a writer is not when what he writes is not appealing or satisfying to his readers? or when he writes and people reading it is moved to tears and cry or when he can touched the heart of those who read it. to become a writer is born or made? each one of us is given inherent gifts and talents. but we need to discover them so that we can nurture and develop them. There might be many consolations and desolations in writing but a true writer never stops because he believes that expressing his views is his way of letting the world know his inner self. have you awaken the writer in you?:-)

Hi janevi :) That's a very thought provoking question you have there! In my opinion... A writer is a person who has the ability to sit and observe, noticing minute details; and through his writing, bring it to the attention of others. The work of a writer would be one that is well worded, with a good vocabulary (though that does not mean excessive use of impressive words- that's called 'flowery' :P), flowing sentences and strong grammar. He uses his creativity and imagination with a flourish, and brings out originality through his way of writing - the ideas may be old, but there are always a dozen ways to express them. His writing would be expressive and hold the attention of the reader right to the end. His words themselves would reflect passion and wonder for the subject at hand, for he'd write as he were part of the subject itself. Also, a writer would be one who has an open mind, for, writing needs examining from all perspectives, thorough research and flexibility. And, the most important, he should be willing to learn and able to take criticism for his work in the most constructive manner possible!! B) As far as the question of awakening the writer in me remains, there's this statement I always quote: "I'm still a work in progress" :) Have a nice day!!

hello vkatrix:-) That is a wonderful definition of what a writer is! Indeed, a writer is a person who is open-minded and very keen to what is happening to his surroundings, puts into writing what he has observed, experienced and researched in a manner that would really reveal his own originality and uniqueness. I can see that you really are ' a work in progress'. Nurture that talent but constantly practicing it until you will be able to develop your full potential as a writer. Good luck!

To be a good writer it is important to (show not tell) your reader the story. For instance: Mary baked a pie. It doesn't say a whole lot and tends to be very boring for the reader. If you said: The aroma coming from Mary's kitchen was enough to make your taste buds set up and take notice, hoping to get a bite of that delicious apple pie. This sentence not only shows but gets your senses going as well.

I do agree with you dlpierce that a good writer should whet the reader's 'appetite' to read as she continues flipping the pages of the book she is reading. It should make her think more and use her imagination, as the writer vividly describes the situation, condition, emotions and places in the story in the case of novels, fiction, adventure, suspense, drama and romance. At the same time, preserving the values and the sentiments of the writer.

I agree that a true writer is one who never stops expressing his views letting the world know his inner self and touch the heart of the readers. Such a writer can always win a lot of readers whenever.

A writer's work of art is also a revelation of his own world, his values, temperament, his views and others. It is his expression of his innerself in a literary form.

Is writing not a form of communication? A person is a writer when they have the ability to put their ideas and feelings down in a clear, impacting way. Writing is an art. Some are born with the gift, but even they must polished it. Some are born as poor writers. They can work on becoming writers but have a much harder journey ahead of them. Some will make it. Others will not. I like to think that I have awakened the writer within me. I have always been told by my teachers in school that writing was my strong point. But I don't know. The audience is the true test and I have net yet had an opportunity to test my ability. :)

Yes Awinds, writing is an art, one of the tools in communicating. Each one has inherent capacity to write but as you have said, some are born with the gift and others need to polish it. One can become a writer in her/his own right. When the readers appreciate what you have written you succeed in conveying the message you wanted. You can become ONE of them. Just keep on polishing your skill. Good luck:-)
