needs to be physically very fit and have a high degree of knowledge in stuff related to astronomy. But it is still very interesting to explore more about astronomy on the Earth!

I wanted to be so many things when I grew up that my poor parents couldn't keep up with my ideas. I got good grades in school and when I finally decided that I would like to teach, my parents gave me every encouragement. However, I changed my mind again and went to work as a secretary. I did this type of work for a couple of years and then changed my mind again and finally ended up teaching. Best of luck with your studies and I am sure you will become a very good scientist. Whatever you do, be happy. :)

I think we have to get satisfaction from our career in order to keep us moving onwards. You will definitely get the satisfaction for being a teacher but you have to deal with nauty students or students who are very difficult to teach before you get it. However, I am sure you will enjoy your teaching a lot.

When I was young, I wanted to become a lawyer. It was perhaps influence by my godfather who have supported me in my education. But when I reach college, my plan shifted into something different and from there, I have decided to go with what was in my mind. I have become a paramedic and have worked as a rescuer for 13 years. Now, I am no longer connected with the unit but I conduct training programs on first aid and other life saving skills. Well, the great thing is that no matter what I have decided, I had the full support of my parents.

It is very meaningful to be a rescuer. I have once thought of being a rescuer but they have to pass the physical test before they can enter the training programme in hong kong. I think I am very fit enough to be a rescuer but I learned first aid as well when I was in hong kong st john ambulance. The first aid skills are very useful to both myself and the others.

When I was younger when someone would ask me that I would say a pediatric surgeon. Unfortunately I put what I wanted on the back burner. I guess I wanted to have children more than what wanted to be. I dropped out of college when I got pregnant with my daughter. My parents always told me I could be anything I put my mind to. They always said that nothing is impossible.

You must like children a lot and enjoy your time with them. I hope you will have a good life with your daughter.

Don't lose your hope to became whom you want to be, it's always give satisfaction in life by doing what we really want to do. Your mom is thinking about your future but try as much as possible to reach your goal. My dream is to became a programmer, I am doing a lot of projects, I don't care about the revenue of making them, but I get satisfaction with what I am doing

I think the most important factor for making me happy is not money but for my mum this might be the most important factor. Instead, I want to get my satisfication by trying to contribute in the medical research. A lot of people just do not understand that money is not the most important element in our lives though it is still very important in maintaining our standard of living. However, for me, I just want to carry on towards my goal and to get some satisfaction from it like what you have experienced.

I wanted and still would love to be a neonatal nurse working in a special care baby unit. I have deteriorating vision though so i had to choose a different path. I am now an IT engineer. A bit of a difference, but at least it pays well enough.

Health condition is an important quiteria to help us decide our career. I am really seriously short-sighted. Therefore, I cannot be a doctor as well as they need good eye-sight for focusing the tiny parts of the patients' bodies during operations.

When I was young i wanted to become a business woman because i wanted to manage my own business. I graduated the course Business Management and I have my own business now but i was just a small business. currently i am working as a Manager but I'm not proud to say the people that I m the manager I dont want to brag about it.
@06MLam (620)

you are very humble. Being a manager is already a higher position than a lot of the others. It is glad to know that you are working in the field you would like to work in.

My ambition kept on changing with time. When i was in primary school, i did not know that much about different types of jobs. So i use to think that i should become a school teacher. Later when i was in lower secondary school, i came to know more and so then my ambition changed to engineer. I was really interested to become an engineer. I wanted to become civil engineer. Again later on when i was in middle and higher secondary school, i came to know that architecture is very great job and so i thought i must become architect and i worked hard. But finally my marks were not so high to compete with others for architecture. So finally i landed for computer science and engineering. I remember one of my teacher saying that we must aim high. If we aim for sky, we may fall on the mountain top. Yea that proved to be true. But now i am happy and satisfied.

That's the problem. We might not always be able to do what we like in the university because we do not do well in our exams. But at least you are going to become an engineer which you have once interested before. Hope you will do well in uni!

I grew up thinking of becoming an accountant. But it was my parent's wish that I take up nursing. So I did and now at least i am a registered nurse. It is okay, but I rather would have taken accountancy.

That's a very worthy goal. It sounds like it's quite possible. Parents often want to discourage you because they are trying to be "practical" but don't let them do that. Do what YOU want to do. They'll accept it when you're successful, believe me! When I was a kid, I wanted to be a singer or musician of some kind. Truthfully, I didn't have enough talent so I didn't get there. That's okay, I've had a happy life and didn't have to face crowds of people and being gossiped about in magazines!

The problem is I am not sure whether I have the talent to become a scientist but I am trying to negotiate with my parents and my plan is I will carry on with my goal if I have the academic ability. If I do not achieve a good mark in my degree course which enable me to carry on with my study further, I will enter the business or accountancy sector but I hope this will not happen to me.

I wanted to become a doctor or serve in military when I was young. I did not end up with my dream career, however I have no regrets. Maybe someday one of my kids would have the interest in those fields and I will support them in every way I can.
@06MLam (620)

I have thought of these two careers when I was young as well. However, I am very sure that my parents will think these are too harsh for a girl. I think serving in the military will be more harsh but I will sacrifice myself for my country if my country needs me. I have thought of being a doctor but the requirements for entering the medical school is very high and I do not have very good eye sight. Also, during the horrible SARS period, I have realised that we need scientists to keep investigating alternatives to cure diseases which are incurable now.

When I was a small kid, I often tell my parents that I wanna be a doctor!! After reaching high school and study the subject Biology and chemistry. I told myself, "Man, I would never be a doctor!"
@06MLam (620)
31 Jul 11
I do not like Chemistry as well but I like Biology a lot. I have taken Chemistry for my A-level because it helps me a lot in pursuing a place to study something related Biology in the university. The most annoying thing is I get better marks in my chemistry exams than my biology ones!

When I was a kid, I always had a different answer than everyone else. While my classmates would always say something such as, "Lawyer" "Doctor" or "Fireman" mine would always be, "A famous Model!" lol I did do modeling, but before I could really get "famous" I had my little girl, so I retired early and am now raising my baby girl. =) Never know what may happen in the future, but for now I'm happy being her mom and going to Nursing school. It's more realistic. =)

That's what my mum wants me to be-realistic, rather than too imaginary. Being a nurse will be very harsh but it is quite a popular career at the moment. Hope you will enjoy your life with your daughter and being a nurse!
