I love to take shots of different subjects but I am not a professional photographer. I don't have any background in photography either. There are times that I get good shots while there are times that I do have bad or blurred shots. Last Saturday, I was fortunate to attend a free seminar on basic photography coducted by Canon. It was a wonderful experience for somehow it helped me become educated in the field of photography. I need to learn more sho I will be able to get better shots.

I also love taking pictures but have no formal knowledge. I find there is so much information when trying to research that I end up not knowing what direction to go in. This is the point where I usually put it down and walk away for a while due to frustration. Does anyone know a good book to start with? I know very basic info about my Sony camera, but my frustation is more with setting up good shots. I like shooting my kids, scenery, and my husband's band. I get a good shot here and there but wish that what I am trying to do would actually turn out in a photo. I can't quite get the image in my head onto my camera. Thanks for any help.

Hi Cemerson, I am also new in photography. I have started to learn the art of taking good pictures and it really requires experimenting and practice. If you are looking for a book to read, perhaps you can try Understanding Exposure by James Peterson. I do think that this is indeed a very nice book to learn about photography. You can also check out some youtube videos that provide a good deal of photography lessons. Just add me as a friend and I will send you some links. I have applied the lessons and I have seen that they are really good for learning. You can view some of my pictures on this link: http://picshutter.blogspot.com/ (not a referral link) if you take a look at my old post those were my old shots where I did not study yet. Compare the pictures on the newest post where I have applied what I learned from the book and from the youtube videos. There is indeed a great difference. I hope to learn more and take better pictures as I continue. Best to you and keep on learning.

I don't have a background in photography, but somehow I get to have shots which are ok. I'd love to join a photography class here in my city but the classes conflict with my work schedule. I do read books about photography and read online tutorials so that I get a better understanding about photography. But as my friend said, always practice taking pictures so that you'll learn the different settings of your camera.^_^

End of Football Game - hand held shot at about 10:00pm under football lights
A few basics for taking good photos. 1. Know you subject and study it. For wildlife study their habits and environment. For Sports shots understand the game and players. 2. Know your camera and try different things with it. 3. Practice 4. Experiment 5. Practice 6. Experiment some more 7. Practice some more 8. Try photographing something totally different 9. Practice 10. Repeat steps 3-9 very often and take lots of photos I tried out a new lens tonight at a football game. Using my Canon 50D with a Tamron 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC (Vibration Control) this is last years model and I saved $250 by purchasing it. You are supposed to get good low light hand held shots. Here is one shot hand held at the end of the game shot at 270mm with an ISO of 3200. Keep practicing with you camera and try different things. Good luck and good shooting

hi doris! good for you then. photography is a something that i want to get in as well. i want to learn how to develop pictures from negatives like what they do in the past. everything is so high tech nowadays. anyway, photography is a hobby i want to be involved in. perhaps not now but when i have the time next year, i will surely be into it. i've already started saving to purchase a good camera plus i've been reading on the subject as well. i have friends who are into photography. one of them even has his own studio and are conducting classes back in the states to those who want to learn the basics as well as advance photography skills. good luck in your new endeavor doris! do post the pictures you've taken so everyone in the mylot community can see it. cheers!!!

practice makes perfect, so they say. i also love taking pictures but there is no "science" on that, sometimes i am lucky to get a considerable or artistic shot, but some are just okey though.

I also don't have any background in taking pictures but fortunately took artistic shots on different subject. Try to read first boos about photography and more practice on taking shots. This will give you more idea and strategy on how to take good pictures. I use the manual option of my SLR in order for me to learn the lighting and focusing on subjects. Good luck to us. :)
