It hurts so bad...

I live in the United States of America. In new jersey to be more specific. Yes, the USA, the home of the free, land of the brave. Give them your tired your poor..,,just dont give them any muslims. I hate the fact that when people talk to me they don't realize that I am a muslim from birth, many generations of a muslim family. And they talk all this crap about muslims. I'm just standing there nodding my head until they finish ranting about how all muslims need to get the hell out of america and how they are all terrorists and how they would hurt them so bad. Then comes the bombshell. I tell them "really? because im a muslim." and then they sart taking words back and making excuses..."OMG your hair is so blond and your eyes are so green and your wearing jeans and a tank top. and wow your boyfriend is a puerto rican agnostic. How ar eyou muslim???" How would i answer that? Since when does muslim come in a color?? It is a RELIGION. People can convert to it. An irish green eyed red head can say "La illahe illalaha, Muhammadan Rasulullah" translated as "There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his messenger", and VOILA he/she is a muslim. Their skin does not all of a sudden become tan and their eyes dark brown and their hair black. Yes, islam originated in Saudi Arabia where people are darker, but it is also the fastest growing religion in the world, with 1.57 followers and new converts everyday from all walks of life. Anyway, by teh time I explain all that, their just looking at me in a new light like..I wonder if she has terrorists in her family or is that her real hair....um yeah! thats my hair and NO TERRORISTS in my family from turkey, where terrorism is HIGHLY FROWNED UPON. So a little food for thought.. im interested, does anyone have stories of religious ignorance you have been subjected to??

i proudly say that I'M MOSLEM..!!! but thank God I live in Indonesia where Islam is a majority religion. . yeah, i think it's hard to live in America after 9/11..it's great you can be still moslem with all of that pressures. it triggers me to ask you questions: how can you be moslem in that condition? i think you're so cool. you are able to face all the obstacles. n you're still moslem! (i wonder many times..). keep on your faith friend cos Alloh is always by your side. no wrong with Islam. Islam is not the same with terrorist. terrorists are bad people, they did bad things on the name of Islam. and it's not Islam at all, they're devils. Islam means peace. and it will always be. HAPPY RAMADHAN..!!!

Oh my god leaving my faith does not even cross my mind. If i don;t have Allah (c.c) and Islam, I would be lost. There's no ignorant person in the world that could make me follow the Devil. Indonesia has the largest population of muslims in the world and theres like no terrorism there, which proves that Islam is not all about terrorism, or at all. :-( I just feel sad that there are so many people that hate God.

I have! (and before I begin i must say that those people are rude!) So one day i was sitting at school at lunch with my friend and she started talking down about christians, knowing im a christian..she went on to say "how can those people believe what a stupid book says" and it really hurt me. As far as what i believe, i think that everyone is entitled to have their own religious beliefs and not have it affect the way people look at them..i mean, when my friend said "those people" it made me feel like i didnt belong in her presence, and thats just not right!

Yes jennypenny, that term "those people" really disappoints me because you are basically taking away someones individual identity because they simply read the same book that millions of others do as well. Msakes no sense. Likw when people say about muslims "those people need to go back to the desert and where they came from", im like okkk, turkey is mountains and oceans so I guess all muslims dont come from the sand.. ignorant. You should definitely speak up in these situations, not in a hostile way but it soounds like your "friend" needs a little educating. why would you let her utter and blatant disregard for ur beliefs hurt you? its not like ur forcing her to follow...

I am a new Muslim and when someone hears that I married and converted, they say I am forced. But I am not. My husband did not even tell me to convert, he said I am free to believe in whatever faith I have. But I am enlightened and converted in my own free will. People think of Muslims as terrorists in majority. In my country, when a man says he is a Muslim, the next question will be, "How many wives you have or plan to have?" But it was not like that at all. When I converted I got the answers to all the doubts and questikns about my previous religion... There are a number of Muslims in one part of my country a d sadly they too are judged to be terrorists. We have our own Diyarbakir version on one of my country's region. And during the time when I still don't know about Islam, I also feared Muslim people. Some people judge without knowing and that is sad. Now that I have converted some of my school friends gossip about me converting. Some of them even stopped communication with me. But I dont care. I am happy with my choice and my family is suoporting me as well. Like you, I also don't jist keep quiet when I hear someone talking in a wrong way about religion. I find it very unfair for Islam. I never hear Muslim people talking against other religion... but other religions keep on condemning Islam to be bad.

I agree with you. I feel like I am living my life from the start again right now. I feel enlightened as I learn new things everyday about Allah. I am happy and contented now as a Muslim and I am proud to be one too.

first of all congratulations and Salaam Alaikum. :) You are so right. I cannot speak ill about other religions simply because Islam prohibits me from doing it. It is a requirement of Islam to believe in ALL of Allah's (c.c) prophets and books. Let them gossip. And i never understood the forcing thing. it is not considered converting if it is not done thru the person's own will. That is why ALlah )c.c) gave us humans free will.

Any religion might have radical followers. Every action their made they believe is in the name of religion. But in fact, they doing it to fulfill their ego not to defend their religion. They never think that their action might hurt other. Even I'm not muslim, I don't hate people who believe in it. For what? There's no reason to hate religion. God create religions to make peace and love not hate.

hmm, lets see, my case could be called that, except mine is completely opposite from your story. I still want to share my story about the subject though, so here I go. I personally do not believe in Gods, religions or any of those type of these, so in short I'm atheist. So the majority of the population here is catholic or from another Christan religion. They mostly keep talking about the bible from time to time and constantly keep asking each other "What church are you going to? did you read this part of the bible?" and so on. So eventually they notice that I am not talking with them about those things (which I have no interest in) so they start asking me questions about it, so I tell them that I do not go to church and when they ask I just say the truth since I dislike lies. So they start trying to convert me into their religion and want to make me accept their church and whatever. I deny to, because I really don't want to, so they get kinda mad and just ignore me from then on, label me as a bad person and just avoid me from then on. I just find it wrong, each person has different beliefs and disbeliefs and you should never judge a person based on that, without not even giving them a chance to find out how they truly are.

In America or even in other countries, anyone will run into someone who is ignorant and discriminating. It doesn't matter race, religion, creed, etc. There is always someone who has something to say. I am Dutch, Swedish, Irish, and Indian. I am Methodist but I don't believe in organized religion. Over my lifetime, I have heard jokes and slander about my nationality and I really get it about not going to church. I let all this go in one ear and out the other. I am proud of my nationality and my strong beliefs. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, even it it makes you upset. Don't debate with these people because that is what they want. Just say "that is your opinion". Be proud of who you are and walk away from those who want to be ignorant and discriminating.
