One of my coworkers has several Great Danes. She is very active in a local Great Dane club. Today and tomorrow is their dog show. She agreed to be the photographer for the show and wanted help, so she asked me to come along. I had the day of and agreed. I am so glad I went! I had never been to a dog show before. It wasnt at all what I expected!! Of course there were some snobbish people there. But I also met many wonderful people as well who simply love their dogs!! I am slowly gaining a huge appreciation for Great Danes. Even though they are big dogs, they are mostly so gentle and loving. There were a couple puppies there. I spent some time with several of them. They think they are lap dogs!! They just want your love and attention. I wish that I could take one home with me! Unfortunately, I am not able to attend tomorrow's portion of the show because I have to work. However, I am looking forward to going to another show someday! I think I will become more and more interested in having my own Great Dane to show as time goes on!! I could go for some more puppy kisses right now! Have you ever been to a dog show? What is your favorite breed of dogs? Have you ever spent any time with Great Danes?

Yes and no. Yes, I've spent time with a Great Dane before. It belonged to a friend, or rather her parents, back when we were kids. I didn't get to spend much time with it though as my mom wasn't comfortable with it getting too close to me... And no, I've never been to a dog show, but I do work for a woman that shows dogs. Does that count? LOL As for a favorite breed, I don't have one...at the moment. However, I'm leaning towards Affenpinschers or Toy Fox Terriers. It's funny, I've always preferred larger breeds, but there's just something about these little dogs! Happy mylotting!

It makes me sad how many people are afraid of dogs, especially big dogs, just because their parents are also afraid! Of course each dog is different, but most of the big dogs are gentle and wouldnt hurt you. I have met more nasty little dogs than I have big dogs! I guess there is a kind of dog for everyone. I never really understood the attraction to the 'toy' dogs! But as long as they have a loving home, I am not too worried about it!

"I have met more nasty little dogs than I have big dogs!" So have I! LOL But I've also met some very sweet little dogs too. And I certainly never imagined I'd ever like such a dog as an Affenpinscher! However, the ones I've met I couldn't help but fall in love with. They may not be the cutest dogs in the world, but their personalities more than make up for it! By the way, who said I was afraid of big dogs? LOL If anything, I always preferred them...at least up until recently anyway. Growing up, that's pretty much all we (my parents, sister, and I) had. We had breeds such as a German Shepard (my mom's "baby"), Labs, and even a Doberman. So why my mom was afraid of my friend's Great Dane is beyond me!

Im glad you arent afraid of big dogs!! I think my biggest problem with little dogs is that they seem to bark at everything all of the time!! I live in a townhouse and several of my neighbors have little dogs. Some of them have gotten better over the years. But one neighbor's dog ALWAYS barks at me no matter what. It is so frustrating to me!! I can walk trash out - and it barks. I can get home and out of my car - and it barks. Some days I really feel like throwing rocks at it!! Maybe your mom had a bad experience with a great dane? At the dog show, we did see one woman who allowed her dog to jump on her. I didnt think it was a good idea because it wouldnt know who it could jump on and who it couldnt!! Because they are so big, they could definitely hurt someone by accident!

I have been to many dog shows, as I show my own dogs. It is a lot of work for the people showing you have to properly groom your dog, and make it the best it can be for the show ring. Great Danes are gentle giants. It's nice to see them in the show ring. Showing dogs isn't just about trotting around the ring, it's all about getting a championship on your dog to prove that it lives up the the standard of the breed. When you get the championship in your own breed, your dog is then considered a "special", and you compete against other dogs who are also champions. It's all very complicated. It takes a lot of time and money to compete, and most people do it to eventually breed their dogs. My breed of choice is the brittany spaniel.

When I was at the show, I saw a dog that was newly 'finished'. The owner was so excited!! It was pretty cool to watch. I can definitely see how people spend a lot of money on dog shows!! The entry fees can add up quickly. Not to mention the time to take them to the shows and prepare them! I didnt even know what a brittany spaniel was, until I just searched for it!! The pictures I saw were of very pretty dogs! Do you like to hunt? I think it would be cool to go hunting with a dog!! (Of course I like any kind of hunting but have only been a few times!)

I have been to a dog show that featured my favourite breed of dogs, border collies. I think that these are the most intelligent dogs - its incredible the tricks they are able to perform and they are so energetic and agile! I also love Great Danes - they are like big, gentle giants. But where I live there is not much space so I don't think I could ever own one, unfortunately!

I always thought that Great Danes would need a lot of space too. They really dont though!! Little dogs often need more space than great danes do!! They have so much more energy and run around so much more. A small yard is more than enough for a great dane, especially if you occasionally go to the park or on a walk. I agree that it is cool to watch border collies, they really can do some amazing things! It makes them tons of fun to play with!

I have never been to a dog show as of yet, though I would like to. It sounds like you had a blast derlilaStern! I love to watch the dog show on television and their are soo many catigories and yes the Great Danes are beautiful in show and temperment. They do act like they want to be lap dogs and have such a sense of loyalty to them. They also have a lot of natural grace I have noticed.

I would definitely encourage you to go to a dog show!! One of the best parts? It was completely free to go!! Of course, they have food and other things for sale. But there was no cost to get in. You could have a wonderful day for very little money! I think one of my favorite things about Danes is their temperament!! Thanks for your thoughts!

Golden retrievers are definitely cool dogs! They are very intelligent and loving! Im sorry that you havent been able to have a dog. I know what that is like! I have never had a dog of my own, but I do dream about it!! It is hard to have the time, money and space for a dog!! Instead, I have to visit my friend's house and play with her dogs. I hope your dream of having a Golden Retriever comes true some day!
