Is It Really True That You Can Earn A Decent Income on Odesk.com?

For the Odesk user here on myLot.com, is it really true that you can earn a decent income on Odesk.com? Let us say, more than $200.00 dollar or $300.00 every month? I have read one blog from the internet that she earned more than $100.00 dollar every month and she was happy about it. She said that she was struggling for the money to earn a decent income by joining any 'paid-to-program' like 'paid-to-post' forum, 'paid-to-click' and so on, but still the money she had earned was not enough and so, she decided to join Odesk.com and she applied a job as a forum poster, and earned enough money to her needs. I have already seen Odesk.com, but it seems that those members who were in the Odesk.com were looking for an applicant that has a bachelor degree or job experience before they hire you. I am tempting to go back again on Odesk.com, but I am so afraid that no one would hire me because I did not finish my college degree and I do not have any job experience. I have already created an account on Odesk.com, but based on my experience, I was frustrated because no one would hire me and so, I decided to quit and search to any "paid-to-program" to earn money, but then again -- I realized that I want to go back on Odesk.com because I have read on one blog from the internet that you can earn a decent income. I really want to go back on Odesk.com and I want to be sure if it is worth to work on Odesk.com. Am I really going to earn a decent income from Odesk.com? Am I qualified to work on Odesk.com even if I do not have any job experience and I am only a college level? Anyone...? I want to know your full experience on Odesk.com -- he he he

oDesk is simply a freelance marketplace. You don't need ANY qualifications to do the jobs the employers post, unless they specifically ask for them. For example, I have no professional qualifications at all for the work I do (writing and editing) but I've still picked up work there in the past. Some of it pays badly, some pays well - a BIG part of the learning process on there (and other bidding sites like Elance, Guru and Freelancer) is picking out the good employers and avoiding scams. Rather like anywhere else on the Internet, really! As for money, it depends on your skills, how much time you commit and what the employers are offering. oDesk itself doesn't pay - the employers do, for the jobs they post - so it can be very up-down-up-down. Personally, I picked up one of my now-regular clients there and my work for him brings in hundreds of dollars every month. Has done for a couple of years now, with off-months and times when there was no work, of course. There's a LOT of info about the bidding sites on my blog, such as tips for bidding, scams to watch out for and so on. Most of it's filed under Elance but the same goes for all the bidding sites. That might help. In my opinion - which is not the same for everyone, of course - I recommend the bidding sites as a great place to start a freelance career. You'll get burned at least once on a job (we all do) and you'll struggle to land your first job (we all do) but they're a great source of work. The big things to remember are: be honest, answer the employers' questions in your bids, don't undercut the amount you need to earn, learn to spot the good employers and watch for scams. Just ask if I can be of more help. I'm no pro but I know the bidding sites reasonably well.

Yes, oDesk is a website for online freelancers, and they do not require much on college degrees. But at least, you must have a specialized skill that you are good at, in order for you to be hired by a client. If you think you are not cut for it, then be honest with yourself, go elsewhere, you may start a money-making blog, and make it big there. Keep your options open.

@ SpikeTheLobster, I have already finished reading your blog. Its so wonderful that I read them all, especially on how to create e-book. I like to create e-book because I want to create a story if I have time... he he he I am going to start fixing my resume and portfolio in my profile on Odesk.com this month of September, but now -- he he I have lots of things to do. @ magtibaygom, Hmmm... money-making blog is okay with me, but what I know in creating a blog is the content must have SEO [search engine optimization] and I do not know anything about SEO. I also don't know how to earn money from blog, but if I have time, I would try to create a blog and earn money from it.

I'd suggest you look at all four of the major bidding sites - Elance, oDesk, Guru, Freelancer. One of them will fit your way of working better than the others and it's always best to be comfortable (I always preferred Elance, with oDesk second). Thanks for the compliments about my blog. For SEO basics, check out Peter Hoggan's free 12-part course on HubPages: http://peterhoggan.hubpages.com/ - SO helpful and easy to follow.

I met a college student who was able to buy a laptop within months of working on odesk but the point is for you to earn decently or let's just say be recruited by an employer, it's recommended that you have a specialization. Example, that college student was knowledgeable on web design etc., that's why he got employed and earned decent money. There are a lot of categories of job offers on odesk, my best advice is that you take all exams that you can and aim for a high or decent percentile and lastly start applying to low-paying jobs for the sake of getting a good rating and eventually you will be able to apply to higher paying jobs etc.

Yup, well obviously he was really fortunate because his course was like computer science I think lol. I am going back to odesk as well because after one year of trying various earning sites, I have only a handful of trusted sites that I use.
