Expiration Date of Discussions

I was amused to see a recent reply to a discussion I made a year ago. It's quite funny that an outdated topic still attracts a responder. I initially thought that I should suggest that discussions should have an expiration date so new discussions can be created with minimal percentage of duplication but then I thought, who are we to say that a topic is outdated or not. The responder to my one year old post most probably thought that the discussion was still interesting so she still made a comment. I dont make comments to old posts. This is because I think the one who made it wouldnt be interested to discuss about the topic anymore. I would probably still comment on a month or 2 month-old post but a year old post... dont you think that should already be expired?

That is another of the joys of myLot - topics never expire. I have no problem responding on older discussions statrted by other users or receiving responses or comments on my own older discussions. I will go and comment on new responses no matter how long ago they were posted. Even when a discussion has already had the Best Response awarded it is not closed and we can still participate on it.

because of discussions that dont expire myLot has somewhat become a huge a Wikipedia of it's own --- a huge collection of discussions. and it's very amusing to see what kind of discussions you can dig out when you use the search button. I guess there wouldnt be that much to search if myLot erases old discussions.

I have got responses to discussions I have started more than a year ago. I guess the earning potential of our discussions is continues. It is possible that the discussion you have started is very unique and some newer users to mylot found them interesting and responded to them. So you may have earned for the discussion started a long time ago.

I understand. We need to participate by going back and commenting on the responses we have received.

That's it! MyLot is a discussion site and is not for questions and answers. The more we get involved in back and forth exchanges with other users then the more we are doing what myLot was created for, discussing, and the more we will be happier with our earnings too

We earn wherever we post our responses and comments, even if the discussions were started years ago. However we do NOT earn when others post a response on them. In order to earn we must go and add a comment because we only earn for our own efforst and not for those of others.

No. If the person who started the discussion is no longer interested in it, they would most likely have marked a best response. If not, then I feel that they still haven't found an answer that they truly like so why not post a comment? Your answer might be the one they're looking for. It doesn't matter how long ago the discussion was started. And anyways, even if nobody else was interested in a year-old discussion, it doesn't hurt to comment in it. Duplication of discussions happen a lot, even to those that were started mere weeks ago.

That's true. Some people might be looking for a different type of answers even if the topic of the discussion is the same.

yep.. I think duplicated topics are more common for hot current events but duplication of an old post also happens. I dont think admin is that strict about discussing about the same topic... its how you present one because even if 2 discussions have the same topics, it can became totally different conversations

I also try to make comments only on recent discussions, as you said up to 2-month old discussions. It is also good to wait and see how long interest in a particular topic sustains.

yep! especially if it's about current events. like, i can still comment on JLo and Mark Anthony's divorce but not on Jen Aniston and Brad Pitt's. There are just some issues that have to die. but of course, this is subjective and it is up to each person to decide which is interesting for them or not.

Hi ddaguno! I believe that no matter how old a discussion is as long as the content is with quality then it shouldn't be removed. It is one way of myLot as well to tell us that our ideas and opinions are valued that they are forever there. I have made many responses already to old posts and as old as 5 years ago. There were times I still would receive a response and that's wonderful. I would never hesitate to share my thoughts on a discussion that catches my interests no matter how old they already are.

Hi sais06! did you get any response from that 5 year old post? Whoever started that post should be one of the pioneers. When did myLot start anyway?

I tried to do a search regarding the actual age of mylot but it seems like that is a mystery.

Yes there were some of them who responded back but most of them doesn't. I've been with myLot for several months so I don't really have much idea when myLot actually started. It just usually doesn't matter to me if a discussion was so old already as long as I have something to say then I speak my thoughts. I guess it won't do any harm to respond to them.

i still receive responses to some of my old topics and i too respond to old discussions from time to time. there are no problem about it, i guess, as long as there are interested to respond or we respond to even a two or three year old topic.

i always find old posts a joy to read or respond to, even if they're already a couple of years old. it shows that mylot has a rich history and that it's been around long before i even knew of it. i wonder where those old members are... i wish they'd be more active. :)

There are just discussion which are interesting for some people that don't goes old with time.I found an interesting topic that was started 5 years ago.I wanted to respond to it but hesitated because it's been too old.I also wonder if we can still respond to a discussion in which a best response is already selected.Does myLot have any rulings ion terms of responding a discussion?

nop. as far as I know, myLot allows you to respond even if the discussion was started ages ago. and even if the best response has already been selected you can still give your comment. I also hesitate to respond in old posts not only because they're too old but also I sometimes think that the one who made the discussion is no longer active and that my comment will just go to waste. selfish, i know

hi:) On my first day here on mylot, I keep checking the post of my new add friends, and if I'm interested to their posts I replied it without checking the date, perhaps some of that is already old, but I don't care as long as that topic is on my interest. perhaps your old post is interesting that's why it still have a response until now.

if you look at home home page, the discussion that got the latest response goes up on your list of 'discussions I started.' so in a way, yes it's kind of renewed.
