A rat in the cupboard

We had a rat that kept going into a laundry cupboard and I bought one trap that didn't work. I am a vegetarian so I was worried about killing it in a trap anyway. My flatmate had an idea that the rat was coming in each night under the front door. I thought the rat was coming in through a hole in the wall near the plumbing. I humoured my flatmate and I have been putting one of those stuffed "snakes" that prevent a draft, under the door. The rat doesn't seem to be around anymore. It seems too simple that we can prevent the rat coming into the flat, just by jamming up one door at night. This does seem to have work.ed for a few nights though so I am keeping my fingers crossed. Have you ever had to deal with a rodent problem? Do you know of any cruelty free methods that work to get rid of rodents?
