How's your Heimlich?

A guy I work with came in this evening, with news that someone had choked and died in a nearby local restaurant while there for Sunday Lunch Yesterday..I have yet to get the full story on what happened, beyond it being very unfortunate for the Victim and a devastating loss to their family..They have my Sympathies... It makes me wonder Have any Mylotters done any training with the Heimlich Manoeuvre,or had to put this potentially life saving technique into practise,or had it performed on them? I'm going looking for a reference chart on how to use it right after I post this..I've never trained in the use of it myself, but would have an idea on how to use it...I don't know if I had been there if I could have been of any help to that Person, but I just want to be a bit wiser about it for tomorrow.. What about You?

I have done the Heimlich Maneuver before on a first aid training that we had to pass before getting the driver license. It was a long time ago, but I still remember the requirement - the right positioning of your hands around the person who is having difficulties with breathing and also the direction of pulling my hands.

It seems such a simple technique to learn, and it could save someone's life...I found a "How To" chart online, and printed it off to bring in to work..

That's the Plan...I have trained in First Aid before, but haven't remained current with the training, and wouldn't mind doing a catch up course..We have several qualified first aid trained staff available, and we have a portable defibrillator available too..

That's a good idea! It will improve the life saving skills of other employees working with you!

I took first aid 30ish years ago. In that I did get trained for the Heimlich maneuver, happily I've never needed to use it. Very sad someone lost their life because no body knew how to do it.

That's the thing,I haven't heard yet whether someone tried heimlich on the victim, and failed,or if nobody around knew the technique,or if there were complications meaning they couldn't be saved..but I'm definitely checking the technique out...

I know how to do it but, I have thankfully never had to do it. What a tragic accident and the fact that nobody could help the poor person either - you would have though at least one of the restaurant staff would be first aid trained and therefore would have give it a go?
