How much do you know about what is happening in the rest of the world?

Sometimes, when we have difficult problems in my country, I come and check in this interest. All I see is small news from the US and almost none from the rest of the world. It worries me, because in many senses we are all together. This small planet must be known by the rest in order to survive. This site has provided me the possibility of learning about other people and other cultures. There is another step to go: what moves them. What are they lacking. Internet, through the UN sites, has provided me with the knowledge of the terrible amount of 2 billion undernourished people on Earth. And there´s enough food, only it´s not taken where it is needed. Now, the student massive movement in my country has had news coverage through the world. Students from other South American countries are with them. The movement is growing because a decent education must be given to every child and not only to the rich. Check it. Check what happens in other countries. There must b an exchange of ideas from country to country in our level too. We can make a change. Though mylot I have discovered that in the most powerful country in the world (the US), health is a lot worse for the mayority of the people than what it is in my country for the poor. Let us learn, let us see what we can do. There are ways. We are the people.

Unfortunately we all have local concerns that we rightly give a great deal of attention to, and sometimes that limits what we care about other parts of the world. Then I only know what I can get from reporters and a few friends on the internet. I certainly don't have the means to fly around the world and find out for myself, so sometimes my information, being second or third hand, is misleading or just plain wrong. I wish we could all cooperate more to end the bigger dangers in the world but politics and religion are always in the way. Someday, perhaps, we will all be one big happy family. I doubt I'll see it though. -The World Lovin' Rat

Fortunatly we have internet now and we can get information from several sources to get a more global picture. That´s how I did it with the Japan earthquake. I could understand then (being my country as sismic as Japan, that the worst was not a Nature made disaster, but something done by men.

Well, I am not well informed what is going on to this world. I am only rely on news from the net and TV. I don't know much about anything...I want to help people but sad to say I can make due to lack of fund... I still trying to make money. Because I have a dream that someday I can put up a business that help people to make something and have their own food with their table...I am very much disappointed to see people around the street begging for a little small amount to fill their hunger... But I am not successful person to immediately enforce what is my dream. I wish someday their are good people that I can find to help me...with my ideals. I don't want to see people being mistreated in the society. I don't want to heard that their are people being disqualified for justice.

aerous is not up to you to put your hand in your pocket and give money away no that is not the case! the way I see it is to push our governments...the people in power...to forget their greediness and do something about the people! we can not stave hunger[ as a single people] just giving a few dollars or a help here and there...that won't help...we need a broad structure where the governments of the world are ready to put their heads together[ and instead of promoting wars] use their power to promote the well beings of the people.

Well, it's really no need for money to help others but a limited thing. We can't just help the government to manage the structure with a good one. Because we are not in congress or any government position to do that. We can't just say to the government "you need to change the structure or system" to improve the lives of the people. To go on the street to inform the government what is our grievances is not a good idea because it will damage the others. The government of the rest of the world today have filled with government official. Government officials are greedy and think only what they get from the government not what they help to the government improve the lives of their constituent...

I agree with alottodo. We cannot do much as single people with no power. But if we are informed, we have a voice. We can get together. I am amazed and moved by the changes that the studens are making now in my country. The rightist government has been forced to change some of his ways because the children, young teens and later teachers, professors and universities got together.Their movement has been so great (yet peaceful) that many students in the rest of South America are with them.

Hi marguicha, I pay attention to world news and so know a little about what is happening in other countries. You are right of course, we are all one people on this small planet and need to stand together. I know that there is far too much hunger and homelessness in the world and you are right too about health care, it should be much better everywhere. I think that we have a good health care system here in Canada, but we also have a far right Conservative government which I don't trust, and we could see our health care system in trouble over the next four years. A left leaning government is always best for the poorest people as the rich just take care of themselves. Blessings.

Hi marguicha! I think that limited knowledge has been a problem for a longtime for alot of people. The thing is that in most countries...the US included...the government and the media only how us what they want us to see. Opinions and knowledge can be often based on the things that we know. Sterotypes. I hate sterotypes. I think that it actually takes a person really wanting to know what is going on outside their box. Even then they have to be careful the information they are finding is legit. Mylot has given me a wonderful chance to learn about people and cultures. I sure have learned alot more than my media wanted me too. Take care.

I also feel that mylot has been a wonderful window for me to see cultures, places and people I almost didn´t know they existed. But it has also motivated me to check online. With the Internet we have the posibility of going beyond what our respective governments wish us to know.

I know that this is very sad to say, but I really don't know about many things that are happening outside of my city and a few things in my state. I used to keep up more on what was going on around the world, but these last few months have passed by in a blur for me and that has meant that I've missed out on a lot of things that I would ordinarily have kept track of. Hopefully, when things start to settle down for us, I will be able to keep up with the world better again.

Dear friend, I know too well that you have a great burden over your shoulders now. Many times it is easier when we are ill than to see our partners ill. Take care of your hubby and kids and you´ll be doing mor than your share for now. There will come a time when this will be in the past and you´ll have time for others.

We may not be able to know everything what is happening in the rest of the world but it is important that we at least try to know something which is very important, very famous and also very dangerous. We must remain ourselves updated with the news what is going on.

I have had to find out in what part of the planet some countries are, after being a member at mylot. And I would not be called an extremelly ignorant person. But we are not aware of what happens away from us, yet there´s the butterfly effect. The tsunami in Japan hit all out planet and we know it. It changed our views about nuclear power, about safty in many ways and about what can be a cause of permanent damage. There are other issues that do not "look" as dangerous, but nevertheless, they are. We must be aware, becauase we need to leave our children a place to live.

