Why they get it wrong so often

Nice sky, clear weather - Beautiful scenery of what great weather should be like

The weather forecast is something we all listen to. Sometimes they're right, sometimes they're dead wrong. Today, they tried to forecast what the winter would be like here in Montreal. They say we wont have any cold before January. Seems like the fall season will stretch and stretch till January. I guess it means we wont have any snow for xmas then . Its been a great summer, hot with not too much rain, just a little bit when it was needed for the grass, trees and flowers. So cant complain about our summer. Do you listen to the weatherman before you do anything or you dont rely on what they say anymore? What about longterm forecast? Are they usually right, or wrong?

I think that it is not so much that they get it wrong but more so that although the clouds appear to be one way that eventually they shift and our weather changes. Although they have the ability to predict, they can't control the changes. lol

That's where it is.The weather is intricate and volatile. It is unreasonable for us to demand that they must be a hundred per cent sure in weather forecast.

They are pretty close sometimes, but yes it would be difficult to know for sure.

Im so sorry it took me so long to get back to you two. Oh I know they cant be right all the time. It would be nice if they were though, then we'd know for sure what will happen. But like you both said, it changes too fast all the time.

A storm may arise from a clear sky. Here ,there is a old saying.we take the weather forecast for what it is worth. However Over here,to be fair they are eighty per cent right to sum up .I always feel there is some strange freak in global climate .

Sorry for taking so long again !! I guess you always need to be careful when you go out then if a storm can start without much notice. Here its the wind we have to worry about. We can get strong winds all of a sudden, then no wind at all Stay safe!!

Personally how can any weatherman even begin to predict the weather forecast that far in advance? They should know that anything can happen, and that one day all the weather pattern needs to do is shift and we could be all wishing for the days we have been having. Here in the Seattle area it has been colder and wetter than most yrs. a lot of the time, so hope somehow winter does decide to be a little more dryer for sure.

Sorry for the delay . Yes Ive noticed that the weather has been quite bad this summer in the West area. We had a dry summer here on the East Coast but had to face Hurricane Irene though . I dont remember ever having to face a hurricane before in all of my life but happy it wasnt what they predicted it would be......phew!! Hope you get a dryer winter. Have a look at your onions (locally grown) do they have many skins or only one layer? If many skins, you'll get lots of snow and it'll be very cold. Only one skin, then it'll be warm and not that much snow. I know it sounds crazy but learned this from my SIL's boyfriend who's a farmer. And, turns out its always true!!

We live in a very special area, we are in a small valley with high mountians around and it is very hard to forcast the weather here. I am surprised how well they have been doing in recent years, it seems to get better all the time. But it only takes a small change in the surrounding areas to change our weather dramaticly.

Sorry it took me so long to reply . I too live surrounded by a lake on one side and mountains on the other and Ive noticed that if they predict rain, it will rain all around and not where I live.....of course, when we DO get a storm, then Ive noticed that it'll "stick" like its trapped and it'll go away and come back again. But I like where I live....we can avoid the big storms.......most of the time . Ive noticed too that they're getting better at it and dont think it'll ever be perfect, too many variables!

Hey bubbles, To me personally they won't ever get it right because they don't really know if you notice numbers will always change even if it's with the inches of snow fall or the amount of rain or temperature. The numbers are never on point sometimes because they predict these things. They have technology that helps them figure the pattern and the when and where of the situation but even technology isn't right sometimes. As time goes on technology will advice as it has been doing for many many many years now and the weathe will be easier to predict but it I'll never be on point because everything when it comes to weather is nothing but predictions haha and educated guess. Might be right might be wrong might be a little off or a lot off but, don't expect too much from the weather.

Hey payout, Sorry for the delay in replying . Oh I know how wrong they can be with how many inches of snow we can get. They do it all the time, trying to predict but it doesnt always work. I too will listen to what they say but I never take it for granted, it can always change for the better

I put on the weather channel everyday as I dress up for work. Usually they could get it right for the day, which helps in determining what clothes I'll be wearing. But not long range forecasts. Weather here keeps on changing anyway so it'll be hard to predict what the fall, much less the winter would be like. The summer has been great here in the west coast though.

Sorry for the delay in answering!! Someone higher up in the conversation said that it was really bad for her in Seattle, lots of rain. It was the same here in Canada on our West coast....very bad weather they had. But Im on the East coast and we had a dry, hot summer. They say it'll be a warm winter with not much snow......we'll see if they're right!! Lets hope your winter is nice also on the West coast!!

In Oklahoma City, our weather-professionals are very-calculating. Gary England helped 'invent' Doppler-radar, and so we've got several points-of-view; I'm guessing that most weather-forecasters only have one point of view ... kinda 'the wind's blowing fast this way, and there's a storm over there," ignoring the fact that the storm over there is in a wind that's blowing that way and all sorts of factors we non-'weather-professionals' aren't even thinking about. Of course, you've got to know that long-term forecasts like you describe are totally guesses (guesses based on guesses based on guesses, more like).
