x is the total number of students. 1/2 of them went to the restaurant ..thus 1/2x went to the restaurant Half of those left went for a walk... that means half of 1/2x or in other words 1/4x 4 went home, and 5 played ball...a total of 9 we know for sure, giving us: x= 1/2x + 1/4x + 9 x= 3/4x + 9 subtract 3/4 from both sides of the equation 1/4x = 9 multiply both sides by 4 to eliminate the fraction and solve x = 36 students went to the movie Now, that wasn't so bad, was it? Algebra is fun! (Thanks Mr. Mac!) Wow, not bad for learning it 31 years ago, huh?

restaurant = 2x walk = x home = 4 football = 5 4x = 2x + x + 4 + 5 4x = 3x + 9 x = 9
