The Pope is visiting Spain and the costs for the Spanish state are enourmous. This happens in the middle of an economic chrisis. Many are protesting against this kind of use of their tax money. http://english.aljazeera.net/news/europe/2011/08/201181825732887362.html In sharp contrast, how did the leading persons among the first Christans do? They were very humble, hard working and had no salry for preaching the good news and teaching in the congregation. They were volunteer workers and saw themselves as servants of their brothers and sisters. They worked for their living and used what time was left for spreading the word of God. The apostle Paul is one example of having a part time job so that he could continue with his volunteer work. Have you met such Cristians in our days who willingly use their time and money to do volunteer work by spreading the word of God??

Most of the people "spreading the word of God" are actually having a damn good holiday, paid for by members of their home church. There are hundreds of them here in Greece! As for the Pope, the catholic church is rich enough to pick up all the expenses but they don't believe in such kinds of charity!

Yes, most of those who claim to represent Jesus Christ are very far from his teachings. He never got paid for teaching the word of God or doing good to others, actually he gave the following principle when he said to his diciples: "freely have you received, freely give." Matthew 10:8 (Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition)

Yes. The Pope. No Church is without a leader. Our leaders go back to Peter who was the first Pope. the word Pope means. papa/father.

That is correct unless the father is a guest! Blessings. It was to Peter that Jesus gave the keys to the Kingdom of heaven. Many blessings and may you grow intolerance and love to all religions. Don't you think that God has a plan for us all? we all belong to Him.

Hi, Lakota I have never had much opportunity to talk to Mormons, but maybe someone else knows more about them. I cannot agree with the things I know about what they teach but I can say the same that Paul said about the Israelites of his time: "1 Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. 2 For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge."

I do not think the people should have to pay the cost of the visit. The Catholic church is among the richest entities in the world, holding lands and other treasures beyond most peoples' imagination. It can well afford travel expenses for the Pope. My own country has paid for visits from him, as well, while his poor admirers lined the streets, burdened by poverty because the Church forbids birth control. Most well-known people you hear preaching, as another has said, are having a great time and living high on the money of their congregation. But there are thousands if not millions of good hearted people spreading the word through their deeds as well as their witnessing. We have a charity here, the Salvation Army, that ministers to the poor and their records show that more than 90% of donations to directly to good works. You can see their people, all volunteers, out on the streets, in homeless shelters, at the shopping malls begging for money for the poor. There are many volunteers in many churches, including the Catholic church, who give of themselves to works inspired by God's goodness in countries all over the world. Yes, there are many, many people who volunteer in the service of God in order to help others. The Pope's visit is a poor representation of God's intentions that we help one another and share our excess resources. He said that where one or more are gathered in His name, there He is. He does not demand huge cathedrals and gold-plated collections plates. I think He wants kindness and love among us and that we fight evil, not a display of grandeur.

I think lots of people help others without asking for anything in return. That is the way we are created - we feel happiness when we give. Those who are greedy cannot feel that kind of happiness. Many have volunteered to help after earquakes and other disasters and also felt that kind of happiness. When I was a kid, we had some volunteer workers, ordinary people, who studied the Bible with us in our home, and they did it without any payment and used many hours to help us understand the Bible. It was a great time for my grandma, my mother and me. They were Jehovah´s witnesses. The things I learned from the Bible as a child give my life a meaning and the older I get, the more I understand the wisdom in the word of God and am still learning more and more every day.

Hi friend, I have met such people and although I´m not a believwr I have profound respect for them. I feel that if there were more people like them, the world would be a lot better. I don´t understand how people can conciliate the riches of the church with the poverty and humbleness of Christ and his apostles. Christ himself spoke against riches.

You are right marguicha, he was a good example of a person who followed what he taught. And he was aware of that lots of them who claimed to be his followers were far from true followers. "21 “Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. 22 On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ 23 But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’" So calling oneself a Christian and being a Christiand is a completely different thing.
