Is it accurate?

I used to have an Italian friend who could hardly speak English and he wanted to send me an email as he said he couldn't express himself by just chatting. He needed more time to translate his words into English using google translate to express whatever he wanted to tell me. I waited for a week before i got the email and yes i understood what he meant. Is google translate really that accurate? Would you recommend it for others to be able to participate in this discussion? Would it create more confusion or would it help clarify things up?

When I was still in college we had a Spanish subject and used babel to translate some words for my homework but it didn't work great at all. My professor also discourage me to use that kind of translation since it wasn't that accurate. You might as well look for a human translator in the web but I think you have to pay them if you want an accurate translation though.

I have seen how it translates languages and also tested it on Swahili and it did came up with somehow good sentence but not that recommended for use in official places. Its as if it translates word by word and some words, making it place words where not needed. But its cool, I have been using it in translating other languages, its really helpful in such occasions.

Would you recommend it to people who are not fluent in English to use it here in making discussions and responding to one?

I use it all the time. I mostly use it for a rough complete translation for languages that I don't know at all, or to translate a word or two in one I do know, or to double check spelling. In using it as a whole translation it only gives the just of whatever was written. It's not perfect.
