When my kitten gets too hot he starts panting like a dog! I have never seen another cat do that. Is it common for a cat to pant that way?

I've read online that when cats pant that means they are VERY hot. I've had 2 cats for years, and I've only seen one of them pant once when it was hot and she was running around for a while. I would suggest you give your kitten some cool water to drink and rub her down with a damp paper towel to cool her down.

Thanks. My kitty is a black cat and it is very hot outside right now. We have decided to keep him in the house as much as possible until this summer heat wave is over.

not especially common, but not unheard of either we ran a cat up and down stairs so many times she was panting, and one of mine pants when he's afraid...

Thanks Elic. He only pants when he gets very hot, so I am glad to know this is fairly normal behavior.
