My longest plane trips have been 14 hours long and I have found that it is helpful to count the hours down. Sometimes I have been able to watch movies on a seat back screen. Other times I have read some books and magazines. It was ten years of flying for my trips before I got my ear problem solved. On my flight from London to Mombasa a friend gave me a pair of ear planes. On descent my ears no-longer hurt due to the changes in pressure. I have found cabin crew on Qantas very friendly. One time on a First Choice Airlines flight I got a free upgrade. It made my 12 hour journey from the Maldives to London very comfortable and enjoyable. A number of times I have seen stunning views of landscape below from a plane like the Pyramids of Egypt coming back from Kenya, the reef and islands in the Maldives and Sydney harbor just before arriving in Sydney.
What sort of planes have you traveled on?
Which was your longest and your shortest plane ride?
Have you ever seen views that you liked from the plane window?

One of my best flights was from Bangkok to Doha and as we flew over Dubai we could see 'The Palm' which looked amazing from the sky and I also had an upgraded seat so it was a very comfortable flight indeed!

My shortest plane ride was from Papa Westray to Westray, the shortest scheduled flight in the world. Takes about two minutes, you go from one little Orkney island to the other one. It was with a quite small plane, made for 12 passengers and 2 pilots, but two of the seats had been taken out to make more room for luggage. I also flew to Foula with the same kind of plane, the pilot took us for a spin around the island, so we got some great views of the bird cliffs. Landing was exciting, as the air strip isn't plane. And when we left, the local fire men drove up and down to scare off bonxies. (bird, skuas I think)
Once when I left Vienna, the plane for some reason took a roundtrip around the town. Winter, crystal clear weather, looked wonderful. Also second last time I left Iceland, no clouds, so we could see the whole island.
The worse trip I can remember was from the North Island on New Zealand to the South Island. Only about 30 minutes, but I threw up all the time.
The longest trips I've made was once back from New Zealand, once Copenhagen-Seattle and Amsterdam-Japan. Copenhagen-Seattle wasn't very nice, I got the mid seat in 5 seat row and they didn't have the small screens that let you chose what you want to see, but a big screen showing some horrible childrens movie involving a kangaroo.

I always try to get a window seat. If it's a short flight, I don't mind an aisle seat but the middle seat is just annoying. Especially on early flights when you're bound to end up between to big men reading huge newspapers ...
I love the views from the plane when going home. First the mountains in mid-Norway, normally with some snow on the peaks. Then the spruce forest and valleys, and sometimes the plane makes a turn over the fjord and land from the fjord side.

My longest flight was almost 24 hours that included two connections. I always wear earplugs because planes can be noisy. On long flights I usually don't go to sleep because there is always something to do like watch movies. I will be on a flight this Tuesday that will be 8 hours. Besides watching movies I will being some books with me.

Wow! A 24 hour journey by plane and two connections was a very long trip indeed. I hope that you 8 hour flight is going well. I had a flight from London to Cartagena De Indias via Madrid and Bogota earlier this year. The plane was delayed for two hours due to fog then I missed the connection in Madrid. Arriving so late I got free hotel room in Bogota and had to fly on the next day.

I have only been on two sets of flights, and they couldn't have been more different. On the first one, it was from the UK to New York, which took just under nine hours at the time. It was the first flight I had ever taken and unfortunately it wasn't a good experience for me as there was a lot of turbulence so I was unable to relax for the whole of the journey back to the UK. Sadly, this has meant that I now have a fear of flying and the only other time that I have done it I was forced to go to Spain to see my relatives. Now, I will not fly unless it is absolutely unavoidable.

It is such a shame when a first time flyer experiences a turbulent time on the plane. I can see your journey from UK to New York nearly put you off flying. Well done for flying to Spain and seeing if you could have a better time. Good luck if you end up flying again.

Hi maximax,
Artificial though, the crew in the airplane has to behave in such a way that for some moment you forget that you are going to board an aerplain and of late there are many cases of aroplne

My first international flight was MNL-HK with British Airways, that time there was a typhoon, MNL & HK is very near, the air pocket was terrible that all passengers were screaming, I thought I would never land in HK alive.
Another remarkable on was a domestic flight from Baguio (250 km north of MNL) to MNL. I was on duty that time as I was a tour guide. It was a private tour, I have one senior citizen guest, he was 80 yrs old that time...the plane upon take off, the other propeller was not working, it caused panic to the passengers, one Indian has insisted to get off the plane, he said in a loud voice that he is an engineer and one propeller working for a plane is dangerous, he has his family and that's the reason he left the plane, but thanks God that we landed safely in MNL and I enjoyed the view of green rice fields and mountains.
My longest flight was MNL-TPE-LAX....TPE-LAX was 13 hours....I felt so bored that time....
I had nice view when I traveled to Europe...upon looking at the window before landing at Frankfurt airport, I saw the houses with pointed roofs and one shade of color....plus the green meadows...that was so lovely.....that flight was from Kuwait to Frankfurt....from Kuwait...I saw the beautiful sand dunes of the desert and there were black spots which I believe were oil deposits.....
here is one experience that I would never forget.....

