Those little things count...

My son was very enthusiastic in telling me what happened in school today. He told me that he got three lollipops as a reward for throwing his trash properly in the waste basket. He said fourth grade students give those rewards to students who are doing this good deed. A simple act, a reward can lead to many things in preserving our beloved earth. Giving a reward can be a good motivation especially for the young learners. At that age, i believe that a reward is more effective than giving a punishment! I'm very thankful with my son's school that they are taught not only about theoretical things but they are taught how to deal with almost everything in life!

Hi toni! I also feel that giving little rewards for small deeds does help a lot via-a-viz punishment. Rewards work as a moral booster and motivation. Punishment discourages a child and develops a stubborn attitude in him/her. This way your child will learn a lot.

Wow this just reminded me of my 1st grade! I got a pencil as a reward from a really strict teacher coz I could recite my tables fluently! I did feel a lot better and maybe that is why I have always been good and interested in mathematics. And it is true that punishments aren't good and they shouldn't be given, especially not to small kids. I really hated when I got punished when I was a kid. It never make me like the teacher, just made me scared of them and resent them. There are some teachers from elementary school that I still despise

OH true. I had one teacher when i was in fourth grade that i feared the most. He was just too strict and would embarrass me in front of class. When i reached high school and got the highest grade in Algebra, i wanted to go back and show him my grades!

Haha there were some very strict teachers when I was a kid and i can swear that I was good in their subject just coz I feared failing and getting punished again

I must congratulate you for rearing your son well! The school is secondary to a child's learning process specially when it comes to good manners and on how things should be actually done in life. It was you who actually did a good job in teaching him how to become a good person. I strongly agree that rewards are better than punishment in implementing things to be done rightly.

you should be really proud of your son! it's amazing that he is already learning the value of looking after himself and the world around him! it makes him a good citizen as well as a well rounded individual. it's been proven that children who learn manners and proper behaviour at a young age, suceed in later life!

That's really cute! Not to mention, encouraging for young people. I don't think I have heard of any school does that for showing good behavior (except during commencement exercises and when rewards like plaques and certificates and medals are presented to model students). Indeed, rewards and positive reinforcement go a long way...not only with kids but with adults as well. :)

Ateneo de Iloilo has good training for children, not only academically. That's why i chose them over other schools for my son as i know he's in good hands.

It's great that his school is teaching your son all these important life lessons, and what good motivation for kids to learn the right things if they are rewarded for even small things like this! Positive reinforcement of good behaviour like this is definitely the best way to ensure that kids grow up balanced and well-rounded. Seems like your son is on the right track!

You are lucky to have an intelligent son and lucky to have chosen a good school who enhances his intelligence. The most critical part of a child's education is in his early years... Now he is eager to learn and adopts fast to the new things. Your son is in right hands and you are lucky.
