Anyone know what can cause a computer to stop detecting headphones?

I'm having this problem now. I have a Dell machine running Windows 7 64-bit. Sometimes, it fails to detect my headphones and plays sound through the in-built speakers instead. Strangely, when I test the sound through the volume control, I can make my headphones play sounds. It only doesn't work with... anything else.

ok buddy, you can try which below: 1.try to reinstal the sound driver, may be something wrong with the driver 2.check the output jack/port on your pc/laptop maybe it has been broken 3.try to use another head phone, maybe your headphone got a trouble maybe it's my suggestion... good luck

I haven't tried reinstalling the drivers yet. I'll try that later. My headphones do work on other devices, so I don't think it's a headphone issue. Might be a jack issue, but I sure hope not. It's a pretty new machine so it's not supposed to start failing this soon.

This can mean different theories, one is that you either have an outdated head phone driver, or two, your headphone and sound card does not match or is not installed properly. What you’re going to do is, to check whether you have updated your software driver most especially your sound devices. Any plug devices should be installed or detected by your hardware so that it will function. Another, is that your sound card may either not work properly, so the best way you can do is to check whether your sound card is installed correctly and if it is functioning well. You can do sound device updates through the control panel or try to plug and re-plug the sound card and check whether or not it is functional or not, if it does not work, you can buy a portable soundcard from your local computer gadget shop.

I've had headphone and sound problems before and it was always because of the sound driver. Have you updated your drivers recently? Because when I get bored and start messing around with my PC I usually get problems like that. You can also test some other sound device on your machine to see if the problem is your computer or your headphones. Cheers :)