The shortest plan ride I had was four hours. The longest plan ride I ever had was sixteen hours. I slept several hours during the long plane ride, but I also read and talked to my sister. I also talked to some of the people near me in the plane. My sister didn't like me doing that, but talking to other travelers certainly helped pass the time.

I think the longest flight I ever took was from Paris to Kennedy International. I'm not sure because we also flew from Chicago to London, and that might've been longer.
I have found that sleeping, when I can do it, passes the time the best, tho I have also cross stitched on planes and that helps too.
I tend to get motion sick if I read, tho I have managed it if the flight isn't too rough.
I got to see a few things while I was flying, but on the long trips I was really too high to see much.
Now... my shortest flight was actually one time at an airshow I got us all tickets on a little 4 seater private plane and we were up for maybe 10 minutes.
The shortest commercial flight I ever took was from San Antonio to Austin, and the pilot was dodging clouds on the way.
I mean, it ONLY takes an hour to DRIVE from San Antonio to Austin, so the actual flight took about 15 minutes from take off to touch down, and he had to circle around to come into the north side of town to land since the wind was from the south.
Now, I only flew from San Antonio to Austin because I was flying from Chicago to Austin and the plane bypassed Austin to go to San Antonio first...
If I'm going to San Antonio, I generally drive because I need a car when I get there.

Oh, how I hated the pain in the ears that came from the pressure change. I got it so bad when I was little on my trip home that it actually made me not like flying for years. I'm glad they have something now to help prevent that.
Anyway, on with answering the questions...finally. It only took me a couple of years! LOL
"What sort of planes have you traveled on?"
I've only been on a couple, but I'm pretty sure both were 747's.
"Which was your longest and your shortest plane ride?"
Both distances were the same as it was just to and from my destination. I think they were about an hour and a half each way.
"Have you ever seen views that you liked from the plane window?"
Yep, I liked the clouds. Being a kid at the time they looked just like big fluffy marsh mellows to me.

Longest was either to hawaii or Europe...about 12 hours each. Shortest was from Eindhoven to Amsterdam. They gave us a snack and by the time we landed I hadn't even finished it yet! I love window seats and love watching the landscape....I usually read. I used to crochet but didn't know if you can take that with any longer...so I have avoided it.

the longest flight i experience is 16 hours. from Manila Philippines to Bahrain. the planes are not yet that high tech like today that there are movies you can watch at the seat back screen, or videos or games. so it was a very boring flight. that is where i saw the movies george of the jungle that kept us company for a few hours. the shortest plane ride i have is 4 hours Manila Philippines to Japan. and i had that flight just last october and the planes are all geared up already so it was a fun 4 hours.

Wow reading your discussions and some of the comments here would really show that you have traveled far places by plane. Honestly, I haven't experience yet long hours of traveling by plane. But I do travel here in our country via plane. But only short distance, the longest I think 1 hour and 45 minutes, I can't remember since I was still in my 5th grade then. But I do hope that someday I could also travel on long distance plane ride.

Regarding this topic, I have remembered my first experience with the plane.
I admit that I am afraid to dying to fly by plane, but it is a necessity for proper, I struggle with this fear every time. When the plane takes off as it's longer, but when it comes to landing the part, I swear that my heart rate reaches a speed comparable to a maximum wrought little engine racing. Returning to my first flight took place many years ago on a domestic route. I flew mine with a wonderful AN 24 the Tarom , we undermine like a shaker.
I remember I was fascinated by how beautiful was the view from above the clouds and I know I asked my father: "Daddy, we get to the Lord God"? Time when Dad was bleached, then smiled and told me not to bother him today though.

i only travel over one hour. that is one house and 20 mins i think. I have not gone thru any international flight. about the views well I see only views that are inside my country and I like them. I only dreamed of making long plane trips which I think won't come. well, you really have experiences when it comes to long plane trips.