Even though I live in the US, I check out the news on the BBC website almost daily. I have found that they have a lot of news about what is going on all around the globe and it gives me a better perspective on how other countries see the US.

I have to admit, and I am sorry that I have to say this, that I don't really know all that much about what's going on in the rest of the world at this moment in time. I know a lot of the bigger things that happen as I watch the news a lot, but that's all from the point of view of my own country (The UK) and this might not be the same way as the rest of the world might see things. The main thing that I think it threatening our world at the moment is the fact that a lot of the major countries are in massive debt. This seriously needs to be sorted out in order to make our world a stable and happier place to live.

The massive dbt of the mayor countries must have an economic and political reason. I wish we, the common people could and would learn more about what´s happening. Because in democracy we can do our bit to stop voting for people who do not represent our interests. But that is only if we get involved, no matter how little. The BBC is one of the best places to learn from the world. It´s yours to browse

You are right we are the people and if we all pull together we should be able help people to education and basics nutrition needs. There is a surplus of food and riches that are thrown away every day in countries like Australia and the US...just to name 2...just imagine if all that could be put towards making a world with less poverty and much needed education where people can have choices and the means to do so.

I´m sure we can do it if we are informed and we get together. I just commented one of the answers I got, telling of how amawed and moved I am with the student movement in my country. It is already making changes at government level. And it started with secondary students.

I do not trust the news very much. When 9/11 happened I was in the military and one day they called a group of us into a small room and told us that they would be deploying us and where they would be deploying us too. They checked us all for cell phones and told us that we were not to tell anyone where we were going and if it came up that someone outside that room knew about it they would know where to trace it. As we walked out of the room there was a TV sitting outside with world news on it and low and behold it mentioned the base I was stationed at and that a group of people would be deployed from it to the country we were supposed to be going to! Of course the news likes to doctor things up a certain way. I am not at all sure that the events of 9/11 happened the way they say it happened. But, you know, it's done there isn't really anything we can do about it now. It just seemed way too convenient to me. And then this latest bit about congress fighting over what to do about the National Debt... what was the purpose of televising that and scaring half the country?!?! Now I just say whatever to the News. I live my life, I stay 'informed' to some extend, but I like to use my brain too and if they are getting out of hand with the News I turn it off.

Hello marguicha, That's why I've been watching other news channels like the Russia Today and NHK Japan because their news actually gives a lot of different information that is happening not only in United States but also the rest of other countries. when I was watching NHK I didn't know Indonesia had some Joint Veteran forces and hostage crisis training together with China. While the Philippines does the same with United States.

Hiya margi, Yes I have seen what happened with the Students in Chile the other Day. Same here is happening as well. Lots of manifestations all over the place. There is now a permanent guard and security in the Plaza Cibeles and the other one near to Paseo de La Castellana that big one I never know the name of it (grin). Health system here is not as brilliant as it might sound either. A lot of small Surgeries being closed down now. For People who live in small Villages it makes it more difficult for them as well. People are getting fed up and seeing more Private Doctors than before so we are sort of going back to what they used to do before. I went with my small Son to one Hospital when he was very young and they horrified me with the amount I would have to pay for some tests to be done and they were very vague about it all. So then I went to the other which took me longer to get attended and they told me the opposite of what the others had told me. Getting very fed up with both of them I took him to a private Specialist that I could not afford but it was almost the last straw and got a much better treatment and he is almost cured of his Asthma. Now there is a return to this kind of thing like as before. Don´t think that it is too good in England either from what I hear from one and another but they do try their best most of the time. They were always great when I went there always.xxx

I heard a man from Spain comment about the begining of the students rise here in Chile and he sounded like our very rightist President. He asked where would we (and Spain) get the money for better education. OMG!!! We have been giving our riches for decades to multinacionales who pay little or no taxes to take away our copper. That´s just one source, of course, I could name a lot more.. Our previous President, Michelle Bachelet, did some very good things for health care here though. I´m specially glad for that now, as I have been diagnosed with a lymphoma. The chemo before was unthinkable for people who weren´t rich. Now it´s on a list of illness that are free (or almost) for all chileans. My niece lives in London with her family and she had a similar exprience as yours with her youngest son. This is whn I feel that anger is not enough.

It's nice of you to worry about other part of the world aside from your country, that's a nice quality you have, me I read news over the internet too, but mostly about my country and some about US because its whats on the site that I read, and also what we watch on the television. I salute your concern to other people.

Thanks, but I don´t feel it´s anything so special. We are all human beings, we all hve family, children, mothers and fathers. The differnnces are mainly in the outside. So I think that if we all learn a bit about each other, there will be less problemsd in the world.

I live in England and we are very well informed about world affairs generally. Most major newspapers carry an overseas section; the BBC is excellent as are Sky and CNN. Of course many choose not to learn about what is going on in the world. But if you want to learn that is easily achieved here.

A very good discussion. We here in the US are saturated with local and national news, but very little from anywhere else, even Canada and Mexico are not well represented in our news. World wide comunication is what will save humanity, it's here and yet we do not take advantage of it. I am no better than anyone else, there are so many problems and issues to fight right in my own back yard that it is hard to see the larger battle.

I pay attention to other countries. I know quite a bit about what is going on elsewhere. I think I would disagree with you about the health care in the US being worse than Chile. That just isn't the case. I would never go to Chile for health care, as opposed to the excellent service we get here. Now, as for food, I believe the answer to that is simple. Poor countries need to have free markets, that allow people to produce more goods, so they can purchase more food. Take a look at Brazil. They are leading the Latin American world right now. You should take note of what policies they have, and emulate them.

For me more because in our news here we know what happened through out the word and if you read the bible it is happened worse because the end is near before we encounter that first it is happened the more calamity and more crime to be.
