questions about interests

I would really like to add more interest and participate more in discussions that interest me. The problem is the 1000s of duplicate interests and how to pick the ones that are actually being used and followed by other myLotters. When I click to edit my interests and then click to add some from a particular group like health problems for instance. Are the interests listed in a particular order? Like are they listed in the order created with newest first? Are they listed in order of how many myLotters have added them? Is there any way to tell at all what are the most popular and most used interests are before adding them?

Pick the interest that has the most followers, if you do it by the numbers you will attract more people to respond to your discussions. If you don't like that idea, just pick the one with your favorite picture/icon. Boo Ya!

I went to look at the add interest interface and don't see how to tell how many followers they each have. Which is partly why I started this discussion. How can I tell from there what interest has many followers?

The number underneath in parentheses is th number of people that have chosen that interest for their profile.

It didn't really come to my mind how to pick topics that would interest me.When I looked for a discussion that interest me, I usually picked on the top discussion section. After posting comments it will ask if you like the topics discussed to be added in your interest , then that's the time for me to pick. Topics of interests is not alphabetically arrange, so if you didn't see one that interest you I guess you can add one.

I have seen that option to add the interest when I have replied to discussions in interests that I am not already subscribed to. It is a good way to do it also. Thanks for the reply.

They are listed according to a complex algorithm based upon how cool the image is, when they were added and how many flies live in your attic. There's no way of telling or of listing them in a useful order, as far as I have ever been able to find. Most of the good ones I'm in I've found by watching where "New" discussions go and subscribing there.

Thanks again Spike. It did occur to me to watch new discussions as you said you do. I was really hopeful there would be an easier way than wading through a lot of stuff I don't find interesting. I think your approach may be the one that fits my need though.

Theoretically they are listed by number of followers, but I have seen some exceptions. I'm thinking of adding everything and then when I go to post it will show me exactly how many are signed up. It also might be fun to go to page 100 or whatever and just add a few of the 1 member interests, that way, after you post there, you can easily move up to number one in that interest (of course you won't see a ranking system until the interest gets more people but YOU'LL know!).
