Lately i've been obsessed with running. I couldn't run for long miles and for a long time but i'm trying to increase the distance every day. I'm also trying to increase my stamina little by little everyday. I run alone as my husband is too lazy. Sometimes i run in the morning sometimes i run at night. Yesterday my period finally arrived and i wondered if i should run or not. Since i'm a geek, i went over the internet if running during menstrual period have any adverse effect on a woman's body. And i was happy to know there's none and in fact some women run in a marathon during their periods and even won! So nothing and nobody can stop me from running! I am enjoying it with or without the menstrual discomfort! Let's go and run mylotters!

you think i should responding to this one as it seems to me that this one concerns only the women. but anyway, i thought about running. i have not run for years. i am not really a runner but i used to be a member of the athletic team way back in school. i see a lot of groups here organizing fun runs and some of my officemates are convincing me to join. i really love to run and try if i can still do. i guess i should start with a thousand meters first. but the main problem with me now is i don't have running shoes. i even told an officemate if i can use my office shoes in running. and he said, get a white marker and mark the shoes, "running shoes"

Hi Neil, no one says you can't run without running shoes. A flipflop would do , what about running barefooted?

Neil, one important thing i discovered through my research in enjoying your run effectively is getting a good pair of running shoes. You might end up hurting your feet and won't be able to run effectively. And no, running barefoot is too much in this country of ours to handle. And flipflop would be too dangerous. I'd rather advice you to walk!

That's what they said to me.. To reduce the cramp and the pain during menstrual period get active and do things that makes you move your part of body. Looking at your style I am sure nothing can stop you from enjoying your hobby! But sis is it safe for you to run at night??

It is good for you to have a very safe place to do your routine. Here we should always be careful especially ladies to do the jog alone.

Oh yes it's safe. I live in an enclosed village with a security guard guarding the gates of the village. My neighborhood is a friendly one and almost all the people around me know each other's face if not the names.

You are really dedicated runner. . Hats off to you for your determination and hard work. It is true that there is nothing like running and it is the best exercise to keep our heart healthy and it strengthens our stamina and will power and when we sweat while running, our body discharges many waste products. I go for evening walk,as I do not get much time for running.

hi toni. i'm a big fan of running as well. been part of my regular routine to run either in the morning or late afternoon/early evening depending on my work schedule. i have 'running' as one of my interest here in mylot. you can check out the discussions there as i'm sure you'll find very good tips on running and everything about it. running is one of the more effective and cost-efficient sports in my opinion. you just need a good set of running shoes, a pair of shorts or jogging pants, and a good shirt, a place to run, and then you're all set. as long as there is a road to run on, i'll keep running! cheers!!!

I once got addicted to running too and I still run every morning. The first few days was really hard! Actually I got hooked on it when I took part in this sport and as a warm up we had to run about 15-20 laps. I seriously felt like I couldn't breath and it was so difficult catching up with the rest but slowly my stamina built up and now I can run but not for so long though! Anyway keep enjoying the run as it is healthy and the most effective way of losing weight too. Cheers!!

Though my objective is not to loose weight, I still enjoy running to stay fit.

When I started to read this discussion, before I got to the bit where you looked it up on the internet, I was actually going to say to you that it’s a known fact that exercise whilst on your period, can not only relieve PMS, but can also help reduce cramps! “Many myths continue to circulate about exercise during menstruation, but it seems in general to be beneficial. Science hasn't fully characterized the effects of menstruation on exercise[1], but in general, moderate exercise appears to ease premenstrual tension and menstrual cramps.[2] Thus, there is generally no need to sit out or take it easy just because you have your period.” see :)

I usually do sit ups before my period comes but i have never ran before. So i just needed to check it out on the net too to find if it has any adverse effect or should i take it slow. I needed to know too what i need to prepare before running during this time as it might increase the flow or maybe it might stop it. But i've done it, it increased the flow while i was running but it didn't have any adverse effect other than that.
22 Aug 11
it increased flow while you were running? god.. i don't think i'd be too keen on that lol!

You mean excessive? But i'm not doing it in excess. I don't run beyond what my body can handle.

The only adverse effect is to people who would see someone running with blood dripping in her legs for failure to put a pad on. It would surely give me a heart attack.

So true! Or maybe the pad has been soaked already and that person forgot to change pad! ewwww

Running is a great exercise. After it I feel very well and relaxed. I participated in some races and it was funny. I did it only as hobby and entertainment. I trained before a race several weeks. I had a plan and a routine. When race´s day came I was ready. I was satisfied after running and doing a good race. I participated in five-or-ten-km races.
